Shoulda beat MD in '01. Had a huge team with WW, Sweets, RBB, Samnick and Scruggs. Never forgive Esh for what he did to AP.

I will reserve judgement until the season is over, but I am confident that this Hoya team is going to crash my top ten list of favorites, I just don't know where. As of right now, my list includes: 1.) 1984. National Championship and the best Hoya defensive team ever. 2.) 1987. Reggie and the Miracles. 9-1 against top 25 teams. Perry McDonald intimidating Rony Seikaly (we beat them three times) with the typical lineup being Reggie, a 6-4 Perry McDonald, a just-emerged sophomore Charles Smith and Freshmen Dwayne Brant and Mark Tillmon. 3.) 1982. The world learns about the Hoyas (and is doomed to watch Michael Jordan's winning shot a zillion times). 4.) 1985. Our most dominant team overall. Damn you Villanova. 5.) 2007. The most relentlessly efficient offensive machine in Hoya history. Comeback victory over UNC in Regional final as good a win as we have ever had. 6.) 1978. My senior year. We lose Derrick Jackson and miss the NCAAs but are good enough to make an NIT final without our best player. 7.) 1980. Duren, Sleepy and Sky and a Final Four we could have won. 8.) 1989. A freshman Alonzo blocking everything in sight and Charles Smith as Big East MVP. I hate Danny Ferry. 9.) 2006. Renaissance. Beat #1 Duke and played Florida closer in the Sweet 16 than any of their other NCAA games in their back to back championship years. 10.) 1996. Inconsistent, but overwhelmingly explosive at their best. Honorable Mention: 1975, 1977, 1979, 1990, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2008. Chris! I am astonished! After waiting YEARS for the updated Top 100 players list, and knowing how you like to wait to see who deserves inclusion based on their entire body of work, we now have you including the current team in your top 10 on January 6th! AND You put Greg W in as the 7th player included in your super elite TOP Hoya Defenders of ALL TIME -- after only 3 BE games! Well I know one thing, I'm rushing out to buy myself a bottle of 30 year old Glenfiddich! Hey man, great list. All deserving teams. My biggest change would be moving 1980 up. It was our first really GREAT Hoya team. "Closed" Manley Field House Beat Cuse in the first ever Big East Tournament Final First big time appearance on the national stage -- elite eight Had the greatest backcourt in Hoya History - Ba Ba and Sleepy Had our first year with two draft picks -- Ba Ba and Big Sky Well Done Chris -- love the historical perspective you provide!

Two seasons that usually get ignored because of early exits in the NCAA deserve some note:
1989-90 (24-7): Never ranked lower than #8 all season, were 22-4 heading into the final weekend of the regular season. Six of its seven losses by five or fewer points, the last full year of Mourning and Mutombo together, an underrated senior class (Tillmon, Bryant, Allen, Jefferson) coupled with the singularly most unproductive recruiting class in modern history (Tate, Sabol, Edwards, Stoudamire). Any help from the freshmen might have been enough to get past Xavier in round 2.
2007-08: (28-6): Undefeated at home, 25-4 in the regular season, tremendous wins over Marquette and Louisville to win the regular season title. Probably one player short of greatness, unfortunately that missing player was Jeff Green.

Favorite is different than best. This year's team has potential but the jury is still out so::
1. 1989 - Smitty and Zo 2. 1996 - AI, Othella, JYD 3. 1982 - Sleepy, Patrick and heartbreak 4. 1970 - Artie White, Adrion, Laska

Here's my list FWIW
1. 84: Besides HoyaChris' comments, it was my (and DFW's!) senior year!! Also, the Houston final was my 21st Birthday! 2. 85: Yes, the most dominant team ever. 3. 82: Breakout year with Patrick: Dominated SJU at the Garden, Missouri at McDonough and Oregon State in the Elite Eight in an absolute whitewash. 4. 89: The best GU team not to make the Final Four (I know that's a tough call over the Duren/Shelton/Sleepy team of 80)--they were ranked #2 going into the tourney and throttled Seikaly and Coleman in the BET final. Duke was never legit until after they got past us that year. 5. 07: Redemption to get back to FF under III after so many years---another BET final rout over Pitt and the magic against UNC in the Meadowlands. 6. 80: Pops' first team to truly burst out on the national scene; Swept the Twerps twice, nicely closed down Manley Field House and came back late against BC. Iowa/Olson had to have an 85 Villanova type shooting display in the second half to win in the Elite Eight. 7. 87: Reggie & the Miracles--in their defense I might have rated them higher except I missed seeing the entire season in Peru. Found out about the Providence heartbreaker several days after that weekend... 8. 96: AI and Victor thrilled us but this team underachieved in losing the BET final and the disaster to UMass 9. 95: A sweet return to the Sweet Sixteen after six years---imagine if we'd landed Rasheed instead of UNC... 10. 06: Another sweet return to the Sweet Sixteen after five years---recent posts properly recall the Bad Brandon late layup miss as just as critical to the outcome as DJ's missed 3.
HM: 01, 00 (VA NIT 4-ot thriller-corrected thx to Maroon), 92 (for Alonzo's farewell and his near block at the end of the BET final)
One more category: Disappointing finishes to seasons (besides the obvious ones)----86, Scott Skiles trash-talking to Pops during 86 second round game; 90-- the Xavier flameout and more recent stints in 08, 10 and 11....

