I know it's just a highlight video, but Cimino seems to have a nice touch from all three levels and appears to be a better athlete than some reports suggested. Does anyone know if we are actively recruiting him? His skillset is very much needed at the 4/5; it's just too easy for opposing defenses to ignore Moses/Hopkins/Lubick from outside 5 feet. Which in turn enables opponents to double DSR and Starks. The staff isn't on him Talos.. He'd be a good fit with the 2014 class given his skill set & length... JT3 & Broadus saw him play well in a game against Brewster Academy in a December tourney.. Thanks....that's too bad. It seems they are looking more at De La Rosa?

We have a fantastic 2014 class, but we need to follow up immediately with a great 2015 class. Right now, it's obvious that we're running with maybe two guys that are going to contribute past this year. Hayes, Domingo, Hopkins, eh. It's DSR and maybe Cameron.
The 2014 class is a great opening, but that's still only six players. Seven, once Derrickson is here. We simply need more players and more big guys. Or we're going to have more years like this one.

We need bigs. Guys that can play with their back to the basket, rebound and protect the rim. Also, a few more guards that can handle the rock and defend.

Agree 100%, SF. As it stands now (and barring injury or eligibility issues), I fully expect us to be a tourney team next year and 2015-2016 with the talent coming in. But we still wouldn't have the talent to CONTEND. To do that, we need 2 solid bigs who can guard, pass, and at least score if we get them the ball in good position on the block.
My preferred way to do it would be to sign one 2015 stud (like Diamond Stone or Dickerson if he's indeed that legit) and get a high-level transfer after this season that would be able to practice next year and play in 2015-2016. I just don't think there are any legit impact big men left in 2014, although I'd love trey mourning to surprise me and become a contributor earlier than anticipated.

I actually don't think they need an impact big. They need a big like other teams have - defend, rebound, make a layup. I'm not sure why our teams have struggled recently to get players that can be solid and have a surprising game once in a while with size, but we don't seem to.
I actually think Moses might play that role sort of halfway next year with all the talent around him. An athletic Moses would be perfect -- it's too bad about his injury.

I agree with SF. An impact big would certainly be nice, but we don't NEED one. We just desperately need at least a serviceable big in the 2015 class. Moses and Hop are gone after next year and we don't have any bigs in the 14 class. That leaves us with Hayes and......yea. So we desperately need a big guy that can at least protect the rim a little bit, rebound, and maybe gets some putbacks on offense. If he could pass a bit too, that would be helpful.
In watching the Xavier game the other night, I couldn't help but think that guy Stainbrook would be a good fit on our team. There has to be plenty of those guys out there.

The thing I've taken away from the past few years is you need to load up at every position to the extent possible and then rinse and repeat the following recruiting season. You never know which recruits will pan out and which wont. You never know what the composition of the roster will be in the years ahead and what the strong and weak points of the lineup will be. I know this sounds obvious, but the staff needs to try to overflow talent at every position and do it again the following year and the year after that....etc. we've had too many uneven classes and that have left us with holes even when we've had talent (freeman, wright and monroe) and (Otto). If that first group had a strong front court complement to Monroe and if last year's team had some depth and a center, you're looking at a much more complete team. Now, I realize that player development and transfers play a role (Sims and Macklin) and recruiting misses (Noel) can change the best laid plans. However, I also got the feeling that there was some sense of complacency in the past. Assistant coaches were satisfied with one good class and didn't follow-up. They also didn't consider the possibility that some guys would leave for one reason or another. I don't get that feeling now, but you can't overstate how important it is for the staff to not settle for a mediocre center and to land a top guy while staying on a fall back guy who is also above average so that we're not left with late period dregs. '15 is off to a great start with derrickson but if we cant get either Mann or Trier and then a quality big, we'll be falling behind other programs that reload every year.

Bring in everyone you can with the best talent with some regard to need but in general the more talent you have on the roster the more margin for error you have if one doesn't pan out for whatever reason. I think gone are the days of us slow playing kids for the blue chippers who spurn us at the last second and then we're left scrambling. I feel much better about our staff going forward thus far

The program hasn't landed a decent HS big since Adams & Hopkins, I would definitely settle for mediocre at this point. With drive and proper coaching mediocre could turn out like Gardner from Marquette or Stainbrook from Xavier or Teague from Seton Hall who's averaging 10 pts & 9 boards a game.. All these dudes are just solid college players who help to make their teams better. I don't think the staff can afford to wait until 2015 to land a big.. I'm not a big fan of Dela Rosa's but I'd take him over nothing in 2014.. I like the 4/5 types much better for the front-court in JT3's system..

