I object to the categorizations of the following as overrated:
Arrested Development (gets funnier each time I watch it) The Departed In n Out (east coaster, and still think it is fantastic) Cats Dave Matthews (was overrated at some point, but now back to earth)
Things that are overrated: - Cruises - Homecoming - Halloween Parties after the age of about 22 (at some point you're just too young to either be dressing up as a slutty pumpkin or hooking up with someone dressed as a slutty pumpkin) - Caviar - New stadiums (for the sport and sport-watching experience itself) - Marvel Comics (generally overrated. With the possible exception of Spidey or and X-Men book once every few years, I don't understand the big deal.)

Ok, we could go around and around about In&Out all day. It's not the best burger ever; anyone who says that it is either expressing a personal preference or has never been outside of fast food land. It's just really freakin' good. It might be over hyped but I don't think it's over rated. And regular vs. animal style is part of the Cali mystique. Besides, any Californian will tell you that the best food you can purchase is fish tacos . Re: fajitas: um ..... huh? Fajitas are just too complicated - I never get the perfect combination of tortilla, fixings, and meat. For something that comes out sizzling, fajitas are very overrated.

I am not trying to say fajitas suck. They're good. But that's about all they are, IMO. Occasionally, you will go to a nice restaurant that makes them really well, but for the most part, at least with steak and chicken varieties, I find them a little disappointing, particularly with the quality of the meat (and yes, I have been to Rio Grande). I just think they happen to be everyone's favorite Mexican food, and I don't really get that. Doesn't mean I'll never order them. But it did make me think of something else along those same lines: Overrated: Paella. Underrated: Properly prepared and cooked paella.

I couldn't agree with SF more about IPA's. I find them brutal.
Other Overrated (Not as Good as Reputation): Halloween Blackberries (electronic, not fruit) Domino's Pizza

Fish Tacos definitely do not disappoint, but like many regional foods, fall far short outside of their region of origin. Fish Tacos in San Diego were among the best food I've ever had. Fish Tacos at Baja Fresh in Arlington aren't nearly as good.

Fish tacos are deliciousness. The issue for Fajitas is the chincing (sp?) by most restaurants on the fixin's.
I can see people's point on In n Out -- reality is almost anything that is very good will be overrated by someone.
I think the go-to item on here is "New Year's Eve" which is undoubtedly a disappointment.

Re: New Year's Eve. You think it is a disappointment for all of you? Try having it also be your birthday. Always a party, never for me, and a pain to get friends together to celebrate with you because it conflicts with whatever New Years' plans they have or their significant other is dragging them to.
Luckily, Coach and the BE officials decided to help me out this year. Thanks, all.

As for IPAs... here's my thing.
I love the microbrew "thing" going on. But the IPA is the go-to beer right now, and the way to brew it is not balance but to basically get as hoppy as possible. It's starting to turn already, but brewers will see over the next few years that balance and variation are more desirable than straight blow-your-face-off-hops.
I don't think there's a lot of wine drinkers on here, but I'll compare. California wines got good initially by playing at the extremes -- massive cabs and creamy chards. Now they are realizing that's boring (and a little over the top) and are making a wider range of wines and also subtler wines.
I feel like every time I see a beer selection 70% of it is a pale ale or an IPA. Where are the Pilsners? The Ambers? The subtler Pale Ales? The bocks, the marzens, the dunkels, the brown ales?
They are out there, but I feel like most microbrews are very strong and over the top right now -- either hop bombs or heavier items like dark belgians or stouts.
Just saying.

Has anyone mentioned Radiohead and Coldplay yet?
I think we have to include them.
I want to be clear, though, that they are the "good, but not that good" variety, not the "overrated because they actually suck" kind.

Butter is also overrated, I just scrambled me some eggs with olive oil (ran out of butter) and they taste pretty damn good.

Coldplay was mentioned, and I would have to agree simply because they are up in the stratosphere where nobody belongs right now. Their recent album was very good top to bottom, but enough already. They can be a little too cheeky for me, but when they stick to music, good stuff happens.
As to Radiohead, I have to disagree respectfully, and I am not some Radiohead junkie. I have their recent album and a "Best Of" collection that they put out. I felt no pressure to buy either and paid the bare minimum for the recent thing. In all honesty, I can't think of a bad track on the "Best of" thing, and there are 30 tracks. I don't pay much attention to what others are saying about groups/bands, in fairness, but I don't get the sense that they are put out there to death like Coldplay.

The Beatles are most definitely not overrated.
Butter is also not overrated. Everything tastes better when cooked with butter. If it doesn't you're not cooking right. Whenever you're trying to figure out why some recipe doesn't taste as good as you remember it when your mom made or when you had it at a restaurant, chances are it is because of a lack of butter.

Tapas! JE_III, you are my new favorite poster for the next sixty seconds or whatever.
--------------
Ethiopian/Eritrean food. If it was from Norway, people would hate it, I think.
Dallas (the City). Okay, no one pumps up Dallas, but there's no reason it is so big.
High end sushi.
Martinis.
Peet's Coffee.
Dunkin' Donuts Coffee.

Show up for one of theiir breakfasts, and you'll be happy - probably the best in the world. Expect anything out of lunch and dinner, and you'll be disappointed.

I just don't get Dallas. If I go there, and I'm not a Cowboys fan, what do I do?
This is an actual line from Dallas' wikipedia article: "Famous products of the Dallas culinary scene include the frozen margarita and the chain restaurants Chili's and Romano's Macaroni Grill."
(Also, this isn't a coastal thing -- I love Chicago, Milwaukee, Louisville. I've had good times in KC, St. Louis and Birmingham. I like Houston, actually.)

Other overrated cities:
Charlotte. San Antonio and the "Pirates of the Caribbean meets Fremont Street" Riverwalk.
Just to be fair: Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.
