Defense is the key!

Important and gutty win. Team had a lot of chances to fold under adversity, but they didn't. Fought through the foul trouble, stepped it up defensively after USF made their run to cut it to 6, and continued to run the offense and take good shots. We will only go as far as our defense takes us.
Great game by CW. Showed up for 40 minutes, and kept attacking despite being unable to get to the line. 15 points, 4 assists, ZERO TURNOVERS. If there was a performance to be built off of for him, today's was it.
Freeman's production wasn't there in terms of numbers, but I thought he looked OK today. Shots just didn't fall for him.
Completely agree with the previous poster (Daytona?) that Greg gets the least calls out of an "superstar" in the BE. What does the poor guy have to do to get to the line? It takes two, three hacks for him to see a foul.
Clark shot the lights out, but more importantly, cut down his turnovers. We had very few stupid turnovers at halfcourt today, and almost all of them involved trying to get backdoor layups, which are more acceptable and usually do not lead to points in transition.
He's been much-maligned all year, but THANK YOU HENRY SIMS for showing up and being ready to play. Impacted the game defensively and on the boards, and even hit the front end of a 1 and 1. I hope to god this gives him some confidence as we progress towards the end of the year.
F- to the refs today. I don't care that we won by 20. Get your heads out of your asses and watch the game. That was a laughable performance that had no positives: completely inconsistent from half to half, touch fouls for some/no fouls for others who get mauled, Henry's "block" while reaching through the rim. Someone needs to be held accountable for their complete ineptitude. It's a good thing USF can't shoot at all from the outside, because you usually don't win games when you are -16 from the FT line in attempts. In a game where I thought we were the aggressor all afternoon, that is unacceptable.

Good minutes from Henry when we needed him. Good point. Henry contributed today when needed. Looked more confident. Whole team looked good. JT3 went to bench early, then more late due to foul trouble. Blew out USF without a LOT from Austin. That's a great sign. 8 pts from bench, out of 69, and 7 Boards Team played really well. TOUGH game next. Let's go Hoyas. Get it done!

enjoy that NIT South Florida!!! I'd like to see USF go dancing, especially given that Gilchrist missed so much time. The more BE teams the better as far as I'm concerned. I doubt it will happen though.

Good win. Ill never understand the criticism of Doris. She is always spot on at the collegiate and nba level. Her voice is not that flattering, but what comes out her mouth is usually spot on analysis. I dont get it. There are a large portion of people who just dislike a female voice talking about sports. I'm not saying the people criticizing on here have that reason, but it grates on a lot of men.

Great game. Fouls were pretty ridiculous considering what they were allowing USF to do but the team did an EXCELLENT job of overcoming it. The TEAM did a great job of overcoming a bad offensive performance from Austin. A great team game. Good defense.

South Florida shot less than 30% from the field, and only 10% on 3-point shots. Jones had his chuckfest (6-18) but everyone else was invisible. On the other hand, we're still not protecting our glass -- that will kill us tomorrow. There's a huge correlation between the minutes our bigs actually get and our rebounding over the years. I didn't get to see the whole game yet, but with Vaughn and Monroe in foul trouble, I imagine we played pretty small.

I would hate to be around someone like that because there is no telling what else may rub them the wrong way...

Tough call for the committee. Jones is clearly one of the best players in the best conference in basketball, and USF definitely competed all year long, but this loss is going to come off like it probably should - a 20 point loss in the quarterfinals of a post-season tourney. Sadly, I could definitely see Seton Hall beating ND tonight and being the last team in the tourney. That's a shame. Seton Hall aint good.

If we can overcome Karl Hess and the other clowns wearing their green jerseys in this game, an off production day from Austin and if Henry can step up to the plate like he did today, we may be National Championship material. A gutty, great game that will remain in my DVD archives.

Burke is good. I enjoy her. She's not in love with her own schtick.
A lot of officials prop up less talented teams in tournament play. It's maddening and it happens every year. This performance was embarrassing for the men in stripes today.
Except for the first five minutes of the second half, USF was awful. It should have lost by 30.

