Wow, that's a real shock. Kennedy, Byrd, and Stevens all dead within a year.
Condolences to his family.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10942120Sounds like an awful ordeal for the survivors. Hopefully they all make full recoveries. Ironically, Mark Begich, the man who took Stevens' seat, lost his father in a small plane crash in Alaska.

The WaPo had a picture gallery today of many of the political figures, who have died in small plane crashes. It is remarkable how many there are.

Those kinds of sentiments are Editedy when Elvado posts them here, and they're Editedy when this moron throws them around facebook. I wish Sarah Palin had never become a national political figure, I think she's a pretty terrible person, and I wouldn't vote for her if you paid me, but no reason to go much further than that—certainly no reason to wish death on a person. Also sad to think that had Stevens not been prosecuted so recklessly, he may not have been convicted, would almost certainly have retained his seat, and who knows where he would have been on Monday.

who knows where he would have been on Monday. Who knows for sure, but if I had to wager, I would guess "on some telecom executive's private jet, heading off on some kind of corporate-funded vacation." Regardless of his conviction or its reversal, the man was a crook who lined his pockets through his lifetime of "public service" and I think that's a fair point for the obit writers to reflect upon.

The same could have been said of the classless responses to the death of Ted Kennedy on this board. Certainly the redistributions of wealth to Alaskans arising from earmarks are not welcome by all.
Nonetheless, the time for those comments as they relate to Stevens is not now. May he rest in peace.

Ted Stevens may have been a crook, but he never neglected to call the cops or emergency services when he knew someone was drowning.

Nothing like good old rescuer/failure to rescue liability - a favorite of many a slip and fall lawyer.

Ted Stevens was 87 and led a long and successful life. I'd ask those questions of the 16 year old in the crash, but come on, he was 87 years old and this was a tragic accident. This is like blaming his wife for letting him leave the house in the morning.

That may be so, but the homicide angle was not discussed in the original post on the subject. It is good that the topic is consistently a source of original thought. As to the "lining pockets" thing, that came from Strummer IIRC, not me.

Wherever Ted Stevens is right now, he's probably smiling knowing that the series of tubes is being put to such productive use.

Just read some of this entry on Stevens: www.opencongress.org/wiki/Ted_Stevens#Veco_corruption_investigationHere's a snippet: "Favors for his son On August 31, 2006, the Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based government watchdog group, exposed a 2003 LA Times article documenting nine separate cases in which Stevens did favors for organizations which had employed his son, Ben Stevens. (See Sunlight blog for full account) Since this time, other favors have been reported. In late 2003, Stevens secured a $29 million earmark for the "Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board," which was chaired by Ben Stevens. In December 2005, Stevens helped secure a $10 million earmark for a fishing venture for which Ben secretly held an investment option. [20] In 2005, The Anchorage Daily News reported that Ben Stevens held an option to buy into an Alaska seafood company at the same time as Sen. Stevens was creating a special Aleutian Islands fishery that would supply the company with pollock worth millions of dollars a year. Ben Steven's interest was withdrawn. [21] Fishery connected with Ben Stevens received earmark from Ted Stevens In late July, 2007, it was revealed that Trident Seafoods Corp., a fishery that received a $3.5 million earmark from Stevens to build an airfield, had connections to Stevens's son, Ben Stevens. While Trident provided the elder Stevens with thousands of dollars in campaign funds, it also provided the younger Stevens with "consulting" payments as he would direct federal grants to it, and many other companies.[1] "
