I posted this in the game thread but thought it warranted its own thread...
Attention Students!! what the gives this year??
Y'all only got loud when it gets really close in games. The cheers aren't coordinated...and generally start late. It's been SHOCKING to me.
On my side cheers had to be started from the young alum section since noone knew what to do...they don't even STAY loud for an extended period (again, besides at the end when it's close.)
Where is hoya blue this year??? It hasn't been just this game by any means all season the turnout/loudness of the students has been disappointing. Verizon really used to ROCK for big games especially
Is it really so hard to get up for a big top 25 matchup??

Agreed. The young alum sections on the sides really drive the cheers. Unfortunately, the students in the permanent seats (meaning, those who don't get there early) look bored.

For what it's worth, I saw the game on TV and thought the crowd was fantastic.

For what it's worth, I saw the game on TV and thought the crowd was fantastic. it's hard to see if you're not at the game...honestly the cheers are driven by the young alums at this point....they get it going eventually yes but definitely need prodding which is just ridiculous

Definitely a smaller student turnout than I'd expected, as well as a somewhat smaller overall crowd. I wonder if it was weather fears?
Anyway, I didn't think the students who were there were too sedate, at least in the main sections. I also think our non-student fans have gotten a lot more involved than in past years, and I'm hardly an apologist for them; I wrote constant rants about the fans a few seasons ago.

I thought it was a good showing from the fans down the stretch. I was in 120 and the whole section seemed to be on its feet for the last 5 minutes.

Question...is Eric Cusimano still around as the male cheerleader? Because that guy cheered his heart out, always looked like he had a half dozen red bulls before every game, and more importantly, he had the megaphone to start cheers. I'd rather have one too many "We Are Georgetown" or "Hoya Saxa" chants than not enough.

He is not but there are two other male cheerleaders who I thought were doing a pretty good job leading cheers.
But the students weren't responding. Verizon was super quiet during the first half. And some kid was wearing an orange hat in the front row, but thats a whole other issue.

^ this is the whole point....the cheerleaders would try and start cheers but noone would respond. It's like they don't know when or what to cheer. Once the young alums started thennn everyone would start. The first half was very quiet so was most of the second until it got too close. The point is they are slow to start and not coordinated not that they EVENTUALLY do it. Any other young alums care to chime in with this? I can only speak for my side in sec 118 but I know others around me felt the same way.

One of the Hoya Blue members said in their forum area that they had not been controlling this years cheer sheets...now if that means there are no cheer sheets anymore, then that could be a problem

I don't think the students need cheer sheets to know how to chant "Lets go Hoyas" and "Defense" throughout the game

I don't think the students need cheer sheets to know how to chant "Lets go Hoyas" and "Defense" throughout the game Thats true but it was just another thing to get their heads in the game...at a place were non-passionate student fans are VERY apathetic My question is more of: is Hoya Blue still doing cheer sheets, because if not, what are they doing at the bball games this year? (although other sports' support has been great)

Just a thought, but has HB ever tried to organize a student gray out in the lower bowl? Do we think there would be any support from the donors who comprise those tickets to donate them back for a random game (say, the first home game after break assuming it's not an uber-important game)? The gist would be those who didn't donate presumably are the YA sections who are generally awesome anyway, and the others keeping tickets would be similarly pumped. The donated seats would then be filled with students. Doing it at the start of the season might energize the students for the rest of the season to do some more coordinated cheering, etc. And really, I think the donors would be willing to be on board for a game.

A couple of points...
1. It is very difficult for a student section to sustain energy throughout the game, much less to fill the arena with noise. There needs to be more out of the wine/cheese crowd and more casual fans in the lower bowl, many of whom only stand to close out each half.
2. The problem at least 2-3 years ago in the student sections was that you could not get anything out of the crowd beyond 20-25 rows from the floor. In 2005-2006, we had yell leaders with megaphones at most (maybe every game), and they would coordinate with the die hards at floor level and at least try to synch things up. As a result, you'd get unified student sections and more noise from the top. I was a yell leader during the Duke game in 2006, and it was a great experience even if I was up in the bleeds, relatively speaking.
3. Still, we seem to be turning out 1/3-1/2 of the student body, which is a lot more than you can say for other schools. Went to a UT hoops game this weekend, and there weren't even 500 students there. No energy at all either.

Hoya Blue still does cheer sheets.
They need to bring back yell leaders. (Have they lost all the mega phones or were we not allowed to use them anymore I think I remember towards the end of my time there that the ncaa had a problem with non cheerleaders having megaphones)
I know it's really hard to get yell leaders because no one wants to sit far back in the student section when you can sit in the front. I know i didn't want to when I was there. I still did it a couple times though. Put in a incentive there should be enough people that each person only has to do it for 1 game.
We really miss Eric. These male cheerleaders are a little timid. I know they're trying to sync up cheers with the other side, but you can't be waiting 10 seconds into a possession to start cheering. Defensive cheers need to be started by the side we're playing defense on and the Offensive cheers need to be started by the side we play offense on. That way we always know who's supposed to be starting the cheers.
I think Hoya Blue needs to lay out all these rules at midnight madness when they're revealing the shirt. Instruct everyone how to cheer. Tell them how to do the free throw defense, tell them to clap 2X after a made free throw.
Cheer sheets are great, but I always got the feeling no one ever read them.

a 1 and 4 start doesn't help bring out the marginal fans. Now with 5 BE wins in a row, we should get better turnouts. There were a lot of empty seats between the baskets last night. It was predicted to be a close game and it was, even though it started out UGLY. The Georgetown regular fan base seems to around 12000. if it were CUSE or UCONN last night it would have been a sell out.

Used to read everyone of them and I loved them...even if I did know the cheers. My less committed friends enjoyed them too since it gave them a glimpse into some random stats about both teams. Good point about the yell leaders, more often then not cheering actually just becomes a jumble of noise because the back gets lost from the front. Yell leaders would help solve not only this problem but also the general energy level. Thats the kind of person Eric C was on and off the court. Alway high level of energy (although you should have seen him when the Saints won the SB, scary). Maybe the cheerleading squad could hire him as an advisor . MM is the perfect time for everyone to learn the cheers and some of the nuances like the FT "clap-clap" and the "you-you-you-allllllll-you" but "D-Fense" and "We Are Georgetown" aren't that hard. Yell leaders would probably be the most beneficial. PS Hoya Blue should have the front row of 1 side of 1 student section, I understand being in the front row (trust me, it was always a fight getting ppl to cheer in the back, thx HSB) but they would be better off sitting with some of their less passionate Hoya fans. Other then that, their members should be spread out...personally, I really liked the games where the back was a little quiet but I could just stand up and yell away.
