Thing I find most remarkable about Otto is that there is nothing remotely flashy about anything he does. He's like the guy you wouldn't even notice on most individual plays, and then you realize wow that was about the third clutch board he grabbed in four possessions, or how did he happen to be in position for that tip-in?
He really "gets" the basketball fundamentals.

A 14 rebound effort is remarkable from a freshman--the last time it happened was Roy Hibbert (2005) and before him Victor Samnick (2000), but both were starters.
Not close to the record from a first-year player though--Charlie Adrion went for 30 and 29 against GW in 1968. (Lic can tell us about that one.)

Just found more info from your excellent HISTORY site. Merlin Wilson At the midway point of his freshman season, Wilson was averaging 12 points and 13 rebounds a game, a figure largely unprecedented in Georgetown's recent memory. Second to Mike Stokes in scoring, Wilson ranked in the top ten in rebounds in the nation, leading one Tampa Tribune columnist to write that under Wilson, Georgetown was "a team destined to be one of the next great powers in college basketball."
In an early January game at Loyola, Wilson picked up 24 rebounds, as the Hoyas outrebounded the Greyhounds 65-33, and three weeks later torpedoed Navy with a 25 point, 18 rebound, eight block effort. A 17 point, 17 rebound effort helped lead Georgetown to a big win over at Fordham in February, followed by 15 and 16 versus St. Mary's at season's end. Though the 1972-73 Hoyas were a decided work in progress, Wilson finisihed the season as the team leader in scoring and rebounding, with a rebound average (14.1 per game) that placed him 14th in the nation in the category.
www.hoyabasketball.com/features/top100/m_wilson.htm None of that is to take away anything from the terrific game Porter played tonight, ON THE ROAD and against the #4 team in the country... off the bench as you mentioned. Wilson is one of my all time favorite Hoyas -- first GREAT player of the Thompson era. Talking about Porter and Wilson in the same sentence is really saying something. Porter's poise, knowledge, nose-for-the-ball, anticipation, understanding, positioning... all of it... is just GREAT! In addition to his talent, size and attitude. What an outstanding guy to have leading our team. He's like a Jeff Green. Makes game-winning plays.

Not sure exactly what this means, but I felt so much more confident when he was at the line than when Jason was. And Jason is pretty damn good on the line. Otto is the man.

Great game by Otto!! Two quick thoughts:
1. Otto's nose for the ball reminds me of Perry McDonald, who as a junior and senior averaged about six rebounds per game. Of course, Otto has four inches on McDonald and is still a only freshman.
2. For the past few seasons, I always thought that Jason Clark was the contemporary Hoya whom I could most easily imagine playing on a JT, Jr. team, but Otto and Jabril might be even more old-school than JC!!

He outplayed McDonalds All American freshman Chane Benahan (a more atheltic Benimon who plays like a less athletic Charles Barkley). Destroyed that matchup.

He has poise and good court presence, better than what some of the Louisvillle upperclassmen showed in the last two minutes.
Can't think of too many hoops players named Otto. Many years ago there was a big guy on the Pistons named Otto Mueller -- wore a crewcut and airboarded his free throws (hit the backboard and nothing else).

Seems our old friend Awesome Austin Freeman is as impressed with Porter as we are. See his tweet below: _SugarFree5 Austin Freeman:
Otto has taken my name...Otto Porter i now dub u as AWESOME!!! LOL Otto Porter is gonna b Georgetown before he leaves....great player
So maybe instead of "Bubba", we should be calling him AWESOME OTTO!

JTIII needs to be careful with Otto going forward. We all love him now 12 games into the basketball season, but I am concerned about playing him 30+ minutes for the entire season. The freshman wall is a very real thing and we will need Otto down the road...another reason why Lubick maintaining minutes is very important.

EVEN AUSTIN AND CHRIS WERE TWEETING AT 3AM IN EUROPE ABOUT OTTO--MATIC. HES JUST A GREAT BASKETBALL PLAYER AS THOMPSON HAS SAID VERY EARLY LIKE STARTING THIS SUMMER otto will be one our gu stars.. the critical play may have been when he got the pass broke the press and we finally scored to break our drought caused by our sloppy play and villes great hustle d.. that and the tip in on roys missed shots WINNING BBALL PLAYS plus like 13 or 14 critical rebbies ALL AROUND HUSTLE AND GAME NOSE FOR THE BALL WHAT A GREAT RECRUIT. Bump for a workmanlike game vs Providence. Otto has been a run killer with offensive putbacks. Its such a cliche, but he has a great nose for the ball... the rest will come.

Freshman wall does not affect rebounding...scoring maybe.

He's so good on the boards people in 118 were jokingly upset every time he didn't get the board. You just expect him to get every rebound. Whenever someone comes flying out of no where to grab a rebound it's Otto. I think everyone has a man crush on him at this point.