Good minutes from Henry when we needed him. Absolutely. I think we just saw when and how Henry can be effective. He needs to be in the middle of the zone D, and he needs to have our best guards around him so that we're not relying too heavily on him to run the offense. He doesn't have Greg's passing skill, but we know he can get a rebound or a put-back. And on D, he looked great taking up the paint. Those minutes were CRUCIAL. The score was still close enough for USF to make a run, but Henry didn't give up anything at all. Exactly. The experiment to make Henry convert from a center in high school to a big forward in college like Summers has gone on for about 2 years now. Lets call it a mistake and move on to using him where he can be productive, at center backing up Vaughn in a zone defense. If you still want to play man-to-man then bring in Benimon.

You listened to the last 7 minutes of the game where they didn't pay any attention to anything going on in the game and you think it's sexism that people don't like Doris Burke and Dave Pasch? You listened to them talk about the Georgetown 4 game slide without bringing up the fact that Austin was diagnosed with diabetes and was missing within the context of that slide? By the way, Doris Burke's voice is downright melodious compared to that woman who was the sideline reporter.

I don't get the Burke bashing either, but
I'd much rather have Bilas and Raftery...I NEVER want Sean McDonough to call another Hoya game

I prefer Jay Bilas to her of course, but I still dont mind her doing the game. She is not biased to any team (like Bilas-Duke) and she gives credit/criticism where it is deserved. But the way folks on this board come down on her after every game you would think she has done something super egregious to the Hoya Family..

Forget Bilas, I'd take Vitale or Elmore or Spanarkle 7 days a week and twice on Sundays over Burke. And I really don't like Spanarkle. Doris Burke and Dave Pasch are in the Billy Packer / Jim Nance territory for me as announcers I'd mute if I could get a radio feed.
And no, when they talked about the 4 game slide, they did not talk at all about Austin. They talked about Austin's diabetes in the second half in the context of "will Austin be able to play two games in three days in the NCAA tournament". They did not talk about how the Notre Dame game and WVU were affected by his hospitalization and diagnosis. But hey, everyone here thinks she does super research.

Jones is getting his 20 one way or another. The key is to make him work for it. 29 points on 17 FGA ain't gonna cut it. 20 on 16 is better, but make him work for 1 point per FGA and we're gonna win. Great call.

TC,
I know some people are sexist about Burke. I've seen postings on message boards and heard people in bars, say straight out that they do not like listening to women announce sporting events solely because they are women. Sometimes they say it in a way that it is merely preference -- not that Burke doesn't know -- but that they don't like the sound.
And I know that if some admit it, some dislike her because of that without thinking.
I think she's actually pretty knowledgeable compared to a lot of the guys we've had. Who was that on the Cincy game? Celestand? Now that dude didn't know jack.

Just got back from the game. Some initial thoughts:
1. Great effort by the team overall. They played TOGETHER. And of course, DEFENSE never hurts. This reminded me more of the an old school Big East game with low scoring (and a little bit more like the older JTIII teams when he first got to Gtown). Offense is nice, but Defense wins games.
2. USF is probably the worst shooting team I have ever watched live. There was no reason to respect any of their outside shots. I don't remember them hitting any. I think Jones is a good player, great athlete, and he's actually a little too unselfish (and every time he touched the ball, there was a foul called on us).
3. With Monroe's foul trouble (I know he scored a decent amount in the second half) and Freeman having a relatively quiet game in terms of stats, it was nice to see Jason play well (and finally score NOT only on a 3 pt shot).
4. Liked the little Henry brought to the game. Would have liked to have seen Vee out there some more. Also kudos to Jerelle and Hollis even though they didn't fill up the stat sheet.
5. Chris was good today. I still don't like it every time he drives in the paint but he needs to do that because we don't really have any slashers (there are just some drives you know aren't going to go in, but at least he's aggressive).
6. Cuse will be much tougher, but I like what I saw from the guys today. If we play good D and play together, we have a VERY good chance of winning tomorrow.
