Talked a lot about how at any prominent school the athletic director doesn't make the schedule coaches do. I can't do it justice we'll have to wait for the audio to be uploaded to their website. Basically he did an excellent job of making Kevin Anderson look like an idiot with out doing it in a yelling or combative way. He also repeatedly kept asking for the Maryland AD's name again and again.

no doubt the UMD fans will call him a racist and yell and scream about how we owe them a game and we need them, and we're scared etc etc....and no doubt BUM will take their side and publish some crap soon.

CWS - the summary is great...I love the "what's the gentleman's name" part.
I feel bad for both coaches - i have no doubt Mark T is a decent guy from his comments and he is put in the middle of this without causing any of it or making any poor public comments...JT III has to deal with people that hated his father even though he is his own man.
My guess now - anderson is gone in 2 - 4 years. a year or so later Mark T calls up JT III and they talk in private about 2 or 4 games...I dont think the game will be annual but probably every 5 or 6 years there will be a home and home. Thing is - i actually don't think either coach wants the game. yes UMD could use it now - but if / when they get good - they aren't going to want it. I think they both prob like to say - eh you don't want to go to xx school - they don't even want to play us...

did Big John really just say he wanted GU in the ACC? damn, that ain't right What was the context? If the Big East ever collapses and Georgetown could somehow get into the ACC as a non-football member (it's hard to see this ever actually happening), I agree that the ACC would be the best place to land.

How many of these out-of-conference rivalry games still exist anyway? Kentucky-Louisville, obviously, but I can't think of that many others.
This is about Maryland trying to bolster its recruiting in the DC area. There is no other compelling reason for the game.

The way it sounded in the context of the live show was that if you want someone to do something for you you offer them an incentive not threaten them. So Maryland sponsoring Georgetown to join the ACC would be an example of something that Maryland could do if they wanted to play us yearly. I mean joining the ACC would be great for Georgetown in terms of long term stability.

I confess I have always had mixed feelings about Pops - he did a lot of very important things right (academics, discipline, community, etc.), but from time to time he was more brash and antagonistic than I wished, recruited some kids I wish he hadn't. I kinda wish he would move on a bit more from the program than he has. JT3 is much more my style.
In his radio show, he's avuncular in an appealing way, but really rambles, as he did in those quotes above. I'm not sure there's a lot of eloquence there. But I agree with the points he was trying to make, and *really* like the way he inserted academics into that conclusion.

I first became aware of something along these lines in the fall, when I went to the men's soccer scrimmage against Maryland and learned that some members of the Maryland AD were boycotting the game (which we won, 1-0, btw. Yes it was just a scrimmage, but it was still thoroughly enjoyable). I was rather surprised that anyone there would really care that much, especially given the outcome of the last meeting and the general trajectory of their program (there's a reason we haven't heard anything lately from GW about playing them). I just assumed it was some lower-level folks who grew up as Terps fan in the DC Metro area and held a grudge against GU from an early age. Never would have thought that this was the smoke of a fire being fanned from the top. I'm generally a big proponent of playing local teams in any and all sports, but this nonsense has really poisoned the well. Anderson's missive has the effect of ensuring that Georgetown refuse, lest McDonough look like it got punked. I almost have to think this was Anderson's goal: to get the people demanding to know when Maryland will be playing Georgetown off of his back once and for all by cementing the impasse. Either way, this is a pretty hamfisted way of doing it. How many of these out-of-conference rivalry games still exist anyway? Kentucky-Louisville, obviously, but I can't think of that many others. This is about Maryland trying to bolster its recruiting in the DC area. There is no other compelling reason for the game. I've tried to come up with a list of recognizable non-conference rivalries. The ones that immediately come to mind are UK-Louisville, Clemson/South Carolina, and Xavier/Cincinnati. I know there are plenty of others like the Mizzou/Illinois "Braggin' Rights" game, and now Utah and BYU. There's also a big lower tier with stuff like the Philly Big Five and WVU/Marshall, which is a real rivalry but not the undisputed main one the way the others are. The first three seem like the most widely recognized to me, though. The other compelling reason for the game, as noted elsewhere, is money.

Florida/Florida St?
Certainly still true for football, and I think basketball as well (shudders at thought that I am inviting a response from hifi).

It makes no sense to play Maryland in basketball. It's a wasted home game that will likely have, at best, a neutral court feel to it.
I think Georgetown should try and play a national team in the non confernece, not a school they can bus to.
Besides Duke, I'd like to see Michigan State and Kentucky on the schedule at some point. Maybe Indiana or UCLA. Schools like that. Not Maryland.

I would also love to see UVA if only because we need to see a team grind us on D before the BE schedule. Bennett's teams will do that.

Nice take on the issue in the other Washington paper this AM (link below) . . . WaPo had a Tracee Hamilton piece this AM that in a rather lowkey way takes the "gee, it would be great if they played each other" perspective but pretty bland overall. The local radio stuff has mostly been "Kevin Anderson is an idiot for thinking this would do anything but backfire." I think the story has pretty much played itself out at this point, with MD/Anderson getting far the worst of it . . . www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/feb/21/snyder-kevin-andersons-power-play-only-hurts-maryl/

Turg seems like a smart guy. "JT and I need to be on the same page - thats most important". At least someone out there knows what is what. They need to get rid of anderson - guy is a clown.

Maryland has a day of reckoning over the next few years. Anderson signed Edsall to a guaranteed 6 year, $12 million contract, and after year one, the fan base has already turned. The transfers are increasing, the debt service is due on Tyser Tower (the luxury boxes) and more empty seats in Byrd Stadium will follow. Even if they wanted to cut ties with Edsall, they can't easily buy out the contract. Cutting the eight sports won't solve it either. Anderson's less concerned about a rivalry and all about raising money. The problem is that if things get really bad, he's expendable and the coaches are not, which is why Turgeon wisely takes the longer view.

They weren't selling out their stadium so they invested in a bigger one. All you need to know about the brilliance that is Maryland Athletics.
