also great to point out how well we played the zone. everyone still thinks we were primarily a man defense program. we had length at every position. That's correct, sleepy. I've noted several times this year, when they were commenting on our zone, announcers mentioned that Pops always played man. This is a myth. Ewing on the wing was devastating.

Just watched this for the first time since I was 11. Not to be negative, but could Fred Brown have missed any more layups? Anyway, wish AJ had stayed; he'd have developed nicely. Sleepy was a beast, while Ewings offense wasn't that far behind his D. I had forgotten how much he frustrated Mizzou with his D. The team D was great too.

Can't wait to watch this one sober for the first time. Ahhhhhh, Don Ho's beer tickets! An all-time great gameday experience.

Question for long time Hoya fans. Did Georgetown remove bleachers from McDonough since that game. I been to McDonough once, and watched a game on TV (2005 NIT). That placed looked packed in 1982, and I can't believe that we could get 4000+ in McDonough today. Thanks for the memories. A great trip down memory lane

Anthony Jones trying to make the college transition from High school PF to wing/2g was going to be very tough especially with Reggie Williams on his way. I will never forget a spectacular display by him in the 82 BE tourney in Hartford where scored about 9 straight in about a 4 minute span against a tough Villanova team in the Championship game. It turned a very close game into a rout.

A great trip down memory lane The bleachers at the south end of McDonough were always temporary and could hypothetically be put back in place for a game today. The balconies on the east side of the arena have been sealed off to create more office space.

Thanks for posting. I remember this game being the single loudest game I ever attended. Interesting to watch Ewing in this video and compare him to Anthony Davis and some of the modern day freshman sensations. Pat was an all time great college player. Can't believe a player like that was able to play 4 seasons.
I think most of us remember Sleepy's greatest skill was his deadly outside shooting. But just as impressive was his athleticism and, in particular, his vertical leap. On the tip-in off the missed lay-up, he got up really really high.
Amazing to think after landing a class of Ewing, Martin, and Jones, we added Michael Jackson and David Wingate the next season and Reggie Williams the season after. We were basically recruiting like UNC, Ohio State, Duke, and Kentucky are today back then.

Awesome. Also, it's weird seeing Enberg and Norm Stewart with that much hair.

Loved enberg. did NFL on NBC then too. Oh my!
That Hoya team was crazy deep in talent.
Would '82 team have beaten '84 or '85 team?

My favorite line: After calling the gym "a confessional," McGuire looks at the overflowing crowd and says, "I think the fire chief is on vacation."

Loved enberg. did NFL on NBC then too. Oh my! That Hoya team was crazy deep in talent. Would '82 team have beaten '84 or '85 team? Interesting question ID. First, do we acknowledge that the Jr. and Sr Pat Ewing of the 84 and 85 teams was better than the Fr. Ewing of the '82 team? - same idea applies to others who were on two or three of these teams? Second, the biggest Plus for the '82 team was clearly Sleepy Floyd, arguably the greatest guard in Hoya history. Other key guys who played only on the '82 team were Eric Smith and Mike Hancock -- both excellent and probably under-rated Hoyas. Third - BUT, added to the '84 team was some serious talent, including Michael Jackson, Ralph Dalton (I don't think he played in '82 due to injury, though he was at GU), Michael Graham and... here's what puts it over the top I think -- David Wingate AND Reggie Williams. '82's Eric Smith and Mike Hancock were very good, but they were not Wingate and Williams. Though neither the soph Wingate nor the frosh Williams were close to the senior Floyd of '82. As for '85, you had basically the same guys from '84, but now a year older and better, I don't recall any newly added freshmen making a big difference, but the team did lose not only Michael Graham (as we all know), but also Fred Brown and Gene Smith. Looking at it on paper like that? Seems like '84 should be the winner. But from memory? Well, I was and am a HUGE Sleepy Floyd fan. Teaming out best ever guard with our best ever player (and center) -- well, I really like that team. (And I really like the '80 team with soph Floyd and Senior Duren - GU's best ever backcourt - and also Sr. Craig Shelton.) Also, many have said the '85 team was even better than '84 - and they had an incredible season. To compensate for the three guys they lost, the key guys were all a year older i.e. Seniors Ewing and Bill Martin (and RS Jr. Dalton), Juniors Jackson, Broadnax and Wingate, and Soph Reggie Williams. I would be interested to hear others' views, but I'd probably say '84, then '85, then '82 -- though it pains me no end to put '82 last in any Hoya list!

Re: getting the '80 Iowa game, idHOya, that has been the Great White Whale of game tapes for a few of us for years (even if we all felt like we suffered the same fate as Captain Ahab did when that game ended), but so far no luck in finding. I did google around yesterday and found the University of Iowa supposedly has it on VHS in their library for viewing but not for sale, so it seems to exist. What we need now is a Hoya in Iowa with persuasive skills to do some haggling/copying/posting for us all . . . And while we're on the subject, if anybody would happen to have access to a game tape of the Detroit or GW wins in '78 at McDonough . . .

The Iowa game would be a great find, but at least we know it exists. Did either team take video footage from the 1975 WVU game? Even if it wasn't on TV, it's theoretically possible WVU could have had a Super8 camera somewhere in the Coliseum. I'd also like to see the Central Michigan game the following week, on the odd chance an NCAA game would have been televised or recorded for scouting purposes.
Another tape that should exist is the 1980 Syracuse game, but I've only seen brief clips of it.

I've had a few different conversations over the years with the athletic department about mining their game films for exactly this audience/as a money making endeavor, but it never has gotten any traction. I remember a few years back sitting at a JTIII dinner with a young member of the staff who said an old alum had just donated a boatload (like, literally a uhaul full) of old footage and other memorabilia to the athletic department that they were going to look through and maybe do something to make it available. But of course never happened. I think it may take a decorated alum with an unmatched historical vitae (that's spelled "DFW") to get the department to open the Georgetown Basketball Vault (to borrow a phrase) for this stuff!

He had a very good game vs Oregon State in the NCAAs that year, where the team shot over 70% from the field. AJ came to UNLV and in Sept. of that year, I saw him walking along Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas, and almost offered him a ride (which, of course, would probably have been an NCAA violation - but he was on UNLV by then, so what did I care ).

Tonight's WVU game at McD has gotten me nostalgic. Anyone know if the video of the Mizzou games can still be found somewhere?

Without even clicking the link, I can still remember a few things vividly from this game (which was broadcast out here in LA on NBC Channel 4).
I remember Al McGuire saying of Ewing, "I knew he was far along defensively. I didn't know he was this far along offensively."
I remember Stipo not being able to get ANYTHING going against Ewing, Sunvold not doing much either, and Frazier basically carrying the team and being an unstoppable one-man show for a goodly portion of the contest.
Finally, I recall Pat swooping over from the weakside on defense and swatting a ball into the CROWD. My brother (a Georgetown Med grad) leaped out of his seat for that one.
