UCLA had a freshman guard named Matt Carlino. He suffered a concussion in practice last month, and wasn't cleared to practice until just before UCLA's trip to NY to play Nova and VCU. He was held out of those games because he wasn't yet ready to play, and then Ben Howland announced that he also would not play in the game at Kansas, because Howland felt it wasn't fair to throw a freshman who had never played into that situation.
UCLA's game following Kansas was the debacle against Montana, and Carlino again didn't play. He then announced that he was transferring! So for all practical purposes, because the kid didn't play in one game in which he was truly available to play, he's decided to transfer. Howland even said afterward that if he had played Carlino against Montana, the transfer could likely have been avoided.
So is this what things have now come to? I don't play in one game, and I'm going home? Lord save us all.

If I were Howland, I wouldn't even try to convince him to stay. No one needs that headache.

No one needs that headache. No pun intended. Ba-ZING!!!! (what? is concussion humor not OK?) ;D But I agree. Ben Howland, you're better off without him. Maybe not immediately, but over the long term definitely.

It was a blessing for UCLA--kid shouldn't have been recruited there in first place--he's not any good.
Howland needs to get better players--but then LET THEM PLAY--he's done so more this year but it's cost him numerous players that should've been UCLA locks.
