Washington Post: "Georgetown issued a 12-page request-for-proposals recently seeking private-sector development partners who can evaluate the university’s existing campus and begin evaluating large blocks of land in the area, specifically Hill East, a 50-acre site next to RFK Stadium, Poplar Point, a 110-acre swath of parkland in Ward 8, and "two additional to-be-identified parcels," according to the document. Competing firms are encouraged to consider potential redevelopment of the school’s existing Medical Center zone, a signal that the hospital, operated by MedStar, could relocate in the future." www.washingtonpost.com/local/georgetown-university-is-looking-east-in-dc-to-expand/2012/07/19/gJQA74YtwW_story.html

O'Connell hits all the important points. Exciting times ahead for Georgetown.

Poplar Point would be a real game-changer for the entire city. I suppose it's too much to hope for a deal with DC United to have them build their desired 20,000 seat stadium there that could also be used by Georgetown for football, soccer, and lacrosse. Aside from freeing up some badly-needed open space in the center of campus, it would also be finished much quicker than the MSF :/

I didnt follow the Poplar Point drama that closely. Did they decide to build DCU stadium or scrap it? Was it the Mayor or the council that was holding up/held up the project?

Umm, It take Georgetown nearly 25 years and counting to build a boathouse, but a VELODROME has been approved to be built?

If this report is to be believed, the School of Continuing Studies will be abandoning its presence in Clarendon ca. 2014 in order to consolidate at the new Georgetown Downtown campus. My apologies for the clutter if this was previously stated in one of the many facilities discussions. Oops, I see it rated a paragraph in the Hill East/Poplar Point article from the Post.

Let's face it. The only thing I think of when I hear the word "boathouse," is the uber-creepy Possum Kingdom. Great song, but really creepy. ;D

I rowed at Gtown (and in high school out of Thompsons). No way would I have been happy to travel to choices 3 and 4. 1 and 2 are good distances, but with GW parkway Im not sure how easy the access would be from Key Bridge by foot (and it would be a nightmare getting a trailer of boats into or out of that area.)
But those could be good alternatives. Though, one of the main problems with Thompsons is that there is little private space for Gtown that can be used for off water training. Compared to opponents boathouses the erg room at Thompsons is pretty pathetic.

Rather than just reviewing Georgetown's proposal, the Park Service is now conducting a larger study of the potential creation of a "boathouse zone" - parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=39727Feasilibity Study To Implement A Non-Motorized Boathouse Zone Along The Georgetown WaterfrontThe National Park Service (NPS) is examining the feasibility of implementing a non-motorized boathouse zone along the District of Columbia's side of the Potomac River waterfront upstream of the Georgetown Waterfront Park. This study represents an opportunity for the NPS to identify specific ways to enhance access to the river for user groups, as well as complement the riverside experiences provided by the Georgetown Waterfront Park and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. This is particularly challenging, given that there is limited space for and a high amount of demand.
The NPS will be studying what structures and facilities can be accommodated within this non-motorized boathouse zone that are related to waterfront, access to the river, and are consistent with the necessary and appropriate uses for this zone. This study will lay the groundwork for future decision-making regarding (1) scenarios for development/improvement of NPS facilities and (2) further planning and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)/National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance as necessary to implement the non-motorized boathouse zone.

The last meeting they held was at the start of March. Presumably they're working on putting together the Feasibility Study now.

The Zoning Commission has approved the IAC. New renderings are up. IMO, these are by far the most attractive version of the building we've seen. But what the heck happened to the grassy park in front of McDonough? I'm very disappointed to see that scrapped in favor of parking. www.guhoyas.com/athletic-development/build_the_IAC.html

So is this new design larger that the previous one to accommodate the court yard or was there space lost?

I believe it is about the same size/footprint.
