"In four Shell games so far, Wilson is averaging 31.5 points"
Geez, is he playing midgets?
"Before the season opened, US player agent Ben Penchak sent a tape of Georgetown star Mike Sweetney in action during a game where Wilson also played.
Austria was unhappy with Shell’s original import Eric Chenowith and checked out possible replacements.
'Pinanonood namin si Sweetney but we found out naglalaro na siya sa NBA,' recounted Austria. 'Wesley was on the same tape and we were impressed.'"
What, were they thinking they could get Sweetney?

LOL!! 31 points a game!? He may be playing against midgets. Wesley was solid at GU, but he wasn't Shaquille O'Neal.

He was better than Shaquille O'Neal, but that was when he was ineligible and playing in intramural games.
After his taunt of one of our guys following a blocked shot I told him to try passing a class so that he could get his ass kicked by Rutgers with the rest of the team.
I'm kind of mean when I'm playing high stakes intramural basketball playoffs.
we lost.

This article is hilarious. It sounds like there is one foreign player per team. I love how the article switches between English and Tagalog (?). Great, great stuff. Fantastic find.

"Meanwhile, Sta. Lucia has tapped 6-foot-7 Ryan Fletcher to reinforce the team as it resumes its campaign in the PBA Fiesta Conference against Red Bull on Friday.
Fletcher, a teammate of NBA star Kenyon Martin in the Uconn champion team in the US NCAA, suited for Ginebra in 2000 and 2001 Reinforced Conference and is expected to boost the Realtors’ chances after they went 1-3 (win-loss) with Raheim Brown as their import. _______________________________ Kenyon Martin played for Uconn?
Hope the rest of the article is reliable

Good job Wes! The man is very, very big. But I'll admit that I didn't think he could average 30 a game on my JV high school team! Wes definitely has the talent to make a nice living for himself playing ball overseas, and maybe eventually in the US.

Wes had all the potential he just suffered from the DJ disease-- a perceived lack of intensity and heart. From the interviews, it seems like he's bringing it back together. I guess the family tragedies that plagued the end of his career at GU really were the reason behind his decline. I don't think he ever really got over the death of his grandfather?/grandmother? (I can't remember). He just never played the same after that. But It seems his fighting spirit out of him. I'm glad to see that some time in Asia has him playing up to his potential again. I hope to see him return to the US in the near future and get on a roster.

Sorry to rehash this thread, but I was actually in the Philippines last week, and I caught a WW game on TV -- he was a beast, like you thought he might be watching his one of every 5 or so good games for the Hoyas. I think he has a legitimate shot at the NBA if he keeps that kind of intensity up, because his scoring did not just come from layups over smaller guys, but from turnaround jumpers, odd angle shots using the glass, and putbacks with 3 guys hanging on him. Wish I could have seen a game of his in person!

Saxa, where were you in the PI? Manila? That is where my wife is from, although I have never been to the PI, and my wife hasn't been back since 1966. Good to hear about WW.

How big were the guys he was playing against?
Dominating anywhere would be great for Wes. He needs to believe he can be dominate before he actually does it. He never developed that confidence at GU, but I really do think there's an NBA player in there.

They weren't very big -- mostly PI players with each team getting an "import" or two, but I've always thought it was WW's head that needed the most help, not his body or skills, so his ability to dominate anywhere, as you say, might be the most important thing. And it wasn't just "putback" stuff -- he genuinely looked like a skilled center.

I always believed -- and still do -- that WW had (has) tremendous talent, and that if JT-Pops had been his coach, things would have been quite different.

Interesting blog article about Phillipine pro hoops. www.nba.com/blog/archive_2003/blog12.htmlWas aware that Zags' Richie Frahm played in PBA (with the Talk'n'Text team, no less) before finally connecting with the NBA last year. But there have been more migrations from PBA to U.S. pro rosters. -------------------------------- NBA cagers in Philippine league Tracking NBA players as imports in the Philippines It's not often that a player jumps directly from the NBA to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in the same season. But Torraye Braggs of Xavier (Ohio) did the improbable. After playing 11 games for Houston and four for Washington this year, Braggs flew to Manila to replace George Reese (Ohio State) in the Barangay Ginebra lineup a few weeks ago. He's the third import to play for Ginebra since the PBA campaign started last February. Rosell Ellis (McNeese State) was the first and Reese, the second. In the PBA, each team is allowed to recruit a single import who can be no taller than 6-8. The league's medical staff measures each import to make sure. An import's job isn't easy. He takes the heat when his team is on the skids-never mind how poorly his teammates are playing. Contracts are usually guaranteed but teams are willing to pay off than stick with an import who's not delivering. What makes the PBA an attractive destination for "imports" is its reputation of making good on contracts. There has never been a case of an import not getting paid since the PBA started in 1975. Besides, the Philippines is a tropical paradise. Imports are treated like movie stars by basketball-crazy Filipino fans. They're celebrities away from home. The pay isn't bad. The accommodations are excellent. The people are friendly, hospitable and English-speaking. The food is fantastic. The malls are a shopper's dream. The beaches are fabulous. And most importantly, the competition is top-class. Former PBA imports now playing in the NBA are Portland's Desmond Ferguson, Detroit's Tremaine Fowlkes and Seattle's Ansu Sesay and Richie Frahm. Cut during the season were Chicago's Rick Brunson and Golden State's Sean Lampley.