Ahem... the VA NIT 4-OT thriller was in 2000. This was also the first time something that happened in my four years on the Hilltop is mentioned, and 97-00 are not being overlooked. There's a serious argument that the final three wins (Page at the buzzer against WVU in BET, SUcks in BET, UVA) were the three best wins of the four-year span.

These guys keep playing like they are, and they'll be in my top five for SURE. Heck, they might already be in my top ten!
Here's my list. I'm only going to include teams that have been playing since I started paying attention in the late 90s (so it's much weaker than a lot you guys' who have been watching longer), so I'll only do Top 5.
2007 Final Four, Big East Champions (Reg Seas and Tourney, beating the pants off Pitt), beating UNC, Wallace-Ewing-Green-Sapp-Hibbert-and company, and I got to watch the Vandy game live. Oh, and an epically huge Final Four party in DC. Yeah, this one's a lifer until we exceed it. What else can be said? A lot, and that's the point!
2006 The WILL TO WIN that this team showed was outstanding. The win over #1, undefeated Duke on 1/21/06 put this team on the map and this coach on the radar, and marked the first time I can remember that we had a TRUE home court advantage from then on. Remember just how fun these guys were to watch? Barely lost to Florida in the Sweet 16, too. You knew watching these guys all season that something special was brewing.
2008 Hibbs knocks down the 3 to beat UConn. We win a close one over Louisville to win consecutive Big East Reg Season championships. Losing to Pitt was painful, and Davidson was surreal. Still, one of the great Hoya season-long performances of the past 20 years.
2001 "I put 'em to sleep, and then I exploded." The words that described the actions that spawned Generation Burton. This team - with Braswell, Sweetney, AP, Burton, Boumtje-Boumtje, Scruggs, Hunter, Samnick, and Wilson limped into the Tourney as a 10 seed after losing to SHU in the Big East after only scoring 8 points in the second half. Then they beat 7-seed Arkansas, watched 15-seed Hampton beat 2-seed Iowa State, and lost to a stacked UMCP team in Anaheim. Make no mistake: if you watched that game in person, there was no way Lonnie Baxter and Juan Dixon were losing. It is what it is. Best St. Patty's EVER. Viva Boise!
2010 Let's leave the disappointment of losing to Ohio in Round 1 aside for a moment. These guys lost DaJuan to the draft, had humongous highs and abysmal lows, beat Duke in front of the Prez, rocked Nova's world during Snowmageddon, found out Austin Freeman had diabetes, and then went on a TEAR in the Big East Tourney (dubbed the "Revenge Tour") by beating USF, torching Marquette, and stunning Syracuse before losing a really close one to WVU. All season, we lost games we should have won and won games we should have lost. It was one of the best examples of a Heart Attack Hoyas year I've ever experienced.

This thread should actually be renamed the youngsters favorite Hoya teams thread. How could anyone leave off the 1953 NIT semifinalists!? Where's EasyEd anyway?

Coast2Coast makes a very strong case for 2010.
I'm obviously a young'n without much perspective here, but I think people are really undervaluing the 2008 team. Starting the season in the top 5. Wallace's homecoming victory over Alabama. *Not* losing to Memphis. The free throws against Marquette. The three against UConn. Freeman's rookie season. The "foul"fest against 'Nova, resulting in more free throws. Winning the BE on a Summers (remember when we liked him?) jumper late over Louisville. (OK, so I'm partial to my senior year.)
2007 was obviously the best in my experience as a Hoya fan. The BET run was tremendous, especially the laugher against Pitt at the end. A true coronation.

The problem is you can never leave out the disappointment of losing to Ohio. More so than 2008, this was the real missed opportunity of the JTIII era. This team could have made a humongous run in the tourney, and the way it ended up shaking out, could absolutely have won the damn thing. I don't think I've ever been as upset as a fan as I was sitting outside of a bar in Philly that night we lost to Ohio.

I love the 2010 team. I don't think though that any of their wins were ones that they shouldn't have won. I do agree they had a bunch of losses that were ridiculous.
Only been following the Hoyas since 1988 (maybe '87). Best team from my perspective was definitely the '88-'89 squad. Therefore I will always despise Leattner.

This year's team has already cracked the top 10 and is pushing top 5.
Never has a Hoya team come into the season with less fan fare, with so many underclassmen, with the future of the conference and the program in doubt, and fresh off an international incident that made the cover of the NY Times and put all that behind them and simply balled. If we win today, we are #7 in the country, highest regular season ranking since 2007. In what is a pivotal season for Georgetown in so many ways, this team is making sure the future of Georgetown Basketball remains bright.

I am confident that this Hoya team is going to crash my top ten list of favorites TODAY's version of the 2011/12 Hoyas isn't going to crash anyone's list of top ten favorites. Today they just plain crashed.
