Ah Lenore Rubino - I'm happy to hear that her charm and intellect were not lost in the translation to the radio medium. No word on whether she ever plans to disclose her direct financial interest in limiting/eliminating student-rented and University-owned properties in the neighborhood. Who wants to bet that Washington Fine Properties has contributed a significant part of the CAG and BCA's war chests When it comes to Letting Slip the Dogs of Crazy, however, no one can match everyone's favorite shutterbug extraordinaire, Stephen R. Brown, who has started not one but TWO new blogs: How does Burleith resident Stephen R. Brown follow up his instant hit of a blog “Drunken Georgetown Students“? By calling for the removal of Georgetown President Jack DeGioia and Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans on of course! We need to get this guy a TV show. Dogs of Crazy. Nice. Or as Archer would say, the Hogs of Crazy. Whatever Farm Animals of Crazy

First hearing is tomorrow. It will be all GU -- Georgetown's presentation, followed by responses to questions from the Commission and then from the parties. The DC agencies, ANCs, and parties all asked if they could wait until the second hearing (in May) to present their case, because they wanted more time to review and process the University's latest commitments.
So, tomorrow night.

Every time I see this thread updated, a "oh dear lord, what now" thought runs through my head
That thought is usually justified upon reading the latest updates. This is beyond ridiculous.

FYI all -- the community is going BALLISTIC that students would deign to come to the hearing and participate. They are whining and claiming the students are going to take all of their seats.
Awesome sauce.

Anyone want to give a brief synopsis about/feel for how the meeting went?

yeah tables I'd love to hear how you thought the meeting went. It was hard for me to tell. I thought our presentation was great and that we did a great job there. But the Council started their questioning and they seemed pretty aggressive and negative. Then the cross examination started and that was just a mess with the neighbors. People we're supposed to be quite, but it sounded like the neighbors were very disrespectful and were constantly laughing and snickering and making comments.
I assume when the neighbors present their opposition they will also be questioned by the board? If so I hope the board is as aggressive as they were when questioning us. I also hope Georgetown gets a chance to cross examine their presentation.
It's hard to tell when the whole process is barely a third over if that. But I didn't get the sense things were going well for us. But i was just following the voice coverage. So maybe the tone was different in the room.

I'm hoping that some of the negativity is just the Council putting the University through its paces. I've seen that in other contexts: aggressive questioning for the sake of a thorough proceeding, but not necessarily indicating a preference for either side.

As far as zoning hearings go, this hearing went very well. Glad to hear you all thought the presentation went well (that justifies a lot of long late hours).
The Commission's cross examination was typical. They are usually this tough, if not tougher. They definitely seemed to understand what was going on. The plan itself got praise, particularly from Commissioner Turnbull on its sustainability.
And the neighbors' questions were fast and furious, but the GU team did a very good job of responding. The President and Provost were particularly adept at not just responding but giving the appropriate big picture and context.
Let me also be clear -- it was a BIG DEAL that President DeGioia participated at this level. Most university presents do not do that. And he did an excellent job of explaining GU's position.
I slept well last night.

I think his being there sends a very clear message about how serious GU is about this plan, and I appreciate his decision to be an active participant.

Oh, and HUGE shoutout to all of the students who attended. That was really just amazing. I just hope we can rally them to come May 12 and May 16.

To me it seemed like it went well. If i was a disinterest party (which i am clearly not, but nonetheless...) i would come away thinking the Zoning Comish wants to get to real issues (good), the University was very prepared (great), and the residents want to split hairs, be petty, and try to change the rules to make the university look bad.
The university really impressed me, reading the Vox messages (Vox impressed me to, they have been awesome with this stuff). They presented the facts, and had a counter point (usually based on statistics) to counter all of the residents argument. I have been a vocal detractor of DeGioia in the past, but he really impressed me with this. So great he was there and said "the students have a right to live off campus" which is really the key to me and what hasnt been vocalized enough by the university in the past (at least publicly).
I wanted to bang my head on the table for most of that. It seamed like the residents just wanted to ignore all reason and rational argument. They wanted to make exclamatory statements to make the board suspicious of the University.
To the Boards credit, they came off as fair and thoughtful. even if they dont rule in the universities favor (or whatever they are supposed to be doing) i will feel that the process was at least fail. And that is what is important.
I've got to get to the May 6 meeting. It should be great fun.

Next hearing for GU is on May 12. Followed by May 16, June 2 and June 6.
In th meanwhile, check out the hearing on UDC's campus plan this Monday, May 2. UDC WANTS to build beds and the neighbors are fighting it. Why? Basically, flat out racism. One mother actually said that she would be afraid to walk her children by a dorm with UDC students. Remarkable. The neighbors in a nearby apartment building want to ban UDC students who live in the building from using their pool.
