Marquette rebounds well, forces turnovers and makes their threes. I'm not sure this isn't the worst matchup for us compared to how they matchup versus most teams.

Hopefully Vaughn and Monroe will eat their 'front line' alive. I mean, their tallest starter is 6'6''. If they pack it in with a zone to compensate, we have the personnel to hit 3s at a very solid clip. If they play tight man-to-man (as I suspect), then pound it down low and run our traditional offense.
I give this game a 60-40 shot for us, given the home court advantage and how hungry Marquette must be.

A blue collar game - defense and rebounding will win this game. Let's hope ours are better.

Who else thought that going into the year, Marquette & Pitt would be guaranteed W's? I know I did. Really? These are road games. The next guaranteed W at the Bradley Center or Peterson Events Center for anybody will be the first. Not to mention that both of these teams generally exceed preseason Big East expectations--besides us, the two winningest programs in Big East play since the conference expanded. I agree. Two of the toughest places to play. Great fans. Great programs.

Hey guys...thought I would drop by join the discussion:
-Our BE season thus far, can be summed up by the following quote from the movie Vegas Vacation:
"You don't know when to quit, do ya Griswold?... Here's an idea: Why don't you give me half the money your were gonna to bet, then we'll go out back, I'll kick you in the nuts, and we'll call it a day!"
We have been kicked in the nuts in our first two BE games, losing to WV and NOVA by a combined 3 points. Its to the point where some of us would rather get kicked in the nuts right away, then delay the inevitable.
OK...enough complaining...
-Hayward and Butler are our leaders...they will provide much of the production in terms of points and rebounds. Both are really good around the hoop. Hayward will shoot the open 3 without thinking...Butler is very good from beyond the arc, when he shoots (9-15 on the year). He often passes up open looks and drives.
-Dwight Buycks and Darius Johnson Odom (DJO) are 2 JUCO guards that have scoring ability, but struggle on the defensive end. Both like to take it to the rim, but DJO is shooting 57% from 3 point land.
-Acker and Cubillian are veterans, but should not be getting the amount of minutes they are. They are backup guards....that are getting starters minutes because of the lack of depth. They can hit the open shot, but struggle on the defensive end. The NOVA guards where getting into the lane with ease.
-We have had to deal with injuries and transfers already this year. Freshman (and likely starting, 30 MPG) PG Junior Cadougan tore his Achilles...Sophomore Center Chris Otule broke his foot...and Freshman PF Jeronne Maymon left the program at the end of the 1st semester. All 3 would have been heavily involved in the rotation...instead MU is left with only 9 scholarship players, and uses a rotation of 7.
-MU students are still on break, and it is weeknight...so I am not sure what to expect in terms of the crowd.
-MU needs this W, so as to not start the BE season 0-4...we go to NOVA on Saturday.
-Good Luck!

does your handle mean mu-then-gu, as in marquette-then-georgetown?
thanks for the thoughts. those injuries/transfer are a bummer for the program, but their bench isn't much thinner than that of the hoyas....though the hoyas might have an edge in talent, the golden eagles have it in experience.
i'm with SFHoya's assessment.

Yes...MU undergrad, and currently in grad school at GU. Our one on one defense is something I'm worried about. The way C. Wright has been filling it up...he might have a field day against whoever is guarding him. Acker/Cubillian/Buycks/DJO struggle in the one on one, and allow the man their guarding to get to the hoop with relative ease.

I agree our advantage is on the inside, I just worry about turnovers if we try to force the issue of getting the ball inside. Not sure the standard passes to the post will work out, especially if a shorter team fronts Greg and Julian. We can't waste many possessions tonight.

I think this game is going to be extremely difficult to win.
Let's keep it real: Marquette is going to play its best game of the season tonight.
They're 0-2 in the league by a combined three points. They HAVE to have this one because they play Nova on the road on Saturday.
They don't want to go 0-4. This is their most important game of the year and they will play it as such.
Add in the fact that they usually play well against us and usually present problems for us? This isn't the ideal set of circumstance for us at all.
We're going to have to BRING IT tonight if we want to compete. I'm extremely worried about this game.

daytona, I agree with every one of your points...except about being worried. In other words, if Marquette plays out of their mind, which I do think will happen, and we lose to a good team playing very well at home, than I guess I can deal with that. But, I hear you. You just totally get the sense that they need this game way, way more than we do. Then again, for the same reason, it would be a great win for us.

There were a lot of games we needed last year. That didn't seem to matter. Needing it more doesn't equate to you performing well or winning the game.

Good point. And, I recognize that, too. I just have a feeling Marquette will play the game of its season tonight. There are other reasons, too. As I said before, and others have noted as well, a pressing team, playing up tempo and getting a lot of steals might be a bad matchup for us right now given our TO problems

agree with daytona - gots to play some serious D tonight. this team was supposed to be rebuilding, but sure didn't look like in their first two BE games! we need games like this if we are going to compete for be crown.

I'm hoping their two games against WV and VU were their games of the season and they're all burned out now.

The difference was that we were at the end of the year last season, and we were so down confidence wise that once Marquette and Louisville made their run, we weren't going to answer. It just wasn't going to happen.
Plus, we weren't beating Louisville anyway. We weren't good enough.
Marquette is at the beginning of the schedule, and still has a shot. They'll have ALOT of fight in them tonight.
If we somehow win this game, it will be our best win of the season.

Yes, I think we can win, but we must keep the TOs down and rebound well.

The Hoyas don't need this game? Every W counts the same whether it's Marquette, Syracuse or whoever is on top of the standings. No let ups like last year. GO HOYAS!!! BEAT THE WARRIORS!!!
