I think Emily had a tad bit of bad luck. She was sitting in the back of the pack running next to Abbey D'agostino. Abbey moved up about a lap before Emily did. When Emily moved up, Julia Lucas started her move. Emily never really had a chance to gather herself and just had to keep on running at full steam.

Emily usually runs in the middle of the pack next to the curb, trying to run the least distance, which is good tactics for the early parts of the races. So maybe the pace was a bit faster than she was used to and in an attempt to get in contention, she used too much energy getting up to the front. I will post an interview with her (as usually the audio quality is poor).
But we are all proud of the Hoyas, who ran at the trials. To get into the trials is a great achievement and to run well at them is even better.

Meanwhile, Liam is running the semis of the men's 1500m today in what appears to be the easier of the two heats, heat #1.

Another two Hoyas in the finals, this time in the 1500M:
Place Athlete Name Affiliation Time Qual Heat(Pl) 1 Morgan Uceny adidas 4:08.90 Q 1 (1) 2 Jenny Simpson New Balance 4:09.12 Q 1 (2) 3 Margaret Infeld N Y A C 4:09.38 Q 1 (3) 4 Anna Pierce Nike 4:09.51 Q 1 (4) 5 Nicole Schappert N Y A C 4:09.60 Q 1 (5) 6 Shannon Rowbury Nike 4:09.96 Q 2 (1) 7 Gabriele Anderson Brooks / Team USA Minnesota 4:10.08 Q 2 (2) 8 Treniere Moser Nike 4:10.10 q 1 (6) 9 Katherine Mackey Brooks 4:10.54 Q 2 (3) 10 Sara Vaughn Nike 4:10.57 Q 2 (4) 11 Sarah Bowman New Balance 4:10.65 Q 2 (5) 12 Brenda Martinez New Balance 4:10.73 q 1 (7) 13 Alice Schmidt Nike 4:10.94 2 (6) 14 Katie Flood Washington 4:11.38 1 (8) 15 Renee Tomlin Nike 4:11.39 1 (9) 16 Ashley Miller Nebraska 4:11.49 1 (10) 17 Amy Mortimer Saucony 4:12.04 2 (7) 18 Greta Feldman Princeton 4:12.29 1 (11) 19 Karly Hamric RIADHA 4:12.52 1 (12) 20 Kate Grace Oiselle / New Jersey New York 4:12.92 2 (8) 21 Phoebe Wright Nike 4:13.65 2 (9) 22 Heather Kampf Asics / Team USA Minnesota 4:14.03 2 (10) 23 Jordan Hasay Oregon 4:15.52 2 (11) 24 Melissa Salerno New Balance 4:16.33 2 (12)
Maggie Infeld qualified by finishing 3rd to the #1 ranked 1500m runner last year and the world champion - not bad. Treniere qualified on time. Renee had a good time, but just less than a second need to qualify.

Really solid race by Maggie. She got inside quickly and hugged the rail behind Uceny. Treniere got bumped early in the race and almost fell and then got back into the pack and ran right next to Renee and Maggie. Thankfully, Treniere still makes it to the finals.

Only three of the women 1500m finalists have the A standard of 4:06.0. Consequently, it is in the interest of the other nine runners to make a final a fast race.

Liam got himself in a very slow heat, everybody was there at the end and it turned into a mass sprint. Liam was 8th, less than a second behind the winner of the heat. Everybody in the 2nd heat was about seven seconds faster than the winner of the first heat.

impressive run by maggie to make the finals of the 1500-all he hoyas acquitted themselves well--I still think emily would have had a better shot at the 1500--she hasn,t run enough 5k's + I don't think she quite has enough stength yet to mix it up with the high elite distance women. Watching her at the NCAA's and trials i think she would have had a better shot at kicking off a fast 1500 than she had at the 5k.

Kirsten did not compete in the 5000m in the Canadian trials. Sheila Reid of Nova won, so maybe she goes with a B mark; doubt if any have an A standard.

Mass sprint is right. Liam looked like he was third as they were rounding for home. Of course, every runner in the heat was still in it. Just got outkicked.

A little more on the A and B standards. In the men's racewalk, which is taking place right now, one man, Trevor Barron, has the A standard, and a couple have the B standard. If somebody besides Trevor wins the race (not likely, IMO) and finishes with a B standard time, he goes, because since you can have one person going with the B standard, since that person won the trials race, that person with the win and the B standard trumps Barron even though he has the A standard. Very confusing.

The last event with Georgetown representing was the women's 1500m:
Place Athlete Name Affiliation Time 1 Morgan Uceny adidas 4:04.59 2 Shannon Rowbury Nike 4:05.11 3 Jenny Simpson New Balance 4:05.17 4 Gabriele Anderson Brooks / Team USA Minnesota 4:07.38 5 Anna Pierce Nike 4:07.78 6 Sarah Bowman New Balance 4:08.25 7 Margaret Infeld N Y A C 4:08.31 8 Alice Schmidt Nike 4:09.64 9 Katherine Mackey Brooks 4:11.46 10 Nicole Schappert N Y A C 4:13.51 11 Treniere Moser Nike 4:15.84 12 Brenda Martinez New Balance 4:17.41 13 Sara Vaughn Nike 4:30.89
Maggie acquited herself well as she finished 7th with what might have been a PR for her. I am not sure whether that is a Infeld family record as Emily ran 4:08.xx at last year's nationals. Treniere set some of the pace early on, so she probably paid for that at the end.
