Let me say this: I like Hollis. SoCal was my man. I just think the Cali kids tend to be a little softer than most.

Wesley would've been a lot better had he had better coaching. He and RBB.
Both were very good underclassmen who became disappointing upperclassmen because of their striking lack of improvement over the years

That lack of development characterized Gtown from 1990 - to the end of the Dabney Coleman era. Wesley would've been a lot better had he had better coaching. He and RBB. I thought he was turning the corner after the 02' season. It seemed like it was starting to click. He totally backslid and left the team mid season in 03'. That should have been a monster 1-2 punch with him at the 5 and Sweets at the 4. To ask an earlier question. He was a top 5-10 recruit at the Center position. I beleive Courtland Freeman was in the same range @ PF that same year.

Not to say our coaching was good at that point, but Wes was his own biggest enemy, IMO. Talented in that he was enormous and strong with pretty good touch around the basket, but really limited athletically. Wilson/Sweetney was the unstoppable front court that should have been.

Wesley Wilson was NOT limited athleticallly--guy could jump, ran the court like a deer and had touch/skill. He was million dollar talent, nickel brain--which in athletics there are a lot of guys like that.

WW = poor man's Kuame Brown
Outside of WW and Kevin Floyd....Cali Hoyas have done quite well for G'town.

I think you're overstating how athletic he was. He looked like a beast on the floor, but I don't think he was particularly athletic. I'll grant that he ran the floor okay, but he wasn't a great leaper. But we agree that the biggest problem holding him back was between his ears.

Athleticism was far from his problem--if he was on current Hoyas--he'd look like Blake Griffin compared to what they've had in the pivot. Guy jumped well, ran the court, finished strong, and was an NBA prospect with an elementary school attitude. Offensively he was one of the most gifted players they've recruited in pivot with touch/scoring ability too.

Gotta agree with RDF. WW was a stud physically. Don't have to be a truly great leaper when you are 6'11, but Wesley still was better at jumping than any 6'10 + big man the Hoyas have had in probably the last 20 years, including Zo. And the guy also had bulk, he had above average pivot moves and he had touch. To this day I don't understand how things went wrong. In his third year of eligibility he left the team after getting off to a rough start and having a conflict with a teammate or two. Not sure what happened and I never understood why he appeared to be frozen out of the offense in those early games he played. When he left the only true big man of any value that remained was Sweetney who was forced to carry the whole load on his own. A season before that I thought he was destined for the NBA. Has this thread been hijacked? Maybe I should throw in that Meeks seems like an intriguing prospect.

Agreed on Wesley being a great athlete. He was probably the biggest disappointment for me as far as someone who didn't live up to the potential he seemed to have. I kept waiting for him to just dominate games and it never came together for him. He still had times where he was really fun to watch though.

Can we offer this guy? I don't know anything about him but he's a top big man who seems to have a strong interest in us. That's enough for me.

Meeks is alot of what GU already has, but he is shedding weight, nimble, has touch and loves GU. I prefer Upshaw or TP, but don't think GU can afford to wait around if the kid wants to come.

Meeks and Parker seem very similar, but we need to land one of them. Big man depth is a must. We'll find that out this season with the absence of Moses.

I would prefer a more athletic (and a shot blocking) option to fit with the current team, but I wouldn't hesitate on offering Meeks at this point. (I hope he has one by now)
With UNC taking Joel James in this class, it's very unlikely Roy would go get another plodder of sorts in the next class. And Kennedy has said us and UNC are potential game-changers in his recruitment if an offer is given.
