is official. Assistants to be hired/coach-in-waiting is not set in stone yet, but looks like Tim Jankovich from Illinois State is likely.
Opinions?

Good for the conference. Big name. Their current recruits will stay, and it could help with recruiting in the future.

Wow. And they got great assistants too. Jerrance Howard from Illinois, Rod Strickland from NBA/Memphis/Kentucky and the Tim Jankovich as coach in waiting. They went all out. Great for the Big East.

Not that Hoya fans needed any help, but that hire sure makes the loss of Magoo from the league seem a lot less of a deal.

This obviously wasn't a long term hire. This wasn't what was best for the program, and it wasn't a good move overall. Larry Brown is 71, c'mon guys

Surprised Brown was able to pull Strick away from Calipari. That is going to be a huge loss for Coach Cal more than he realizes.

Getting Rod Strickland was a great get and a huge loss for Caliperi. Strickland was instrumental in getting the young freshmen at Ky to buy into playing great defense. That really was the difference in the teams Calipari had at Memhis and his first two years at Ky. Those teams were talented but did not come close to playing the type of defense this years team did.

He hired Danny Manning's dad as assistant coach and low and behold the same year #1 recruit Danny Manning came to KU. "Former KU coach Larry Brown hired Ed to be his assistant in 1983, when Danny was a senior in high school in North Carolina and one of the most talented recruits in the country. According to a Sports Illustrated article, Ed, a former professional basketball player, had been a truck driver for the previous three years. Danny moved to Lawrence to finish his high-school career at Lawrence High, and he would soon commit to the Jayhawks. blogs.kansas.com/jayhawk/2011/03/04/former-ku-assistant-ed-manning-dies/

Strickland didn't really get taken away. Orchestrated by the CAA boys.

SMU has the best college basketball coach in the country, bar none, from a coaching standpoint.
He was dirty as heck in recruiting and yes, people will recruit against his age, but jeez, this is LARRY BROWN. In terms of coaching, he's one of the best coaches in the history of the NBA.

Makes prefect sense. ESPN (Syracuse network) is anti Big East. This is a big hire for the Big East so ESPN wants to down play it.

I think it's great for SMU and great for the Big East.
What's the downside for SMU here? If it works out, they hit a homerun and they become relevant. If it doesn't work out... oh well, they are SMU again and at least they got some good press. It's not like they are worried about Larry Brown ruining a great thing. They haven't made the tournament for 20 years.

The Larry Brown that has basically won everywhere he's been. Period. Why not love the hire?
