There will be a huge temptation to participate in schadenfreude-related talk. Instead, let's realize that, if true, this is much more a tragedy for the individual(s) involved than anything else, and, respecting that, keep any commentary limited and civil.

I went to school with this guy's son (who was a ball boy himself for many years) and he is pretty well respected in the community. As much as I hate Syracuse, I really hope these rumors aren't true.

I would agree with this, except for one thing - IT'S SYRACUSE! Seriously though, this is just piling sadness upon sadness. I wish it weren't happening (which is not to be confused with I wish it weren't being exposed - the more exposure the better if it can in any way benefit the victims).

Classy program they're running over there. Glad this won't be the Big East's problem, and I feel terrible for the kids.

"Davis said that Fine molested him at Fine's home, at the basketball facilities at Syracuse, on recruiting road trips and even at the 1987 Final Four. Davis said he was Fine's constant companion at all those places. He said that Boeheim would come into Fine's room, and see Davis lying on the Fine's bed, but never asked him any questions." He said that Boeheim knew he was traveling on the road and sleeping in Fine's room. "Boeheim saw me with Bernie all the time in the hotel rooms, on road trips," Davis said. "He'd come in, and see me laying in the bed, kind of glance at me like, 'What are you doing here?'" But he wouldn't say that. He'd just scowl. And I would look at him like, I'd be nervous. I felt embarrassed 'cause I felt stupid that I'm there. I'm not supposed to be here. I know it, and Boeheim's not stupid."

Story is starting to get really bad.
"Davis said he reported the abuse to Syracuse police in 2003, but that a detective told him that the statute of limitations had run out. Davis said the detective told him that if he knew of boys being molested by Fine at the time, that Syracuse police would investigate those allegations. Davis said he told the detective that he thought other boys were being molested but that he had only direct knowledge of Fine molesting him.
At the time, the Syracuse police chief was Dennis Duval, a former Syracuse basketball player. Duval, who retired in 2004, could not be reached for comment. He played at Syracuse from 1971 to 1974, and started with the Syracuse Police Department in 1978. Boeheim became the head coach at Syracuse in 1976, but began as a graduate assistant in 1969."

If you watch the video on the ESPN link above, it sure sounds like ESPN thinks there's something to this story and is going to put some resources into an investigation.

To be fair, Syracuse did an investigation in 2005 and turned up nothing. However, now apparently someone else is coming forward which is why I'm guessing there is an investigation now.

If you're doing a story about allegations that Bernie Fine molested young boys, maybe you don't run a picture of Bernie with his hands on a player. www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/11/assistant_syracuse_university.html

if ESPN runs true to form, Boeheim'will never get the opportunity to coach a game in the ACC.

Comment on Syracuse.com: "I'm sorry to see this - believe it or not, there had been whispers over the years. There is a reason Bernie never got a head coaching job. I'm sorry how this will play out."

""I would go on recruiting trips with him, stay in hotels with him," Davis told ESPN in 2003. "I stayed in many hotels with him. At the (1987) Final Four. I would get there a day earlier than Laurie (Fine's wife) and the kids sometimes and we'd spend the night all alone in a hotel room many times."
He said that Boeheim knew he was traveling on the road and sleeping in Fine's room.

I am not sure whether I buy this story yet. It had more of a "Fred Brown" ring to it - maybe a bitter guy who had a falling out apart from whatever is thrown out in the press or harbored private bitterness. That being said, these kinds of allegations are serious and should be investigated seriously, and the Boeheim reaction (even if nothing happened between Fine and the complainant) is simply inadequate. These are also the kinds of allegations that may help others (if there are others) to speak out, which may say more than this story does for me.

Shocking and sad. I'm glad that the victims now feel the courage to speak up and hope that the accused can't shield themselves behind the statute of limitations. whether boeheim new of what was happening or not....a good argument can be made that he "should have known" given the circumstances.
this story is going to blow up.

Sickening stuff if true. Can't believe Ashton getting divorced.
But seriously.. I hope stories like this coming out will stop cover-ups and allow victims to come forward freely.
