I think that was the game they showed at the Pub -- that was fun!

If we played Memphis, and St. John's played Nova in the semis, would the same results have occurred?

I actually cheered for Nova during this game when I was a kid as I always cheered against favorites. I liked the beginning though as they showed why G'town was a huge apparel selling team and that we had the ultimate in intimidation going. I couldn't help to think that Ewing would have been an NBA pick if this was today though.

What I couldn't get over was how big Ewing looked on the court back then. His legs looked like they were seven feet tall. He was like a Giant, and he jumped so high to block shots.

Now you've done it, RDF! I'd already decided I couldn't bear the pain of watching this special, despite my assumption that HBO would do its usual excellent job of producing a sports special. Your description convinces me I missed out last night and owe it to myself to watch the program ASAP. Fortunately I'll get about 20 different opportunities over the next month, as HBO rebroadcasts the show. Reading what you and others have written brings all the memories back. I was living in DC when Patrick arrived and spent EVERY opportunity I could at the Cap Centre enthusiastically rooting for da Hoyas. Then, when I moved to north Jersey, I kept my season tickets and traveled back for as many games as my schedule would allow, but also went to Hoya away games at MSG (the Sweater game!!), the Meadowlands and the Spectrum, among others. Man, did I have fun watching and rooting for that team!!! We lost some heartbreakers in NCAA championship games, but I'm still proud to say we were RIGHT THERE in all of 'em. If only wish we can come close to that level of accomplishment again. Go Hoyas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you were at the Garden for "Sweater Game" you saw one of the biggest moments in Big East and CBB History and I am just envious of anyone who was able to see the Hoyas in person during Patrick's time at GU. I got to stay up late to watch that one and had been waiting for that game in antcipation after SJU upset us at the Cap Centre. First of 3 straight butt kickings handed out and Ewing was UNREAL!! Way, I'd forgotten just how ferocious and athletic Patrick was and whenver I see Classic Games or footage like last night, it just amazes me at how great he was. BTW, it was a CRIME he didn't win POY in '84 and '85. Another fond memory--Patrick squaring up to take on Pearl Washington and Cuse---and Michael Graham destroying everyone in his way, he was UNREAL. Just an intimidating force and with Patrick, they were unstoppable.

I managed to see three home games in 1984 and we lost two of them! One I remember was against St. Johns and Chris Mullen really stuck it to us. Don't remember who we played in the other game.
Also in 84 I had been sent away on a business trip and had to watch the championship game from my room, by myself. Oh, how I missed not being able to jump up and down with friends or family when we won that thing. Reggie Williams was high that night with, I think, 19 points, even though he was a freshman.
To hell with the 85 game.

I saw it last night...it was pretty good...I was shocked...
I'm so use to people 'Demonizing' Georgetown that I was really apprehensive about the point of view from which the story would be told.
I knew that MY family followed Georgetown because they had an African American coach but I really had no idea how much influence the Hoyas had on the culture in a lot of the urban areas across the country. To hear Spike Lee and DMC say those things about the Hoyas put a HUGE smile on my face.
You know if there were so many Black folks to like them because the coach and players were African American, then there were definitely a WHOLE LOTTA folks that HATED them for the same reason.
I absolutely LOVED the statement by Big John, “If you wanted to fight, we were willing to accommodate you.”
That was a paraphrase, of course…
A lot of the negative publicity also came from the fact that G'town gear was popular amongst gangs. A lot of gangs (Crips) wore G'town apparel, and they still wear it now. Thats why when you heard them say, when you wore G'town gear, that meant you were tough, and you were down for whatever.

As for playing St John's in the title game I feel that if the Hoyas had lost to the Redmen it would have been more acceptable. St John's was a power as well and Chris Mullin was one of the best players ever. They were worthy. I think their coach was likable too. Can't say the same about Villanova. Of course I wasn't following college hoops back in those days so what do I know

I'm convinced. I'll watch it and relive the pain of that night. I hope that all the covergae of GU hoops makes up for the sad ending.

Yeah, the GU part is great, it made you wish the whole show focused on GU during that Era. The Villanova part was corny (of course I'm biased ). They talk about McLean being high on cocaine too and the controversy about him being on cocaine.

Its still a troubling time in this area, D.C. Not nearly as bad as it was in the 80s though. Why else do you think all the white folks are moving back in the city? ;D

The weakness of the documentary is that its like two separate films. 1st half on Gtown, second on Nova. And to be frank the Gtown part was more interesting. Yeah, I'm biased too. But I think I am able to be objective enough to give a fair assessment.

Of course I wasn't following college hoops back in those days so what do I know MCIGuy, You may not have been following hoops at the time, but your conjecture is right. I think SJU was rated #1 earlier in the season, or at least were top 5 with GU. That was the bigger game for the HOYAS. One could almost say GU suffered a let down vs. Nova after the bigger victory over SJU. But, that wasn't really the case. 'Nova just had a once in a lifetime game. GU played great Defense, and still 'Nova would throw up a shot and somehow hit it. They only missed one shot the entire second half. Their shooting percentage was unbelievable... yet they still won by only a single basket. If we played them 9 more times, 'Nova would not have won one -- although our two meetings with them earlier in the season were close games. GU was incredible in those days. The #1 program in the USA -- no question. JT had an opportunity to build a dynasty like John Wooden's UCLA teams. All the top kids wanted to play for Georgetown. But somehow, JT lost focus and motivation, didn't want to put the effort into recruiting, and let the whole thing slide. JT3 has the opportunity to get GU back to the top -- though it is highly unlikely GU will ever return to the utter dominance we had at that time.

But I think I am able to be objective enough to give a fair assessment. I haven't seen it yet, but GU was a major and fascinating story at the time. 'Nova was a flash in the pan, one time, lucky game winner. Not surprising the GU part would be more interesting.
