[ The absence of a cogent long-term US strategy for Syria is a continuing disgrace and is almost old enough for kindergarten.

[ The absence of a cogent long-term US strategy for Syria is a continuing disgrace and is almost old enough for kindergarten. Agreed. That's why I believe that asking for a new AUMF would force more reasoned discussion on policy alternatives in Syria and the Middle East writ large. Right now, the US is floundering. Acting Ass't Secretary of State for the NEA, David Satterfield mentioned in the article was the Director-General of the peacekeeping force when I was its lawyer. He is very capable (Arabic speaker, former Ambassador to Lebanon among other things) but I am uncertain whether he has any substantive input given the apparent broken policy process of the current Administration. See e.g., Amb. Nikki Haley and Russian sanctions.
