I think it's great for SMU and great for the Big East. What's the downside for SMU here? If it works out, they hit a homerun and they become relevant. If it doesn't work out... oh well, they are SMU again and at least they got some good press. It's not like they are worried about Larry Brown ruining a great thing. They haven't made the tournament for 20 years. My thoughts. Their last coach was awful, and I can't even remember the last time they were mentioned on TV for basketball reasons. Only thing they can do is go up with this.

Great hire for SMU and the Big East. To me, the real story is the coaching staff he is assembling and the likley succession looks very solid once Brown leaves in a few years. From a coachign standpoint, Larry Brown will make the most of SMU and win games without the talent other teams have in the short-term. I cannot see a downside here for SMU.

Agree.. and because it is good for SMU, it is good for the Big East.

It will be interesting to see how the name Larry Brown resonates with young athletes. He has a rep of getting the most out of less in college and even pros. Can he win big time with lesser talented athletes?

One way the name Larry Brown might resonate with young athletes is by associating it with and showing them his shiny NCAA championship ring. Also, you mention of his career-long reputation of getting the most out of less and then immediately ask the question whether he can win big time with lesser talented athletes.... ....which makes me wonder whether you actually read anything that you post, or it's just a never-ending wellspring of cognitive dissonance.

He can get on the phone with any gm in the league and push a guy harder than someone without his pedigree.

Very impressive staff and awesome hire by SMU. Larry Brown, Tim Jankovich and Jerrance Howard are all connected to Bill Self. Self coached as a graduate assistant under Brown at KU. Jankovich was an assistant to Self at Illinois and Howard played for Self at Illinois.
This is tremendous news for SMU and the Big East. Really excited about both the short-term and long-term potential of that program now.

SMU wanted larry brown from the beginning, larry just had to decide if he wanted to coach again. The other coaches that interviewed for the job were just back up plans. I'm not trying to sound like i know everything but i have source who is very very close with larry. The funny thing is that coach cal learned everything from larry, going all the way back to larry's UCLA days. Brown treated his players back then like NBA players, if he didn't like them or didn't think they were good enough he basically wanted to trade them to another school, he didn't realize these kids actually go to class too. College basketball has changed where to now players are treated like they are in the NBA by being paid by schools, agents etc.. So maybe coming back to college basketball now is better for larry.

I'm not a conspiracy guy but this is ridiculous. Not a single mention on PTI. I'm speechless....those guys have speculated about Larry Brown returning to coaching once a month apropos of nothing for the last two years and today? Nada.

Kornheiser used to always write about how Larry Brown was his camp counselor at summer camp. So I find that hard to believe.

Kornheiser (as was discussed above) is friends with Brown (he was Tony's camp counselor many moons ago) and he has talked about it on his radio show all week.

Im not sure what you think you have proven- it was still ignored (either entirely or mostly) on the espn tv network. In fact what you say actually supports the notion by agreeing that this is something that korn and wilbon should have discussed...but they didnt on the most important show in sports not named Sportscenter. The question remains why wasnt it on espn's daily national news tv show then? It was unquestionably a top 10 news story yesterday. Do you think they might have mentioned it if Jimmy Johnson took a job coaching at say Indiana? Why was it all over his radio show and totally ignored on PTI where they discuss Larry Brown all the time? Is his radio show even ESPN? Doesnt really matter- why wasnt it inthe top 15 news stories on PTI yesterday?

I'm with the thebin here. Kornheiser's connection with Brown makes it hard to believe that the story would not have been featured on PTI without some kind of instruction not to talk about it.

Jeebus, the amount of tinfoil hats on this board is amazing. A conspiracy? Really. I'm no fan of ESPN, but if there really was a directive from Bristol not to talk about it, Kornheiser wouldn't have talked about it on his radio show on ESPN 980 ( sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=5543849).
