I remember Ewing used to catch, take one step in the paint, extend and shoot the hook. Seemingly all in one motion. Bigs nowadays dribble too much trying to gather themselves. Ewing didn't do that; of course his wingspan was ridiculous, so he could get it off vs. anybody.
Not comparing, I just thought about this while reading Hendawgs TO troubles.

I loved Henry's drive to the basket from the top of the key for an easy lay-up. Although he didn't lift much, the defender couldn't keep up for the easy basket. Hope he does it more (without the TOs)....

I like to look at the facts. According to the box score, Henry had 3 TO's, all in the second half. Here they are: 2nd half: 15:58 - Nate gets it in to Henry around Nate's defender with another defender on Henry's back. Henry looks back at the defender and turns before catching the passed ball and fumbles. 8:46 - Henry tries to back his defender and go around him, but is called for the hook around and grab. Offensive foul. 3:00 - Henry tries to back his defender, but loses ball. Two of the three were of the fumbling senior version and one was a clear hook and grab offensive foul. But, that's not all. Although the following two instances were not called TOs by Henry, I'll let you be the judge: 1st half: 10:37 - Henry makes a hard pass to the feet of Nate, who is cutting hard to the basket. There's no way Nate can catch it and the ball ends up kicked out of bounds by Nate. Both of the announcers make fun of the pass - It counted as a TO for Nate. 8:54 - Henry makes a great move around his defender and goes up. Instead of dunking it (it was there for the dunking), he tries a finesse jumper from 1 ft., airballs it over the rim, grabs the rebound and gets blocked going up. In that situation, not dunking and missing is the same as a TO. So, one turnover was a result of a badly executed (but aggressive) pass? See what I mean? I'll give you all 5 turnovers--only one was a result of his passing. Did you by any chance see in the box score any open shots that Henry's passing created that were missed by the shooter?

The majority of Henry's turnovers come from him being super soft and weak with the ball. Bottom line. I lov his game and how he's been playing but these are easily correctable mistakes. All he has to do is be aware of people swarming him and hold on to the damn ball.

TBird, I'm not putting down his passing skills. I'm saying that he needs to cut down on his turnovers, or be more careful with the ball, for the team to be better. His turnovers are coming from all over his game, not just passing, and that's why I did the breakdown of his turnovers. As I said before, the less turnovers, the more opportunities for assists, points and wins.

But for some reason, this thread about Henry's passing became about Henry's assists and about his turnovers. One involves passing, one involves the entirety of his offensive game. I wanted to make sure that people didn't think turnovers = bad passes

Henry is now getting noticed around the country for his passing and, to a lesser degree, so is Nate. Big man passing has been a major part of our offense under JT3 and is really great to watch. That doesn't make it risk- or error-free, but I'll take it.

He's got 42 already, and is on pace to get to about 70. If he gets there, he'd join Greg Monroe, Merlin Wilson and Jeff Green (and one assumes Henry will get there this year) as the only Hoya Big Men to get 70 assists. The only time the Hoyas have had two Big Men as good at passing as these two was with Jeff & Roy.

Nate and Henry are now the first Big Men pair in Hoya history to each have 50+ assists in a season.

Henry Sims' 5 assists today make him only the 3rd Hoya Big Man to ever get 100 assists in a season.
