1. Syracuse - The only Big East team I can't root for when they're in a non-conference game. 2. Villanova - history, proximity, recruting base 3. Connecticut - my second most-hated but hatred alone does not a rivalry make. My third hated would West Virginia, but I don't consider them rivals so much as a bunch of a-holes 4. Pittsburgh - like gutuna says, a respected rival 5. Notre Dame - for all the overtimes 6. Maryland - proof that you don't have to play your rival to be one 7. Boston College - a personal one for me as my whole family went there and my dad has been their timekeeper for the last 46 years. So yes, I definitely want our program to (continue to) outshine theirs. Also nuts to them for leaving the conference.

When they got knocked out (I forget by whom), the entire arena did the "Na Na Na / Na Na Na / Hey Hey Hey / Goodbye" song. Glorious.

1. Cuse 2. MD
Nova/UCONN somewhere tied below them but everyone else I don't particularly care about. Everyone hates Duke but we do have a chance at a great rivalry with them due to our students being very similar (except we aren't as big of tools).

I've been mulling over how to sort my rankings, primarily because, to a certain extent, I mentally & emotionally separate on-court rivalry (in the strict sense) from off-court dislike of players/fans/coaches/programs, so this is more my list of feelings about teams rather than a cogent rivalry analysis. But here goes anyway: BIG EASTNumber 1. Syracuse - always and forever. Goes well beyond basketball. Tier 2. Nova, UConn, Pitt, WVU, ND - combination of on-court battles, off-court fan & coach & player loathing, recent & older history, big games, struggles for supremacy, mutual respect for success. I love beating these schools and hate losing to them. There's some bad blood here, but not on the level of the Orange. Tier 3. SJU, L'ville, Marq - history, toughness of play at their arenas, tradition of their programs, ok fans (some whiners in the MQ side, entitlement on the 'ville side), big recent games. I hate losing to them, but sometimes it doesn't hurt so bad. Tier 4. Hall, Providence, South Florida, Cinci, Rutgers - I'm usually madder at the Hoyas for losing these games than at the opponents. I know we've been playing some of them for like 90-100 years, but rivalries only work if they're relevant recently. It's hard to have "rivalry" feelings with the conference's recent perennial bottom feeders, even if we occasionally lose to them. These games are often of the trap or let-down variety. Fans are usually annoying at worst. I honestly don't even know who most of their coaches are except on gameday. Number 16. DePaul - Poor DePaul. Non-ConferenceNumber 1. Maryland - the Syracuse of the Mid-Atlantic. Also goes beyond basketball; our students, alums, and fans simply don't like each other. Tier 2. Ohio, Ohio State, Davidson, Florida - I always hope they lose. Always. For patently obvious reasons. Tier 3. Duke, GW, Vandy, Memphis, ODU, Temple - for differing reasons. The Duke game is always big; it always has national implications; the series is tied at 7-7; 1/21/06. GW is the closest school to GU, and the whole WG thing in 2007 made me forever dislike them and their whiny fans. Vandy, Temple, and Memphis are always solid OOC opponents, and the games we've played with them have been meaningful. ODU has been our best OOC rival in the past few years, with the road team winning all 4 times for a 2-2 split. I tend root for these teams when we've played them that season, and sometimes when we haven't. Except for Duke, of course.

Duke is always a big game, and I think ODU is definitely an OOC rival, no question.
I wouldn't dignify WG with that designation at all. Believe me, we're on their minds a lot more than they're ever on ours. (This would not be difficult to achieve, since they are never on our minds).
However, "Maryland: The Syracuse of the Mid-Atlantic" really needs to be a t-shirt.
Well done. ;D
