Norman Chad, the Washington Post's television critic, uses today's column to give a comical rant about why he can't stand Duke. In the course of it, he endears himself to all those on this board who can't stand John Feinstein: " Sure, I'm just a University of Maryland graduate -- Class of '81, without honors -- with a double major in American studies and parking tickets. Yes, we read while moving our lips and count using our fingers. And occasionally we've produced a journalist who, well, kind of makes stuff up. But we've never produced the likes of the unintentionally hilarious prose of Duke alum John Feinstein, the best-selling sports author who pens most of his books on the backs of carryout menus.
(Feinstein's latest is a basketball novel, "Last Shot: A Final Four Mystery." Here's an excerpt from page 79: "The door closed. She was right again. He knew he wouldn't sleep at all. There was just much too much to think about. And worry about." I assume the text is loosely translated from another language.)

I got tickets to the ACC Quarters on Friday night and was pretty close to the court. Then out of nowhere Feinstein walks right by and is about 5 feet from me sitting down and talking to Red Auerbach. Very cool.
I wanted to take my shoe and throw it at Feinstein, but I may have hit Red...not worth the risk.

Since this is my first year as a diehard Hoya fan, Im not really too aware of the history between Feinstein and the Hoya program, other than that he didnt get along with the Original Coach Thompson. However, I'm pretty sure the book you quoted from is a children's mystery book he wrote recently, which explains why the wording is so simplistic.

I'll never forget when Cam callled out to Feinstein at the NCAA tourney at MCI a few years ago. Feinstein looked up at us with a huge smile on his face as if he was over-joyed to be recognized, at which point Cam started going to town on him: "Get the hell out of here you Duke-loving SOB...!" I don't remember the whole rant I just remember laughing my butt off.

John Feinstein has held a grudge against JTII dating back to his days as a cub reporter for the Post covering Georgetown basketball back in the 80's, when JTII placed severe restrictions on media access to his team. I believe he didn't allow any of his freshmen players to be interviewed by the media (same practice as John Wooden). I also think that Feinstein is credited with coining the term 'Hoya paranoia' to describe the situation. Feinstein was looking to build his sports journalism career on JTII's recruitment of Patrick Ewing, and when his access was denied, I think he took it personally.

Cam was the man on that one. I loved seeing him scurry away after realizing we weren't planning on serenading him with anything but f-bombs.
Please...they said we couldn't drink at the NCAA games. Nice try MCI Center.

Feinstein was looking to build his sports journalism career on JTII's recruitment of Patrick Ewing, and when his access was denied, I think he took it personally. Also, I think Feistein wanted to write a book about JT2 and their was some disagreement about money, so JT2 refused to do the book and Feinstein ended up writing about Bobby Knight instead. Feinstein called JT2 a hypocrite because JT2 always preached to his players that money isn't everything, stay and get an education, but Thompson was concerned about money when it came to the book Feinstein wanted to write. Check this part out about what feels about G'town: www.usatoday.com/community/chat/2001-03-12-feinstein.htmThe excerpt reads from 2001: Alexandria, Virginia: I know you often get questions from Georgetown fans critical of you for your comments regarding John Thompson and Georgetown basketball. While Thompson is certainly a controversial and somewhat unpopular person, many Georgetown fans are truly curious as to the basis for your apparent animosity for Thompson and Georgetown. Would you please comment? John Feinstein: I have been critical of Thompson and am not a fan of the current coach. They try to put themselves on a pedestal. They mis-stated graduation rates while Thompson was there. I have nothing against the kids who have played there.

Apparently Feinstein and Big John have reconciled. They may have reconciled, but I am not part of their rapprochement. I still think Feinstein looks like a cross between Sponge Bob and a sausage pizza.

That was from 2001, when Esh was the head coach. Even though they are still reconciled, John Feinstein still throws jabs at JT2 and G'town, like how he could schedule St. Leo's of the world but not particpate in HIS BB&T classic (that was this year in the Post in one of his columns). In the past,Feinstein has also said John Thompson is not interested in charity. He said the only charity John Thompson, Jr is interested in is John Thompson, INC. Basically, John Feinstein is a prick, and JT2 doesn't mind calling a prick a prick, in so many words. Feinstein's ego is enormous. He likes to leach off coaches for his own personal finances by writing books and couldn't take it when JT2 wouldn't let him leach off of him.

"what's his beef w/JT3?"
The date of the quote from the_way is back in 2001. So I think Feinstein was referring to Esherick, not JTIII. That beef might have to do with GU's stance re: the BB&T which is Feinstein's deal.

That beef might have to do with GU's stance re: the BB&T which is Feinstein's deal. Exactly. He was talking about Esh. Feinstein's "beef" is purely financial. He wants to fatten his pockets. Nothing wrong with that, this is America. But, I think he could be more professional and suppress his ego when talking about G'town.

I like Feinstine. Couldn't give a crap about his dealings with JT2. His books are great.

tinyurl.com/45om4 - A very brief summary of discussions re: Feinstein on Kornheiser's radio show this morning. If I wasn't in the midst of finals I'd write up the whole thing.
