Being ranked behind Alabama, Memphis, Michigan, and Mississippi State (one loss was to Akron!) was unexpected. Just have to keep winning.

Ranked behind Memphis is absolutely outrageous. They are 4-2. They lost to us. They have zero quality wins. Their best win was a double overtime victory over unranked Tennessee. Their 3 other wins were against Austin Peay, Jackson State and Belmont.

We should be ahead of memphis but that's the only issue I have.

This is good - the higher we are ranked the better for us. You remember last year? and the year before? and the year before?

18th in the AP that's more like it.

18th in the AP that's more like it. Why is that good - have we not learned anything in the past 2-3 years?

Is your argument that performance is causal to performance, not just correlated?

This is good - the higher we are ranked the better for us. You remember last year? and the year before? and the year before? Rankings have no effect on the result of games. Do you really think how a group of college coaches ranks us will influence the team's performance against American and Howard? Do you really think what hobbled our team last year was its lofty ranking as opposed to Chris Wright's injury? Rankings matter in so much as they increase visibility and confirm the general strength of a program. If that increased visibility helps on the recruiting trail, then they are a bonus.

Despite being a pessimist, I actually like the fact that we are moving up in the ranks. In the past few years, we have started ranked in the top 20 and didn't have to "earn" it. This lead to complacency and then a slide in the rankings and a jab to our morale.
This year, we started out as a nobody and through hard work, the guys are reaping the benefits by being awarded a higher ranking. They actually earned it and it is great that they can see the rewards of working their a$$es off.
Soooooooo being ranked in this part of the season is waaaayyyy different than being ranked in the past few years. Just my 2 cents.

The last few seasons may have ended in disappointment, but to say that those teams didn't earn the high rankings they received simply isn't true. We consistently played some of the most difficult schedules and had more quality wins than just about anyone. Those teams were very appropriately ranked.

Can't hurt for recruiting either.

We were a three seed just two years ago. One bad game in the NCAA does not a bad season make.

I'm surprised that we broke into the rankings this strongly (not that it isn't deserved). I honestly wouldn't have been surprised to have been the first "others receiving votes."

I have no problems with rankings - just prefer to be ranked at the end ie Is it Feb yet? Several intangibles - makes us a big fat target and also some of the players (especially the younger ones) may get to believe it - perhaps more than they should. I like high rankings in KenPom early.

For anyone that's curious how people voted. Highest ranking of us was 12...and several had us unranked. 12 seems a bit high to me, but unranked....seriously?!? www.pollspeak.com/component/option,com_psreport/Itemid,3/lang,en/p,40/p_1,40/r,T/r_1,T/s,18/s_1,18/t1,121/t1_1,121/v,/v_1,/w,5/w_1,5/

To be honest, I think the Coaches (and probably some AP voters) are reluctant to rank Georgetown high at this point because there is a sense (whether right or wrong) that the Hoyas play better in the non-conference against teams that are unfamiliar with our offense. I think that's fair.
With that said, if we handle business against Howard, American, Memphis and Louisville - I think Georgetown will be right on the edge of the Top 10, or better, going into the new year.

Went from unranked in week 4 to 19 in week 5.

Just look at where the voters that didn't rank us have both Memphis and Alabama. Most ridiculous is Mark McCarter of the Hunstville Alabama paper. Um, Mr. McCarter...I know you of all people saw Georgetown beat the team you have ranked #16, so maybe you should give them a freaking bone? Another voter has Alabama at #9, Memphis at #17, and us unranked. Seriously, these things are a joke.
