DFW excellent points in your Blog as usual, I am in full agreement with your focus on making this an opportunity for GU football to shine on a national stage and in my opinion more importantly in front of all of the Ivy and Patriot schools that think of GU FB as a second class citizen due to the lack of money and support that we have been awarded from the school and athletic department (ie facilities, scholarships, etc).
1. Regional Alumni. There are over 4,000 undergraduate alumni in the Garden State….Georgetown Clubs of Northern and Southern New Jersey, I'm talking to you.
Question: Is the GridIron Club going to take the lead and make them aware of this game and work / push to make this something special – perhaps something like a big tailgate that is co-sponsored by the GridIron Club and the local NY / NJ / PA alumni clubs?
2. Band & Cheerleaders. …the chance to show off Georgetown on national TV might be the ticket to get 25 or 30 of these folks on a bus outside McDonough at 2:00 Friday afternoon, along with cheerleaders and the costumed Jack The Bulldog to show the colors for TV and rally the fans making the trip… Transportation to and from the game costs money. Transportation to and from the game requires planning. The Gridiron Club should open up the discussion this summer with these groups and get some commitments and, where needed, a few donations, to get this moving.
Question: Is the New Director of FB Ops, Football Coaching Staff and Athletic Department also going to help make this something special? In my opinion, they all need to be heavily involved and they should all be very public in terms of announcing what they are all doing to make this a success.
3. Students. While we're at it with the bad and cheerleaders, is Hoya Blue ready for its curtain call? …. But with only a three hour road trip, what better way to get students (particularly freshmen) interested in Georgetown sports than a bus trip such as this? ….
Question: Is the GridIron Club, the New Director of FB Ops, the Football Coaching Staff and the Athletic Department going to push on HoyaBlue to do their part to make this something special? Again, in my opinion they all need to be heavily involved and they should all be very public in terms of announcing what they are all doing to make this a success.
4. National Alumni. … We need awareness by every Georgetown regional club in the US that they should host a game watching party for this one….
Question: Is the GridIron Club going to take the lead and make them aware of this game and work / push to make these events happen? It might also be a good oppty to ask each of these clubs to “pass the hat” at their particular event and send some money into the GridIron Club in support of the program. Maybe the GridIron Club can arrange to ship out some GU FB apparel / hats, etc to the clubs that agree to participate so that they can be given out as door gifts, or as part of a raffle or something. .
5. Basketball fans.
Question: DFW – Can you make the announcement of the game as prevalent on your BB site and Message Board as you have done for the FB site?

The band should absolutely play. DFW, let me know if I can help with that effort in any way.

If we really want this opportunity to go anywhere, it can't just be left up to the Gridiron Club, which in my experience is well-meaning but very limited in terms of its institutional capacity. The drive has to come from McDonough, both in terms of their own efforts (e.g. through Hoyas Unlimited, Sports Promotions, Information, etc.) and in engaging and pushing other GU affiliates (the alumni clubs and the Alumni Relations folks at Advancement, Hoya Blue, the Pep Band, etc.). Unfortunately, to quote DFW, "as a general rule basketball doesn't promote other GU sports," and McDonough as an institution generally takes its cue from basketball... Btw, DFW, thanks for mentioning the road trip to Penn in your post. That was certainly an experience for the ages. I very much enjoyed Kevin Kelly's facial expression as he tried to wrap his head around the idea that some group of students had actually taken it upon themselves to travel several hours of their own accord to a Georgetown football game. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of the people on the bus ride up were actually using it as a way to get to Philly for cheap (with a couple of early-morning beers thrown in for good measure) and were probably navigating some part of the SEPTA system by kickoff. The remaining contingent was in no shape to withstand the withering barrages of toast unleashed by the Quakers.

I'm missing something here...what trip to Penn? Upenn? For football? Fill me in....
Maybe the AD can encourage JTIII to get excited about a return to his alma mater if we want to leverage the hoops program in firing up support for this game. Would be incredible to have an organized tailgate to the point where we had 7-8 busses heading up friday full of just students. Let's be honest about this- this is only going to happen if the students think they will be able to partake in Friday evening activities while up there (beer.) I have no idea how the university can play a part in such an arrangement but I know if the school expects to have a formal event that strictly polices drinking by students...students will hit Thirds and the Tombs instead of long bus trip to NJ on a Friday night.
I'm sure the local alum/parent turnout will be solid for this one. Those of us who made the Lehigh game this year can attest that if the occasion is there Gtown can travel well in the NY-NJ-PA area anyway. I refuse to believe the 6K attendance number from that game. The gtown side alone had to be close to 2500. The away stands were by no means empty and the home stands were about 75% full.

We've never had that many busses going to anything except maybe the Final Four. We had 4 to Syracuse in 2008 and I believe 4 to Navy in 2005.

Well Cuse is VERY far and I imagine tickets were pretty scarce to boot. And Navy is a crap game for basketball.

Any of these good ideas around developing a supporting fan base for the Princeton game ever get any traction?

I believe McD is sponsoring a road trip for students. Not sure how many are going though.

according to Hoya Blue's Facebook page, JTIII paid for an extra bus for students out of his own pocket: "By popular demand, and through the generous contribution of JTIII himself, we now have a second bus going to Princeton! That means 50 more seats!" www.facebook.com/events/152413584899665/
