Nice article about a segment of athletes that go from fan favorites to nearly forgotten by all but those fans in a hurry. Thanks for sharing, glide.
Henry really looks like he's grown into his frame. I wish he rocked that 'do while in school. I'm happy to read that he's doing well and getting travel miles under his belt. Not the life he had hoped for in a perfect world but, in many ways probably, far more interesting.
Too bad there isn't a Players' Tribune type site for guys like Henry. I recall Jason Clark starting his own site years back but I think he abandoned it pretty quickly.

His jump from junior to senior seasons at Georgetown was one of the more remarkable ones i’ve seen in the blue and gray. Charles Smith of course took big leaps. Shernard Long’s was awesome as well.

Simms teammates saw him as always joking around and the team clown, but his senior year it sunk in that he needed to work and really get it done to play anywhere beyond Georgetown. Simms got focus and started putting what it takes to get it done. It was great to see. I've long wondered what what his upside would have been if he took things seriously from the beginning.

Charles Smith’s leap forward began late sophomore year. I recall he played quite well in the 1987 tournament. By 1988 he was a legitimate scoring threat andbanked in the game winner against LSU in the tournament first round. By 1989 he was a star.

I don’t think Smith called that bank shot to beat LSU. 😉

Chosen by his college coach in the worst Olympic performance ever by a USA men’s basketball team that led to the advent of NBA players competing in the Olympics. But yes, technically an Olympian.

All true but that Olymoic loss was not his fault. Check out the stinker that Manning mailed in against the Russians... Also if memory serves, Hawkins missed the USSR game with an injury. The team was poorly constructed but Big John’s marquee players came up way small.

I'm not sure which one of Big John's losses is more overblown; the one where we lost by two to a conference rival we beat by two in OT the same season or the 7-1 Olympic team that lost to a Soviet team with two future Hall of Famers. Nobody gets destroyed for his losses like JT. Half the media counts Princeton as a loss.

A great deal of that has its origin in the fact that he did not kiss the media’s collective ass, thus making him a favorite and easy target.

What if JT3 had played him at his natural center spot during his 1st two years at Gtown I've always believed that would have made the biggest difference in his college career..

Going on how players interacted with him and talked about him I don't think that would have made much of a difference. He didn't seem to take much seriously until his senior year. They were really surprised by the level of play he he showed and the work he put in. Much if it was out in the open in Twitter. I was really happy that he got it going his last year, for his sake.
