CUSA was a major waiting to happen, then it just collapsed and now is being abandoned by everyone except Memphis.
Again, I agree with your overall point, I was just wading into the details...

Looking ahead to next year's schedule. So, we know that the Big East has decided that each team plays 13 teams once, 3 teams twice, and three teams not at all. So, I think we all agree that the matchups will by decided by potential TV revenue, which in the past boded ill for us. However, I think the BET game against UConn, the OT game against Cuse and the first Notre Dame game definitely sent ESPN a message regarding our TV viability to the extent that Katz even commented on how we will get more slots next year. With that in mind, I turn to the New Big East and try to guess which teams we will meet.
Now just for fun, I broke down this past year's schedule into three equal sized groups: teams we played once, twice and never.
Teams we played once: @ Syracuse (20) vs Providence (94) vs West Virginia (34) @ Pittsburgh (36) vs Seton Hall (134)
Teams we played twice: UConn (13) Notre Dame (73) Villanova (15) Rutgers (144) St. John's (165)
Teams we didn't play: Cincinnati (23) DePaul (53) Louisville (12) Marquette (89) South Florida (169)
If the BE was logical it would probably choose one team from each group to double up and another from each group to never play. This would spread around the double ups and make sure that the new guys get integrated pretty evenly.
With that in mind, here's the schedule I'm hoping for: OOC: @ Illinois (2) @ Michigan (157) @ San Jose St. (282) vs Delaware St. (129) vs Hampton (179) vs American (143) vs Niagara (96) vs George Washington (54) vs Vanderbilt (74) vs Davidson (78) Pre-Season NIT
Conference: vs Syracuse (20) @ Syracuse (20)
vs Villanova (15) @ Villanova (15)
vs Louisville (12) @ Louisville (12)
@ Providence (94) @ West Virginia (34) vs Pittsburgh (36) vs Seton Hall (134) vs UConn (13) @ Notre Dame (73) vs St. John's (165) @ Marquette (89) vs DuPaul (53) @ Cincinnati (23)

It seems most big east teams have a similar schedule to ours BUT do not have the MEAC and Citadel drags that we schedule. I think just ridding the 225+ RPI teams and replacing with 100s would be enough to get a Top 40 RPI, given we go 9-7 in the conference. I still think a few OOC marquee games would be great for recruiting and national exposure and the RPI.
OR
We could take Pitt's path, play no one out of conference and then do damage in the conference. I would take a 36 rpi next season, but a 10-6 BE record is very doubtful, that may very well be the number of w's needed to win the conference next season.

Anyone who wants to see scheduling improve and has some time to put into it, I have this idea: First, go to this link to download a file of where it’s already at - www.dailys.info/hoyas/ - then click Schedule v1. a. A couple of people put in a large number of schools that would be viable by group. To begin with, this could be based either on: * This years’ records * Recent track record and where a program is headed Useful and easy resources for this are: sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/standings - all conferences www.collegerpi.com/ - if you click on the By Schools dropdown menu on the left, and type the first couple letters of a school name, it will come up on the list, and hitting return goes direct to their page. You can also view by conference on the left. Or if you already know the programs - that would be great. b. A person or two enter the Winning Percentages and do the likelihoods of a quality win (if anyone wanted, they could enter the factors on the right too) One person could do both a and b above, but if needed it could be divvied up among several people. Please let me know who’s interested via email: contact a --t-- dailys.info and I can coordinate it. c. I can write an overview for it d. We can post it to the board for feedback e. Post final version to board and ask people to email it, mail it and/or deliver it to AD staff, coaches, etc. They would have rationale and a list of who to best choose from. I can put it in a printable format, and also post it to a website (in viewable on screen format and downloadable format) so just a quick link and people can see it. With all the people on this board (both with and without connections to the program), the chances of getting it in hands of people who make the decisions are high. I have one connection that’s decent. Again, please email if you might be interested in this and we can talk off-line.
