I think that from JTIII's reaction it was pretty clear that he or someone else had told them exactly how much time was left on the shot clock. I think that from III's reaction it was pretty clear that he thought someone SHOULD have told them; doesn't mean it happened. Put me down as feeling like this happens way too often with III's teams. I don't think it's the head coaches direct responsibility, but making sure the assistants are telling the players is his responsibility. It was quite clear from that play that it wasn't just Henry that didn't know--none of the players did. There's really not an excuse for it. My only real knock on III is that I really have no idea what he says in time outs; it never seems like we have a good play drawn up, much less doing the simple stuff like making sure our players know how much time is on the shot/game clock. I have absolutely no doubt from watching it 3 more times on DVR that III or one of the assistants told the players, but the play we had called got jammed up and we broke down.

I cant ever believe one of the 7 coaches we have on our bench dont remind the players of the shot clock. I am positive they told them. It doesnt mean the players dont have a brainfart.

I am so glad I have a DVR now. Even with the late start time, I was still going to miss much of the game "live." But one thing I'm not happy about, was getting back and finding out that one of my kids had set the DVR to record an episode of "The Office" and the conflict was "resolved" ... and by resolved, I mean skipping the first part of the game. I think the score was 21-16 when my recording started. I'd be really pi$$ed off if Bama had won the game. But since it was an exciting victory for the Hoyas, I'll give her a free pass on this one. BUt it damn sure better not happen again. I have to admit, I was a tad worried when Bama was getting all the calls and then finally hit the free throws to take the lead. Regardless, that home winning streak is no more! What about Sims reverse pivot baseline for the reverse jam! Was that sweet or what? And dammit, he almost added another one that looked like an instant replay several minutes later ... Clark with big play down the stretch and of course, Thompson hitting the huge shot ... damn, I haven't had that much fun watching a basketball game in a long, long time!

At the half, I turned to my friend and said that we needed to score 35 more points (putting us at 58) to win the game. Not surprised that it nearly turned out that way -- Alabama has some great players and they have an obviously-large home-court advantage, even if their fan base will always be more interested in football.
Love the zone with the flexibility to go to man. Pops had plenty of zone in his schemes, switching to man when we needed to up the pressure or if we simply had far superior athletes. I view SUcks's improvement in zone over time as having been helped by exposure to ours, but that was a long time ago. I don't mind at all seeing our using it when we have the length to disrupt the threes as long as we don't lose players on the baseline or when boxing out -- that's going to require more discipline from us as the season wears on, but I think I've already seen some adjustments. Really happy to see III being vocal, as well, both to our team and to the refs.
Nate's obviously going to have to practice not getting flustered on offense. It looks like he's trying to make the next play so as NOT to turn the ball over (by getting stripped, having to put it on the ground, etc.), but that, in doing so, he's turning his attention away from the ball before he has it in his hands -- and he doesn't have the kind of mitts that would allow him to grab it without concentrating. I'd like to say that his teammates need to be aware of their receiver when passing and make sharper/softer passes accordingly, but I don't think it's appropriate to expect that all the time; Nate simply has to be better at this level. That said, I think he's contributing at a level WAY above Benimon, et. al., and that his defensive post presence allows us enormous flexibility as a second option to Henry (wow, has that kid stepped up!).
I do wish Henry had taken it a bit more to Green when he came back with 4 fouls. While he abused the kid who defended him when Green was out, his attacks when Green was in ended up being glancing, rather than direct. I'd have been OK with seeing him risk at least one charge, given the situation. I don't really blame him for missing the reverse. The move was sweet, and it had worked shortly before. This time, though, he must have been a foot farther out to start -- when he got to the point where he had to go up, he was just a bit too far for an easy jam, and, having taken off without a furious leap, he really had to go for the layup instead. It would have been easier to move toward the front of the hoop for the jam than for the reverse, but a player usually has the whole move through the shot/jam in his head at the outset of the spin, and it's hard to correct mid-stream (Jordan, DWade, Kobe and a few others excepted). Going straight up would also have allowed the slam, but might have allowed the defender to stuff him from behind (he can't know at that point whether or not the defender he has left behind is in a position to do so).
Loved the intensity, but, as I posted in another thread, I really think that the premature celebration at the time-out whistle after Jason's 3 to go up 7 set us up in just the right frame of mind for Alabama to make a comeback. Sure, we went up 9 afterwards, but that was from a Thompson rebound and put-back off of a Clark miss, and we flagged. The look I'd rather see from our senior leader after such a big shot is one of smoldering, don't-even-think-about-touching-me-at-this-point, get-'er-done determination. Hard, I know, but how many times have we seen that kind of reaction mark the beginning of a big turnaround for the other team? Austin @ Cuse two years ago, Scotty Reynolds in almost every game he played, our whole team after Jahidi's hoop-and-the-harm to go up 11...
All that said, I'm fantastically happy with the exciting performance, the obvious camaraderie/dedication and the WIN!!!

thank you Grok. I don't think that many fans out there realize that Pops did play a lot of zone, especially during the Ewing years. A very agressive zone with traps all over the court.
The 1980 team played proabably more man than any strong team that he had, even though they did play quite a bit against Carolina in NO.
IIIs final four team was primarily a zone team but excelled at playing the matchup once the figured it out in mid january.

That was Hollis and the other guards fault. They had no idea about the shot clock. You can't really blame Sims because they threw the pass into him in the low post with like 2 seconds left with a man right behind him. Only an Abdul Jabber sky hook would be able to score in that position.

I did not get the game recorded. I thought I had set the DVR to record it, but I didnt. Anyone know when the game is set to reair? I checked espn, but nothing. Maybe MASN at 2am? Game should be an instant classic.

dynasty, I don't know that it'll be on TV again, but if you have access to ESPN3.com, I think you can watch a replay there. It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

ESPNU is your best bet for re-air, but I'm not seeing anything in upcoming programming. Send me a PM if you don't have ESPN3.

Liked this from the Rivals National College Basketball forum:
NelsonMuntz UConnReport.com Post #8990 MyFanPage Add Buddy Ignore Re: Word is Georgetown at Alabama is a sellout, hope our freshmen are ready!! Reply JTIII is one of the 5 top X's and O's coaches in basketball. His offense could literally be a clinic. Georgetown's backdoor cuts and big man passing as as good as any team in basketball.
Never thought I'd see an opposing fan give such high praise to JT3.
