To be honest, I think the Coaches (and probably some AP voters) are reluctant to rank Georgetown high at this point because there is a sense (whether right or wrong) that the Hoyas play better in the non-conference against teams that are unfamiliar with our offense. I think that's fair. With that said, if we handle business against Howard, American, Memphis and Louisville - I think Georgetown will be right on the edge of the Top 10, or better, going into the new year. I think you make a very valid point about familiarity (although Bama had no problems shutting us down for much of that game). Where I disagree is that I don't think the coaches/interns put that much thought into ranking us at that spot. I think 18 is about right for us (leaving aside the Bama issue).

The rankings in many cases make no sense. Call me crazy...i still look at them with interest. In addition to Memphis being too high, it seems to me that Michigan and Creighton have no quality wins and worse losses. Its early in the season....we need to win the BE in order to get some respect. Winning at L'ville would be a nice start.

What is with the guy from Richmond Times Dispatch (Phillips)? Apparently losing to an unranked team at home means you should go up in the polls, notwithstanding the fact that the unranked team should stay unranked.

Does anybody really think that the coaching staff or players are going to say, "Hey look, we're ranked #18, so we can stop working now?" I think that's absurd and arguments we'd be better off not being ranked don't make sense either. The rankings are meaningless, but as long as they are there, why not be ranked?
If we have players that are going to quit giving as much effort because of a poll, then we've recruited the wrong people. HOWEVER, I am 100% confident our players will work hard and continue to improve as the season goes on. They aren't going to throw in the towel because they've suddenly got a ranking.
I'd love to be as high as possible every week because it would mean we are REALLY GOOD.

Eamonn Brennan of ESPN:
Other than A&M, there are three new additions to the poll this week, and all of them are deserving. Harvard is 8-0 and looking very impressive in advance of a clash with UConn in Hartford this week. Illinois is 8-0 and coming off a win at Maryland and a home win over Gonzaga. Georgetown, meanwhile, comes in at No. 21, and I have absolutely no problem with that. The Hoyas were impressive in Maui and followed that up with a big-time nonconference road win over No. 15 Alabama last week. The only qualms here: Why shouldn't Georgetown be ranked higher than Memphis? The Hoyas beat Memphis in Maui, after all, and Memphis has two losses to the Hoyas' one. . . . . The Memphis thing remains baffling. With the possible exception of A&M, perhaps no team is the recipient of more baffling coaches' poll love than the Tigers. Apparently those blowout wins over Jackson State and Austin Peay really impressed the voters this week. Who knows? Actually, I think "Who knows?" should be the official motto of "Poll Thoughts." That, or "Oh well."

OT a bit, but... when was the last time Harvard been ranked? Ever? Good for them, looking forward to their Thursday throwdown at #9 UConn on Thursday night on ESPN2.

The Hoyas rankings are a subject of this week's "Poll Attacks" from Gary Parrish at CBSSports.com: "Leaving Georgetown unranked is dumb. Leaving Georgetown unranked when you rank Alabama and Memphis is even dumber. But multiple Associated Press voters did it this week. Their punishment is an apperance in the Poll Attacks." eye-on-college-basketball.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/26283066/33712802

Yes, yes, ultimately the polls in college basketball mean very little, so I don't get my panties too knotted up when I see two teams we beat ranked ahead of us. But I'm glad someone is pointing out imbecilic individual polls from sportswriters. (does he do the same for coaches?) It is their JOB to cover this sport. That means they need to be paying attention. The ballots that Parrish singles out are simply indicative of people who are clearly NOT paying attention to the sport they get paid to cover. Honestly, sportswriters who demonstrate a pattern of submitting indefensible ballots like these should have those ballots taken away from them. Never happen, I'm sure, but at least there's some watchdogging going on.

He does critique the coaches poll but since they don't release the individual ballots he can only do so in general rather than individually.

I too like high rankings in Ken Pom early but like pash noted the past two years Ken Pom has biased his ratings until the first few games of conference play when almost all the teams become interrelated. This early the past few years, I have liked sagarin at USA today but it also is biased. Sagarin clearly states at the top when his ratings become unbiased. I have not seen the same clear posting on Ken Pom but do believe he commented on it in his blog last year. Will need to ante up my $20 soon as I am missing the tempo free breakdowns and while hoya prospectus is excellent it does not replace Ken Pom.

Sagarin is already unbiased. Another great site for rankings is rpiforecast.com which has the hoyas in the top 15.

I don't care so much that we are ranked above or below anyone, but I do like it that voters think we are worthy of being ranked well. In my convoluted mind, there's a difference between those two, but don't ask me to explain. That said, I also like the underdog role going into the conference season. In some ways I would prefer that we have an opportunity to overachieve compared to expectations rather than that we have little room to go anywhere but down.

I would think that the fact we are highly ranked on KenPom now despite having last season's ranking's factored in would actually mean that we are being underrated by KenPom. The way we played after Chris got hurt wrecked our KenPom ratings.
