Tariq Owens (Baltimore/ St. Vincent Palotti) 2014, PF/SF, 6-foot-9, 185 pounds
Per a tweet from Chase Brooks @dmvbball Tariq was at the game today.
He's a 3star according to scout but is not ranked by ESPN or Rivals..
Has anyone seen him play or know of him?
Here's a write-up from the Elite 75 showcase this past September..
Owens is a slender combo forward with tons of upside. He showed a few skills that could make him an elite prospect in the near future. He was relatively comfortable handling the ball in space. His shot was fairly accurate and he had range to 17 feet. His length and athletic ability were very hard to stop in transition. Owens finished pretty well in the paint and showed the ability to use both hands inside. He needs to get a lot stronger and a little tougher, but Owens is definitely one to watch in the future.

I have been told he's a little soft at this point, so needs to play tougher. I like skilled guys, but I'd also like a few more JYD's.

I mentioned him in the Josh Hart thread. Saw him play earlier in the year. Nice touch from the line for a big guy, but no post game and not tough enough yet. Pretty darn good defensively though.

Sounds like a write up that may have been given to Whittington in high school.

I think one of the knocks against GW in h.s. was his defense, but not sure.

Can we get a few 6'9 tough cats with some skills and less projects? Ijs That's what the staff is trying to do by going hard for Copeland(who was @ NC State'e game yesterday) & Looney. I like the fact that if Owens is a back-up plan for '14 at least he has some face-up and ball handling skills to work with. Hitting the weight room and solid coaching may help with the toughness.

He's a good paint defender and shot blocker. He's not a wing defender at this point.

I understand and love Kevon and Isaac; guess I'm used to seeing us involved with high majors and having to settle for leftovers. A lot of ships for '14, so the staff can afford to take an early pop. I know if Looney popped they would. Need another 5 too; can't count on Hayes and Bolden's development or if they'll even be here.

Id, won't we go to KS with the same team we have now? Just plus Cameron and minus someone?

Yes, I was just wanting to go with a strong 8 or maybe 9 into KU territory. The good thing is Withey, the shooter from St.Louis and Reliford will all be gone, so they'll definitely have more ?s than us; they are Kansas though. When is the last time we played them in a non-tourney setting?

Played in 1987 (sweet 16?) before Maui, but I can't remember anything else. It would be nice to be able to go deep with aggressive D and try to play at our pace there.

Ahh '87, Reggie and the miracles. I remember Bama and Jim Farmer and of course Providence. I believe we'd have beaten Cuse in the FF. Not sure about IU, Cuse had the better team Imo.

When is the last time we played them in a non-tourney setting? The "shooter from St. Louis" is Ben McLemore, who looks like he'll be a lotto pick after this season, his sophomore year (interesting that Mizzou let 3 lotto picks in that class - Bradley Beal, Ben McLemore and Otto Porter - get out of state). Additionally, Elijah Johnson will be gone - starting PG that is graduating. That said, Self is a big-time recruiter and KU will re-load.

In the 1987 tournament and in last year's Maui invitational.
