Didn't know this was a name Nate was into......as far as I knew, the ORIGINAL Vanilla Gorilla was Brad Lohaus.

By and large, it's been a rough season for nate so far this season. We have a few lower pressure games coming up where hopefully Nate can build some confidence and work out some kinks.

Ok, I have to say this. This board is unbelievable when it comes to Nate. I'm not sure who said it in the main thread, but he is this year's whipping boy. We spend half the year bitching and whining about playing small last year, about Hollis playing at the 4, and about how we are getting whupped on the boards. Yet now its' all Nate has to sit. We spend all year complaining about how III doesn't play the kids enough, but now we want to sit a guy 7 games into his sophomore year because he's struggling. Yes he's struggling. Everyone can see that, I'm sure Nate knows that. But why must we sit him rather than let him play through his struggles? If we sat every young player that made mistakes or struggled at points, we'd have played Jeff, Greg, and Otto as freshmen and no one else. I think III is doing a great job of sitting him at important points in the game while still getting him minutes. This may shock half of you, but we're going to need Nate throughout the season. Do you really want Otto checking Drummond or Olander when UConn goes big? Do you want Otto checking Rakeem Christmas against Cuse? Giving Otto Nate's minutes works great against Bama and Memphis who have 1 big man, but won't work against a ton of teams. We can't give Nate 7 minutes of game time and then turn around and ask him to contribute in BE play.
You guys need to chill the eff out, and let him play. He's going to make mistakes, but he's going to do some good stuff out there like he did today. Yes he got tagged with early fouls (some of which were borderline), and yes he made an awful turnover. Guess what, so did Henry the play after when he tried to whip that wrap around pass to Nate. And guess what else, Nate actually made a few plays there. So next time you think, let's sit Nate, think about how you'd feel about a 6 man rotation.

I don't think he's this years whipping boy - but he has played pretty poorly this season. That's just a fact. I have confidence he'll turn it around and end up making big contributions at some point. But Otto has rightfully passed him on playing time even if he continues to start. Nate started at least three fast breaks for bama tonight by either fumbling a pass or doing that crazy thing where he bats the rebound like its a piñata.

I would have thought he would be one of my favorite players going in to this season. But right now, he's just thinking too much. He needs to get out of his own head and to just play ball.

Nate was taken out of this game by his third foul, which was the stupidest call ever, almost made it sound like Greg Monroe was cursing the ref. give the kid a break, he is fine and remains a major part of the TEAM

And he's so much better than Benimon. That comparison was ridiculous.

I'm not disputing that Nate has played poorly or that Otto has outplayed him so far. It's just that people make it seem like it's a zero sum game such that Otto should play every possible minute and Nate none. Even if Otto is better, Otto after 8 minutes of run might not be as good as a fresh Nate. Otto against bigger teams might not be as good as Nate. We need both, so both need to play. You can't ask Nate to play 8 minutes a game against Memphis, Bama, Kansas but then step in and play 30 at UConn and at Cuse. Otto is currently playing the 3rd most minutes on the team, behind Jason and Hollis. But yes, we need to sit Nate more?

I agree with some of your points chep, but putting Henry and Nate on a level playing field is strong. Henry is absolutely crucial to the flow of the offense. Nate makes the offense a bit stagnant. Nate has really struggled, and when it shifts the momentum away from us, yeah, people will want him out. We need to take every game one at a time. If a player is giving momentum to the other team, he needs to sit. Nobody's saying lock him away and never show him the court again.
Also, yeah I could live with Otto on Christmas. He's 6'9 225, and quite frankly, nothing to be impressed by yet.

No sir, they're not saying "BOOO", they saying "LOOOOBICK"
Seriously though, the kid needs a slumpbuster. Even his harshest critics on the board know that he is MUCH better than he has been playing. Let's just hope that the next over the next few weeks he gets his mojo back against the annual winter finals parade of cupcakes.
Get well soon, Nate.

He's 6'9 225, and quite frankly, nothing to be impressed by yet. I'm sure my post reads a little more like it's creating a straw man than I meant it to. There are three things that primarily motivated my original post: 1. The number of posts that compared not to Benimon. Really? 2. The apparent microanalysis of every possession/mistake that he made. Yes he made them. But no one called out Markel's turnovers or his missed shot. In fact, Nate got blamed for his tip out that led to a fastbreak, when the real genesis of it was a bad shot by Markel in transition. 3. The sense that this board finds someone every year to do this with. Check early season posts on Chris and compare them to midseason posts. Check midseason posts on Austin and compare them to late season posts. Yes, sports fandom is a roller coaster, but guys at Georgetown don't slump--they're all bad players who are too slow/short/soft to play when they're struggling. Nate was everyone's boy last year. 4 bad games later, he is Benimon.

I did not find Nate to be THAT bad tonight. He wasn't that bad. His errors were just so glaring and led to people dunking on our heads

He played 14 minutes tonight. Sounds about right. Exactly. For 15 minutes a game, he's a solid part of the rotation. Nate does a lot of good things. He hustles, he works hard on D, he rebounds aggressively, he goes after loose balls, and he's a tall, strong dude who generally plays within himself. The problem is when you try to give him 23-28 minutes a game. Then his offensive deficiencies become glaring. Nobody guards him out on the perimeter, which makes many of our sets bog down. He hesitates for an almost cartoonish length of time when he gets the ball in the post, likely because he's unsure what to do with it. I strongly believe that Nate is going to develop into a really good player for this team, but right now, he should be Otto and Henry's back-up. And there's nothing wrong with that, those two guys are playing great ball.

Lubick is struggling so far, for sure. Any other year he might be losing his spot to Porter, sure. Right now, though, freshmen aren't expecting to start, so I'm fine with Nate continuing to start. He's shown enough potential to get some space to weather these kinks.
That said, his nickname is "Thundersnow". NO ONE DENIES THIS!

Everytime the paper runs a feature on a player before a game, you can put it in the bank that it will be a jinx. IMO this is very true. Just a jinx - next time the Vanilla Gorilla continues to improve.

The 3 early questionable fouls hurt his minutes. I did like that pull up 10 footer that he nailed from the baseline. Nate is extremely valuable to this team. His offense will come.
