If we're going to talk about Otto Porter, we need to acknowledge that Syracuse played much better defense against him than they did in the previous two games. Porter didn't get many open looks, and as a result, he didn't score a whole lot of points. The advantage we have is that other teams won't play a zone like Syracuse, and most of the NCAA teams will have no experience playing against him.
I can understand getting tired in a single game, since giving your all for 40 minutes has to be exhausting, but if there's a week off between games, it really shouldn't matter. As Dan said, Kemba Walker played plenty of games a few years ago, and it did not slow him down.

Playing four of the top 25 defenses in a row also has something to do with it. Otto's fine, and when he's not going through the meat grinder in the Big East he'll be more than fine.

Playing nearly 40 minutes a game didn't seem to slow Kemba Walker down through the BET and NCAA tourney. Are you comparing our system to UConn's? UConn's offensive and defensive styles do not rely on constant movement from the players as ours. Otto plays ours like it should be played and doesn't cut corners. Against Syracuse, we passed the ball around for close to 25 seconds, each play. All the while Otto was moving. On defense, we made them work for their shot. Again, the week off will benefit our players.

Walker was constant motion in those games. I don't buy the Otto wearing down line of thinking.

Hi Dan:
Let me make this argument from another angle. I don't know if Kemba Walker was given any bench time in the games leading up to the Big East Tournament, or during the tournament games, but lets assume that he never left the floor. All that proves is that he was able to do that and be effective. However, that just proves that Kemba Walker could do that. On the other hand, Louisville rests Siva, Smith, Tsieng (sp?). Syracuse rested Southerland, MCW etc against us. Zeller and Oladipo are rested. Why do these coaches do that??? Otto hasn't had a minute of bench time since he had foul trouble in the Cincinnati game before the tournament. Otto played 45 minutes against Syracuse. I just find it hard to believe that playing that many minutes didn't affect him. I just can't. He has been missing shots that he normally makes.
Hopefully, I am wrong and he performs like he did earlier in the year and takes us to the final four and beyond.

You are mistaken. He missed some shots. It happens. This did not deserve a new thread.

Kemba was a senior. Which means that he had 2 extra years of playing 30+ mins a game at the college level. This is Otto's 1st yr being the man. He has handled it well but you are being naive if you don't realize that he is tiring a little. His shot isn't off much but that's how you can tell it's fatigue and not a slump. If his shot was all over the place that would seem more mental. Like it has already been said, Otto and the gang have a week to rest. Losing to Cuse and having that extra day of rest may have been a blessing.

The reason John Thompson III doesn't rest Porter is because we aren't a very good basketball team when he is on the bench. We play to win, therefore Otto plays 40 minutes. If there is ever a time to do this, it's now. You don't rest your superstar at the most important point in the year.

Walker was a junior in the year I cited.

in his junior year, kemba averaged 37.6 minutes a game, 23.5 pts/gm on 42.8% fg with 33% from 3. however, he was 81.9% from the free throw line, and we know how the refs liked to send him there.

There are plenty of stoppages in play. He usually does come out for a minute or two. If there is a dead ball with say 8:40 left in the first half, JTIII might sub for him knowing that the under 8 timeout is coming up so he can rest two minutes and only miss a couple of possessions. The coach can tell if he needs a rest.

Walker was a junior in the year I cited. Otto should be fresher than Kemba was. He has younger legs. ;D I agree with you I think there may be some wear-down during a game - the recent games specifically, with teams double- and triple-teaming him. But that's the reason why he had a subpar game against Cuse -- they were focusing on him and making it very difficult to get open looks. It wasn't because he was wearing down from all those minutes during the year.

His shots were a great deal more contested in this last 'Cuse game than in the first one. Teams are smart to swarm around him, and being the smart player that he is, he will punish them for that in the Tourney with his great passing.

I think it's much more likely that Otto is feeling the pressure, both in the media and from opposing defenses, than it is that he's tired. Especially in a one and out situation, teams are going to be keying on the guy they've heard about on ESPN. Let's see who steps up. All hands on deck. Play like there is no tomorrow because, as far as the season goes, there isn't. I wanna see every possible college game with Otto in it. The matchups are all set. The difference between a really good year and a special one is in the hands of our guys. Go get it Hoyas!

There should be little resistance getting to the sweet 16. Then we probably have a case of deja vu with UF waiting with the elite 8 on the line. I don't like the possible matchup with Kansas but I'll worry about that when we get there...........

Don't know and it doesn't matter, between the the double teaming and triple teaming Otto Porter is about to see in the NCAA, his team mates will have to step up...teams are not going to let him beat them by himself (i.e., Syracuse Rd. 1)
