I can't listen to Mike Tirico without thinking about the sexual harassment allegations against him in that ESPN book. What were the exact details of that again?
SFHoya's analysis, by the way, is the dumbest things I've ever heard. Should 51% of play-by-play people be women? You can't ignore the likelihood based on the background of athletes participating in major revenue pro and college sports that black and white men are much more likely than others to want to be play-by-play announcers. To suggest that a level of 12% is all that's required just demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the universe.
We should stick to basketball though, because when some people wander away from that around here, they reveal a little too much.

When I read that 12% statement, I had to read it again to see if my eyes were failing me.

We should stick to basketball though, because when some people wander away from that around here, they reveal a little too much. I don't think anything is requried. Furthermore, I'm not particularly good at sports, but I like them. Most PBP announcers are people just like that -- not athletes but love sports. I never said anything about a female/male split and have no idea why that is in your argument. "To suggest that a level of 12% is all that's required just demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the universe. We should stick to basketball though, because when some people wander away from that around here, they reveal a little too much." That's a quality quote. But it says more about your character than mine.

There aren't blacks who love sports but aren't particularly good at them?

There aren't blacks who love sports but aren't particularly good at them? Of course there are. I just don't know why African-Americans would have a higher percent of their population that love sports than caucasians. I suppose you could make an argument, but I'd love to see some kind of proof. This isn't like color announcing, or coaching, where playing at a professional level (or at least college) is considered a major plus for the job. In those situations, you'd expect the demographics of those jobs to be more similar to that of athletes. But here you have a small sample (what, 600 jobs in the US, about thirty on national television?), and a job that really has no relationship to having played a game at the level of your announcing. So I see no reason why the demographics of announcing should mirror the demographics of the players. Should there probably be more black pbp men? Sure, since I can name only one or two. But would we expect in a discrimination free environment for 80% of basketball pbp announcers to be black, like the athletes in college bball? I'm not sure why we would.

Did you read my post? The argument is all there. Yeah, I read it. Your argument holds no weight.

Yeah, I read it. Your argument holds no weight. Thanks for that well-thought and logical counterpoint. We all appreciate it, I'm sure.
