Have you guys ever seen Will Rhoden on The Sports Reporters? My wife and I always get excited when he is on to see what he will babble. The guy literally can't complete a sentence or a thought and doesn't know anything about actual sports- only about nebulous concepts that are difficult to disprove with facts such as "legacies" and "rings.". I'm calling ghost writer. I swear anytime anyone starts talking about championship rings it is a tip off that they don't actually know anything about X's and O's sports and they are killing time. Is it just me, or does the Times have the worst sports columnists?

It's not just you. Worst sports section of any major newspaper. It probably hasn't even occurred to the sports editor to thrust the Forde Yahoo story in Thamel's face and ask "How did you get scooped on this?"

It probably hasn't even occurred to the sports editor to thrust the Forde Yahoo story in Thamel's face and ask "How did you get scooped on this?" It's not just that the sports section is bad, almost intentionally so, but honestly in Rhoden's case when you watch him try to speak up on the Sports Reporters, you would be forgiven for thinking the guy isn't fully literate. I mean literally "literate" not just "sports literate." He doesn't speak in sentences, nevermind paragraphs. It is just half thoughts followed by pivots to new half thoughts until he runs out of steam. It actually makes for fun viewing. I'd feel bad but the guy is a journalist at the most prestigious friggen newspaper in the world. How on earth did they hire him? I understand when they hire an anti-white-male bigot like Selena Roberts that it sort of fits with the newspaper's ethos. They can expect her to for example smear wealthy duke lacrosse players AFTER they have been cleared of all crimes where as the normal journalists only did so before they were cleared- the NYT expects you to go the extra mile when snearing at a largely-white preppy sport. But at least she can speak English. Rhoden....not so much.

Grantland: The Sad State of the Big East by Charles P. Pierce - www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7675694/watching-demise-once-mighty-basketball-super-conferenceAll weekend, there was about the tournament the slightly musty smell of encroaching obsolescence. There was a time, and not so long ago, when the Big East was a spotlit thing, playing its tournament in New York, its original membership constructed from schools with long basketball traditions and large eastern media markets. It made stars, like Pearl Washington at Syracuse, and it made people like Patrick Ewing who already were stars into superstars. This year, its championship game was a contest between two teams from the Ohio River basin.
And the game itself was a rock fight. Cincinnati scored 14 points in the first half and, while Madison Square Garden was properly filled, the whole atmosphere felt like someone had lifted a Midwest state high school championship game and dropped it into an NBA arena. It was a stone dropped down a deep well.Pierce sucks. He's an angry, bitter old man whose writing rarely consists of anything but cheap insults and complaints. He writes exactly like the kind of person who titles their book "Idiot America".

If Charles S. Pierce knew one of his progeny was slogging with Simmons, he'd be rolling over in his grave.

I've long since given up on any relevance from the NYTimes sports section, which is composed of well paid but otherwise irrelevant reporters that must play to a readership that is perceived as effete, somewhat irreligious, and largely disconnected from the world of sports. including the older audience who thinks "Roll Tide" refers to something going on at the beach, or who still think they have Friday night boxing at the Garden.
Since sports is so limited in Manhattan circles beyoind the Yankees, the Giants, and an occasional reference to horse racing, the Times' sports page is a myopic lens to a culture most of its readers will never encounter, much less understand, and its content toes the line.

Pierce is a fool, but I'm a bit surprised at his rambling piece (which is nominally about the Big East but then turns out to be a nostalgia trip about Rick Pitino) given that he's a Marquette grad who should have a stake in the future conference.
But get used to this "Syracuse is the Big East" nonsense. Connecticut, Georgetown, St. Johns, Seton Hall, and Villanova are just as much Big East as the Orange, and its going to be quite funny when the conference (in basketball) keeps right on rolling without them.
The only concern is that ESPN will probably go all-in on the ACC, so start telling your friends now about this great new network called the NBC Sports Network, aka Big East TV.

Thought the same- that the pivot from a high level Big East history to a very personal anecdote in the last few paragraphs was jarring and sloppy.

As a Sunday NYT subscriber who enjoyed the Nerlens Noel article, I never realized I was so effete and irreligious. In BE expansion news, Matt Doherty has been fired at SMU: www.statesman.com/news/texas/smu-fires-matt-doherty-after-6-seasons-2234877.html

Off the top of my head there should not be a substantial drop off with the additions of just Temple, Memphis & Houston (great recruiting class). UCF (Jordan's son?) & SMU I'm not really familiar with.

Yeah, UCF and SMU are going to be the new Depaul's.
I really don't mind replacing Pitt and WVU with Temple and Memphis.
Syracuse can die 1000 horrible deaths.

Yeah, UCF and SMU are going to be the new Depaul's. I really don't mind replacing Pitt and WVU with Temple and Memphis. Syracuse can die 1000 horrible deaths. Recall, though, that the first name people used to throw out in that group ("new Depauls") was USF, yet over the last few years they creeped up toward respectability and this year they finished tied for 4th in the league and won a couple of games in the dance. They're certainly not a joke like they were 5 or 6 years ago. I see no reason why UCF and SMU can't follow the same path. None of them really have tradition to build on but all are fairly well funded and in states with good recruiting bases. With the right coach and a few years to build it up, they may not turn into Syracuse but there's no reason they can't be very respectable and in the hunt for a tourney bid every year.

I am excited for UMemphis in Big East. Will get a chance to see Hoyas and others in close proximity to Nashville..... I am sure Memphis fans look forward to return of the Louisville rivary. I would be disappointed if Memphis would not continue the UTenn and Arkansas games. It would be great if Big East divide into north and south divisions with Georgetown, Memphis, Louisville and Fla schools in the south. Go Hoyas!!! Go Bigt East!!!

id.... Memphis and West Tennessee basketball is better than ever. Not only would JTIII compete with Pastner but with Martin (UT) and Anderson (Ark).
