Interesting story on Scout about the 6'9" F playing high school ball in Connecticut. A couple excerpts:
"A few years ago, former Georgetown player Joe Touomou was doing one of the things he does best - combing overseas for top basketball talent. He happened upon a blooming talent in France.
Touomou suggested that Eric Katenda bring his game to the United States. Now, the Class of 2011 forward has gained the attention of some big college basketball programs."
Katenda listed offers from Iowa, Michigan and Notre Dame with interest from UCONN, West Virginia, Georgetown, St. John's and Georgia Tech. Katenda also says:
"Even before I came to the U.S., I wanted to go to Georgetown,” Katenda said. “Now that I started thinking about it, I see that there’s a lot of great schools out there.”

This is part of the insider article:
"Eric Katenda (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire Academy) was offered a scholarship this weekend by Georgetown head coach John Thompson III after he took an unofficial visit to the Big East school on Saturday.
"Coach Thompson called me earlier this morning to tell me that they offered Eric a scholarship this weekend," said Cheshire Academy coach Kevin Kehoe.
Katenda arrived at Cheshire Academy at the beginning of his sophomore season after having moved to the United States from his family's home in Paris, France. The 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward averaged 27 points and 13 rebounds per game in his junior season.
. . .
In addition to Georgetown, Notre Dame has also offered Katenda a scholarship. UConn, Michigan, West Virginia and Oregon State, as well as a variety of Ivy League schools, are also actively recruiting him.
While Katenda is a high-major prospect, he is still a work in progress. He has great length, mobility and athleticism for a player his size, as well as an inside-out skill set, but he needs to strengthen his body and refine his game. This is necessary for him to make plays against a high level of competition."

Sunday Recap: (from NERR)..
The nation’s top ranked sophomore Dejuan Coleman continued to be an absolute monster inside for the City Rocks as his size and power were simply unmatched in the field. Coleman’s running mate Eric Katenda also stood out as his length, mobility, and athleticism make him a menace around the rim on both ends of the floor while he continues to get more and more skilled on the perimeter.
The City Rocks won a battle of New York in the final as they scored a convincing win over the Long Island Pythons.

I compare him to someone we know very well and not Deng in that video. Reminds me of Kris Joseph at Carroll. Just has the ability to handle the ball, a nice shooting stroke, just bad decision making....that you can cure....But loved what I saw in that video.

Just as long as we dont get a Good Eric/Bad Eric situation.

Iowa's Scout site had an article on Katenda today. Apparently, Eric's been out with appendicitis for the last few months, which is why he's been off the recruiting radar. He lost 28 pounds and will be out for several more weeks, not attending the Vince Carter or LeBron James camps due to the illness. He's hoping to be back for the Peach Jam.
Claims offers from Iowa, Georgia Tech, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Rhode Island and Siena with increasing interest from Marquette and Michigan.

Where do we stand with this kid? A recruiting class of Katenda, Trawick, Daniels, and JOB/Chol would still be very good. There are still some very good ballers who havent committed.

I think we need to get a solid read from Hood pronto, and if it doesn't look solid, then we need to show Katenda some strong love and bring him in. No more wasting time. I would also say now that we push hard for Daniels now. I think if we got verbals from Katenda and Daniels it would take a bit of the pressure off - wouldn't be a "disaster" class anymore, and then we can go hard after some elite bigs (JOB, Chol), with a backup plan in case they don't work out (TJO).

The Joe T. connection can't hurt. I see him at all the home games so he is still interested in the program.
Issue with this kid I think is that the level of competition in his high school league is weak and so his stats are totally misleading - any guy with his height would likely be a star. Tough break that he didn't get to play over the summer against better players his own size.

Does anybody know where Toumou lives? If DC area, sounds like that could give Hoyas an edge...

He has his own foundation, the Kossengwe Foundation, that holds bball camps in Nigeria and Cameroon. I think the Hoyas could get this kid if they pressed harder. He's just not tier 1 in terms of recruiting right now.

Mainly a "bump"
Why did the staff lose interest in this kid? Seems like a good fit, seeing that he a tall, face the basket type player..

health issues really set him back and didn't allow for staff's to evaluate him. only a few kept recruiting him.

his appendicitis had him stuck in the hospital for a while this summer. that was the biggest issue, lost a lot weight and strength.
but I believe he did have a few minor basketball injuries pop up as well. Think he Also switched High School's, kid hasn't really been able to settle in since last spring.
Wake was one, I think Georgia Tech and Iowa had stayed on him, too.
