So, I was goaded by my wife and 8 yr old to "break out the tapes" over the weekend and for the first time in 15 years, we watched some of the highlight films from my HS state championship run (fell one game short - but great press coverage and tv interview of me in HS - very funny for my son to see) and more importantly my years at Gtown.
What dawned on me was that over the years of watching us get getting beaten down, I had forgotten that in the '95 season - '96 graduation year we had the #1 ranked defense in the nation for 1-AA, (top 5 each for passing and rushing), 11 all league selections in the MAAC and most of the team that year were 3.5 - 4 year starters.
We had so much momentum in the direction Gtown was headed as a program, the next year we won the MAAC and then joined the Patriot League and the promise of a new stadium in the middle of campus (our old grass game practice fields) was born.
I guess the reason that I write this (beyond that fact that my son asked where our stadium was.....which honestly on film looked much better than the construction pit with seating for 1000 that is the current field) is that I get mad when I see something with all the promise in the world (be it...talent, brains, opportunity, luck, you name it!) squandered. This is how I feel about the Gtown FB program over the past 10 years. All the promise, no support and nothing to show!
Where to go from here not sure, but I hope for something positive and fear more than the death of the program continued mediocrity. I can hope that someone recognizes the potential and funds a new era...otherwise why play? My personal opinion, you never turn back (play in a lesser league) and it does no good for anyone in sports to play just to be on the field...you compete to WIN - that's why we keep score and have rankings!
