And if there is no time for that, how bout cutting a pointless scene between Varys and Shae, that was just poor writing whether it was in the book or not (it wasnt)- dont write a scene where nothing happens, its pointless, this isnt Lost. I don't read the books and I don't plan to, but I thought that was one of the best and most important scenes in the episode. With that scene, we learn that Varys has political ambitions for Tyrion. We learn that Shae has developed deep loyalty to Sansa. We get the parallels between two people who have worked their way up in this world with very little opportunity for social mobility, and we see that they have both chosen to take part in this insane game even when they have a way out (recall Shae previously begging Tyrion to sail away with her). And we get a great line from Varys about having only one name, and how that is not enough. But no one is stabbed in the gut or loses any appendages or casts any spells, so I guess nothing happens. Also, no nudity. I'm not even sure that it happened.

Coldhands is the Tom Bombadil of ASoIaF ... a cool character but not as necessary to the story as some people think. The omission of Tom Bombadil from LOTR was the worst crime in the ENTIRE HISTORY OF CINEMA!!! Well, that, and leaving out The Scouring of the Shire. And casting Liv Tyler. And making The Mouth Of Sauron look like a Cenobite. And not showing Merry and Pippen getting taller. And giving the Balrog wings. Screw Peter Jackson. He is a rapist!!

Anyone else catch The Bridge last night?
I want to like it, because I like most of FX's original programming. I think the male lead, Demian Bichir, is great (I am not familiar with him), and I love Ted Levine (even though there are hints he might not be around for long).
However, I am struggling with one thing:
Is the female lead, Diane Kruger, A) a really bad actress, or B) giving a really good performance in portraying someone with Asperger's?
It was hard to watch her last night, but I don't know if that means she sucked or was doing a great job.
Also, was really hoping Matthew Lillard would die. Because he's, you know, Matthew Lillard.

From everything I've read, the intention is the latter. It's the latter. In the press materials, the character is explicitly described as having Asperger's. I'm not sure why they've chosen not to tell viewers somehow, but I've seen the first 3 episodes and it's never addressed.

Anyone else enjoy hate-watching Newsroom?
Cringe-worthy tin-eared Sorkinism of season premier with the Occupy Wall Street lady (paraphrased): "What's your name?" "My name is Jane Doe. I'm a PHD candidate in environmental sciences at NYU, where I also teach."
Wow. That's how people talk huh Sorkin? They describe the character you had in mind when someone they just met asks them their name?

The only good reason to watch that show is to be able to understand all of the comments that get posted in The AV Club after it's over. Which. Are. High-larious! Also, if you are a rabid misogynist, I imagine it's right up your alley. Ohhh, Mac and Maggie. They're so SILLY!

Finally watched the first 3 episodes of The Bridge. Liked it. Matthew Lillard's character is creepy, but that's a good thing.

Orange is the New Black is pretty good. Liking it a lot better than House of Cards, which was good, but every character in it is completely unlikable.

I second the "The Bridge" endorsement. Quite strong out of the gate.

Breaking Bad contingent still out there? Assuming so ... wow. Oh, yes. I was late to BB (started on DVD after season 4), but I got caught up right before "the final episodes" started. I'm happy to be doing this one in real time. I thought the end of the episode two weeks ago was one of the best TV cliffhangers I've ever seen, if not the best.

Breaking Bad contingent still out there? Assuming so ... wow. With 20 minutes left last night, my wife was begging me to turn it off and legitimately mad at me for making her watch the series and the unbelievable tension and sadness it has created. With 10 minutes left I was not sure how I was going to sleep last night. Spoilers: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * When Walt took Holly, as the father of 15 month old daughter, I completely lost it. Thank God even Vince Gilligan is not sadistic enough to leave a baby's life hanging in the balance for a full week, but my God this show is incredible.

(Some combination of Breaking Bad spoilers / fan fiction below) I think the hockey game (a Badgers comeback) is really just a hint that Badger's coming back for the finale. Walt decides he can't take on Uncle Jack and the gang by himself. The only help he can trust is Badger and Skinny Pete by telling them that Jesse needs help because he's a neo-Nazi meth slave (Walt claims to have deduced this by the existence of the blue meth, there's no coming clean of his role in this), with the intention of just killing them along with Jesse once they've helped him out. The only other time we've seen Badger this half of the season was his Star Trek fan fiction appearance in the opener (recapped here: www.vulture.com/2013/08/breaking-bad-badger-star-trek-story-animated.html). If this fan fiction is a preview of the finale, Kirk is Hank, Spock is Walter, and Chekov is Jesse. Whether Scotty is Badger (friend of Chekov) or Todd (distracted by Lydia's "pointies"), it seems like Jesse might not make it. Vince Gilligan has said that the Chekov story is not a Chekhov's Gun, but I'm not convinced. My guess: Walt uses Badger and Skinny Pete to go get the Nazis, Badger accidentally kills Jesse, Walt kills Badger, Walt ends up using the ricin on himself. There are some hints from who's credited in the finale on IMDB as to whether or not this may be right, but I won't discuss that if anyone is trying to avoid it.

Hmm thats interesting. I read this pieces that I like a lot (though it could be reading too much into things): previously.tv/breaking-bad/breaking-bads-upcoming-felina-finale-explained/And in the comments there were some more (crazy) evidence pointing at Marie because Hampshire in England is the home of the royal navy or air force and Purple is a royal color. Thats a little far for me though.

Seems like Homeland's season 3 plan is to fill 25 minutes a week with the teen angst of the Brody children. Exactly the kind of time wasting crap Breaking Bad never wasted our time with. By the way Showtime- brilliant move putting up the season premier against Breaking Bad series finale. Really smart move after your Emmy winning year. That way nobody bothered to watch Homeland and realize how meandering and poor a story it is in comparison.

Most striking to me is after two seasons of break-necking pace (too much Dr. Seuss in my life right now), everything has seemingly slowed to a crawl. I've fallen asleep during every episode thus far. Would not have happened last year. Masters of Sex has my interest, though. I like the naked parts.

Did anybody notice that LOST is back? Only this time it is in real life (not reel life). I was wondering whether or not it was too soon to make that reference. Guess not. Also, I think this might be of interest to those who read this thread... www.bbcamerica.com/real-history-of-science-fiction/show/The DVR is set!