We definitely need to add a big to our 2014 class. I don't know who's out there, but we'd better be beating the bushes to locate a spring signee as we did with Otto Porter, Greg W, Chris Wright - only we need a big guy. There's got to be a kid out there who wants to come to Big Man U.
While we are at it, we also need to add another guard.

So for those who follow recruiting more closely than I do, what do you think should be our strategy from here on out with the scholarships we have open right now - 2 for 14 and 4 for 15. What should be the plan of attack? Do we bring back Moses and Bowen, which still allows us to operate with 4 open scholarships for 15? Do we keep trying to add to the 14 class and take up 2 of those open schollys for 15? Is there anyone left in the 14 class that is going to add more value next year than Bowen and Moses?
Based on the news updates, it seems like the staff is working the 15 class pretty hard these days, which is great. Not much going on with 14 guys (except maybe Trier who could possibly reclass based on the scuttlebutt over in that thread). How do you guys think we should allocate those scholarships?

A Modest Proposal - so modest that it does not deserve a thread of its own but shall be buried here instead.
Gut the program now and use the strong base of the 2014 class to build a future. I do not mean the coach, with whom I have frustrations but no full blown complaints, but on the player side, let's scrap everything we can and go forward with whomever we can get our hands on for 14 and on. Here is what the proposal looks like:
Markel, Caprio & Lubick - graduate, eligibility done, thank you for playing, you will hear from Alumni Solicitations, eh, I mean Relations soon.
Ayegba & Bowen - Seniors who have a year of eligibility left. Find schools where they will be able to play immediately as grad students.
Trawick & Hopkins - rising seniors, no way to purge, so we keep them for the Sr. years.
Smith - what is he anyway, a junior? Keep the academic door closed, he will find his own way - maybe Vaqueros de Bayamon is looking for a center.
DSR - you are the guy we keep, congratulations.
Domingo, Hayes - if not done already, make it clear to them that their futures are brighter elsewhere, i.e. force transfers if they aren't already planned.
Cameron - in truth even a radical restructuring could probably benefit from keeping him, but for fun, let's milk this idea and show him the door as well.
Campbell, Peak, White and Copeland - call all your player friends, cause we have spots open.
Leaving us with Hopkins, Trawick, DSR and the 14ers Campbell, Copeland, Peak and White.
The staff hits the trail immediately with SIX open spots on the team and playing time galore for unsigned bigs in the 2014 class. Add Trey Mourning as a walk-on.
I mean, to hear people around here talk, few on the team are worth keeping anyway, right? Go Big
Why not?

First things first, Hoyatalk needs a purge.
LIC- it's been nice having you, but maybe you'd have more fun playing minesweeper MCI-we love you, but your posts take an hour to read. Maybe you can use the rest of your eligibility over on the Bleacher Report comment section. SFHoya- Good analysis... maybe we'll keep you around for another season, but Yaboy is ready to take your spot Seaweed - I can't tell how serious you are, but your post made my head hurt

I'm not sure that's really necessary. Stripping away the stuff that happens anyway, you have:
Tell Josh, Moses and Aaron they aren't welcome next year. Push Hayes and Domingo out the door.
Aside from any ethical concerns, the first point is only relevant for 2014 from a personnel standpoint. Right now, we have no scholarships available for 2014, but FOUR more (at minimum) available for 2015 (Josh, Moses, Aaron, Hop, Trawick is five - Derrickson has taken one). There's no 2015 crunch. There's no concern for 2015 recruits re: playing time you're fixing with this, because no one is looking at Hayes or Domingo and thinking "I can't beat that guy out."
How many recruits do you think are really worth it in 2014? At most, I expect one. And we're likely to get that scholarship organically -- whether a transfer, academic casualty or Moses or Aaron deciding to get on with the next stage of their lives.
There's only one good reason for a house-cleaning: if the players in question are chemistry poison; if they don't won't; if they party too much; if they set a bad example. Otherwise, no.
There is very good reason to bring in a 2014 big even if they aren't ready to contribute in 2014 (simply so that it doesn't take three years to get a contributing upper class big). But unless two ready-to-play-now 2014 bigs come up... can you really see a reason to take two projects?
So the why not?
There's no real benefit to going big, and players like Aaron, Moses and possibly Josh could contribute next year. And we really have no reason to write off Domingo and Hayes yet if the staff thinks they can develop. Because nine guys across 2014 and 2015 is fine. And 2016 can be planned to be a big class as well -- Domingo, Hayes, DSR and very possibly a Copeland or Peak (or even White) turning pro.
