ESPN: Tom Izzo suspended for one gameQuote:Michigan State officials said late Friday afternoon the school employed someone associated with a potential recruit during a basketball camp in June. The person was paid $475 for five days of working with middle schoolers. Izzo says he regrets what happened and called it an unintentional violation of the rules.Stuff happens.

This sounds like the Moses violation: a drop of water in a large filthy ocean, disciplined only as a symbolic gesture by an NCAA that is impotent when it comes to more egregious offenses.

Yeah strummer, I was thinking the same thing. Ironically, it broke about the same time an LSU release did that they had committed some infractions as well. They too, self-disciplined themselves. I forget all the details, but among their mistakes were over 3000 phone calls from University personnel to recruits that are not allowed, since the personnel were not among the select few who were registered with the NCAA and thus "official" representatives allowed to make such calls. I used to think those people were called "coaches" but maybe I missed something. In any case, I don't think that LSU's voluntary penalties will be deemed satisfactory by the NCAA, but I think you are on the right track here and MSU will come out looking like a veritable Sainthood with this one.

It sounds extremely minor to me too. But it sounds like Michigan State was allowed to choose which game he'd be suspended for, so that's a pretty ridiculous "penalty". I am just SHOCKED that they chose the showdown with Prairie View A&M. How will the team survive without him for that one?!

Once again, the NCAA proves that honesty will not go unpunished. Fess up that you brought a coach onboard for a middle school camp without realizing he's connected with a recruit? Suspension. Pay your players, but hush it up? Nothing.
The NCAA can only punish violations it catches people committing. Fair enough. But unfortunately the NCAA is so impotent that they can only catch the really minor violations that honest coaches admit to. That's why clean programs like Michigan St. and Georgetown get hit with suspensions while the filthy ones like Kentucky and UConn whistle on their way.

I couldn't agree more.
