Ben Howland's a good coach--but his problem this upcoming year--the way he needs to coach to win and the type of roster he has dont' mesh at all. This is going to be an AWFUL defensive team. They now have a duo in post that is just sloppy with Smith/Parker--those two guys are just cut from same cloth and Muhammed isn't built to tolerate that crap.
To answer ID's question--Howland's program hasn't hurt draft stock of guys and they've shined in NBA--Love/Westbrook/Collison/Luc Richard Mbah a moute, etc...and even Tyler Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee are in league and were drafted. You do that and kids keep coming and Anderson loved the pickup games with former NBA guys he saw in LA. Throw in weather/campus and AAU coach he hired as Assistant this offseason-and recruiting happens.
Kory McCray got it done for Howland-but at same time--he underachieves this year-he'll be fired. For a guy who has had a lauded recruiting year-he looked like he was going to be sick at EYBL Saturday. Just not a very personable guy and has no presence at all in the gym-and he was the strange coach who walked from coaches area across court after a game to get to lobby for some food--instead of what every other coach did-and go through the area reserved for them to get VIP treatment. Just a strange mofo.

What I don't understand about all this is the +/- of going to UCLA at this point - the program is on the verge of implosion and this type of superstar recruiting class is A) what got them into trouble in the first place as per the SI article and B) a gigantic raising of the stakes for all involved which increases chances of a gigantic flame-out. NCAA already warned about Muhammad recruiting - why attract more attention? And as a player/family of player, why would I want to participate in this high pressure dice roll? Believe me, this is not coming from a "I wish their recruits came to Georgetown" place, but rather a why go there at all...

Not surprise with Parker's decision. There are certain programs that belong on top. Good for college bb: UCLA, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgetown, Duke, and North Carolina.

I think a lot of people here are frustrated by our CONSTANT RECRUITING FAILURES because they mistakenly think Georgetown is one of those other programs in that list. I think we have been doing very well considering who we are. In terms of the basketball aristocracy, we are a second-tier program and there's nothing wrong with having sufficient grasp of reality to acknowledge that.

Sort of a perfect storm for them. UCLA hires Korey McCray who coached Jordan Adams and Tony Parker. Jordan Adams commits. Believe he's friends with Kyle who adds them to his list. Kyle visits and loves LA. He's got stars in his eyes. To each his own. With those two on board and Shabazz being a west coast guy, Adidas guy and good friends with Adams and Kyle, he commits. Parker waits it all out, sees 3 of his friends at UCLA with his ex-coach and it's a no brainer. Make no mistake about it. This all started with the hiring of McCray. Sure, he may be a one trick pony (not sure he will be of use in the future), but Howland is banking on this class restoring UCLA to prominence and re-opening recruiting doors which had been recently closed. If it doesn't and the team still struggles, bye bye Howland.

daymond, I get 100% what you are saying and if I am a 1 and done type or am getting something else by me going to UCLA (money benefits etc.) I get it - but if I am not a sure-shot 1 and done and need to work on certain aspects of my game (say conditioning for Parker) but have legitimate NBA aspirations, why throw my lot in with a total gamble of a program? Parker is not even guaranteed starter minutes, the previous fat guy with soft hands that was touted as an NBA lottery talent is still massively overweight and moving backwards! I wish them luck and can't wait to see what this looks like come November at that tourney in Brooklyn

What does Tony Parker’s commitment mean for UCLA?Quote:It took 57 minutes for Tony Parker to get around to announcing it, but the Miller Grove HS (GA) big man committed to UCLA on Monday afternoon at a press conference.
That gives Ben Howland arguably the best class in the country. Kyle Anderson and Shabazz Muhammad are two of the top three recruits in the country. Parker is top 30. Jordan Adams is top 75. That’s quite a bit of talent to bring into a program.
But does it guarantee the Bruins success?
Frankly, no. The issue with UCLA’s roster isn’t the talent, because there is an abundance of that. The issue is the makeup of the roster:

IMO.... Big East benefits from a competitive Georgetown, as SEC (kentucky), Big Ten (Indiana) ACC (Duke, NC), Big 12 (Kansas), and PAC 12 (UCLA). I realize that these programs will not be on top every season.

57 minutes? Sheesh. That's nonsense. He couldn't have just come straight out and said "I've selected UCLA"?

Interesting if he's referring to being an afterthought at UCLA.

So who knows could be. Also he tweeted out a picture of his crotch (clothed) with the caption "chill night for me" so yeah...there is that.

Well, I dont know if anyone really cares but here is the resolution to this:
From Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo!:
There has been speculation about Parker the last few days because of some cryptic tweets he sent out recently indicating he wasn't happy.
Tony Parker's HS coach told me today the UCLA freshman is "not happy about not playing" but insisted he doesn't intend to transfer.
