Brazil should be a huge favorite, not the choking Spaniards. Geez, how long are you gonna' hold 1588 against Spain, huh? They've never been a good bad weather team, even then. And sometimes you just run up against someone who's better than you. Like Drake. ;D

Well, 2 and 5/9 done with todays games. Nothing spectacular in the first game...Second game is still a draw so far but France started out strong and it has evened as the game goes on.
I know France has had trouble getting everything together coming up to the World Cup but they have the tools to get hot, learn some chemistry, and win the tournament.

The Nigerian goalie is man of the match! Messi is still scratching his head.

Although England spent most of the 2nd half in the US area, Howard was more than up to the task and played a great game. The US almost got that go-ahead goal in the 2nd half, saved for England by the post.

Although they didn't score, I found the 2nd half more even than the first. Nice game!

Off topic . . . but I continually read references to the England team as the "Three Lions." I don't remember that in prior world cups. I know it's because of the logo on their jerseys, but it seems contrived. A pale imitation of the Azzuri or les Bleus.
Is calling a team by its jersey becoming standard? Is the English Rugby team now called the Red Roses? Is the Welsh team the Ostrich Feathers?

The London Times covered the UK-USA 1-1 tie in typical British fashion. Excerpt TO THE Boston Tea Party and Belo Horizonte, the Royal Bafokeng stadium can almost be added. Here was parity that felt a lot like purgatory for Englishmen.
England have never begun a World Cup better, scoring brilliantly through their captain, Steven Gerrard, in just four minutes and yet they have seldom ended an opening game at a tournament feeling worse. Robert Green, Fabio Capello’s contentious choice to be No 1 goalkeeper, imploded. ...
Green’s 40th-minute howler, when he fluffed his handling of an innocuous long-range Clint Dempsey shot, ensured a scoreline of 1-1 and rewarded the Americans, inspired by Landon Donovan, for surprising superiority in the first half England slip up against USA

Talk about Chicken Littles! Loved how commentator SM went from predicting a comfortable 3-1 win for his English side to there's no way "we" win the Cup.

So, I assume that was press pool-like camera operation for the game that ABC had no control over. Was the BBC running the cameras 'cause I saw zero seconds of the USA celebrating after its goal.

What's interesting is that all the England players supported Green after a match. That's a very U.S. politically correct thing to do. In England they normally throw each other under the bus and are honest as heck.
Sidenote: you see lots of actions in European soccer that you would never see in a U.S. sport. For instance, Mourinho talking about how he hated living in Italy and wanted to leave and manage Real Madrid...all of one day before he was coaching his Italian team in the Champions League finals. Best part was this wasn't even controversial for him to say. U.S. sports have all these tampering rules and it was even a story that Phil Jackson said he wanted to get paid the same in his next contract. Imagine if he came out right now during the Celtics series, said he hated Los Angeles and wanted to coach the Knicks next year. People would go crazy.

Is the English Rugby team now called the Red Roses? Is the Welsh team the Ostrich Feathers? Pretty sure they have been called The Three Lions since forever. The logo itself, of course, isn't contrived at all: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_arms_of_England

Does anybody else think the vuvuzela horns are annoying too? I don't understand how they can be played all game long as if the entire crowd took a deep breath before the start, blew the horn all game long, and exhaled at the end of the match.

I don't understand how they can be played all game long as if the entire crowd took a deep breath before the start, blew the horn all game long, and exhaled at the end of the match. You are not alone my friend. World Cup Organizers are considering banning them! It sounds like a swarm of Bees! I assume it is simply a ton of people each blowing their horns periodically, but there are so many people with them it sounds like a constant thing. Excerpt France captain Patrice Evra has already blamed the noise generated by the vuvuzelas for his team's poor showing in its opening 0-0 draw with Uruguay.
"We can't sleep at night because of the vuvuzelas," Evra said. "People start playing them from 6 a.m. We can't hear one another out on the pitch because of them."
Chief organizer: Trumpet ban possible
