Is there actually a rule in baseball against faking getting hit by a pitch? I know in hockey and soccer there are specific rules against diving, but I've never heard of such a rule in baseball. I don't know the answer to that. I didn't accuse Jeter of cheating because I am unaware of a rule against doing what he did. I did, however, accuse him of acting like a puss Dukie. And I stand by that. I certainly agree with that last line. Just so I'm not I misunderstood, I wasn't trying to defend Jeter at all. I was asking if baseball had a rule dealing with this sort of junk, because if they don't they should.

Boz - the I don't know on the cheating is that I doubt there's a rule stating, "A player shall not fake getting hit by a pitched ball."
The rest is cheating.
I think you are mixing me up with Sir Saxa. Which is frankly insulting to Sir Saxa.

Whatever. I'm just having fun. This is baseball. Which means I think the whole thing is pretty gay.
(is it OK to say that, or am I going to get cited by the PC police?)
;D

Does anyone remember Reggie Jackson, caught between first and second, a putting his leg out ... just a little... to obstruct the throw to first? I think it was in the WS. Got away with it too. What was that? Gamesmanship? "bitch" move? BTW, if you are holding a bat and the knob gets hit by a 90 mph fastball an inch or two from your hand, I'd bet it would sting a helluva lot, even it you did not get a hit directly on your fingers. BTW2, where do corked bats stand on this list? Spitballs? Greased balls? It was actually his hip. And it was bitchery and cheating, plain and simple. And if you think I'm still bitter, you're right (even though I happen to have a baseball at home that Reggie autographed for my daughter). BTW, totally agree re the pain caused by the ball hitting the knob of the bat. That did have to sting, big time. So I would go easy on Jeets.

It's not even the question of cheating in my mind. I just think it's a bitch move and I can't think of another word for it. The other examples you give I don't see as cheating or unseemly at all. Scooping the ball? to me maybe he thinks he did get it? And why wouldn't you throw to first. You have to try and make one out at least? Framing the pitch I guess I see that as the catchers job. Again, I am certainly not defending Jeter, and although I don't have any personal animosity towards him specifically, I don't like the Yankees at all. My point was only that we are taught to "protect ourselves" by spinning a specific direction when batting. If the ball is close to hitting the batter, then many -- dare I say, most -- are taught to act as though the ball did hit them. I'm not saying that is right, but on the other hand, people here have been virtually unanimous in their sarcastic criticisms of the rules of golf -- where the obligation lays on the other hand. I'm not going to get into which view is right. I don't have enough data to do such. More importantly, I don't care enough. My objection all along has been with the Umpiring crew who blew the call as well as the system we have in place which both prevents corrections of such obviously bad calls with instant replay, as well as refuses to penalize individuals and or crews which blow such calls. But I think I have been consistent in defending -- albeit, without enthusiasm -- Jeter.

I agree with what boz said and I said earlier. Not sure if it's cheating. Don't really care. but it was a very unmanly wussy thing to do and I have no problem criticizing him or anyone else for doing it.
