Haven't gotten my issue yet. Was there anything regarding the women's basketball team in it?

Haven't gotten my issue yet. Was there anything regarding the women's basketball team in it? There was not. I seem to remember in past years there was. They should include it, especially because this year the women have a chance to really make some noise and compete in the BE.

In The Hoya's defense, The Hoya has covered the men in its glossy magazine for the past three years and the women in the print issue. The reason is simple: The men's team is what the campus and community are interested in. There is no other sport that receives nearly as much attention on this board as the men's basketball team. The Hoya does, however, cover the women's team extensively in print issues and online. Terri Williams-Flournoy was named coach of the year last year www.thehoya.com/sports/coach-of-the-year-terri-williams-flournoy/, Jaleesa Butler was featured in Tuesday's issue (before the blog post criticizing the coverage was written: www.thehoya.com/sports/butler-prepares-step-leader/), A preview is in Friday's issue ( www.thehoya.com/sports/improving-hoyas-sky-limit/), and the women were featured in a Midnight Madness photo spread ( www.thehoya.com/albums/midnight-madness-2009/). The Hoya has also live blogged a women's game last year and ran a full page pictorial graphic of their schedule earlier in the fall. Sure, The Hoya covers the men's basketball team more than the women. But that is because that's where the demand is, and the women are also extensively covered.

While I know there's a business component to it, I think the complaint is valid. The Washington Post usually justifies its extensive coverage of UMD compared to Georgetown by saying that's what sells papers and we all grumble about it on this board.
In year's past the basketball preview always had more pages devoted to the men's team, but the women were included (at least through 2003, after that I don't know). I don't think anyone here thinks the paper is biased against the women's hoops team, but what's the rationale for cutting them out? Printing costs?

I wouldn't say they cut them out as much as they moved the men's coverage to a different forum. They print the mens preview magazine and keep the women's basketball preview in the newspaper. I'm sure printing costs have a lot to do with it since the men's preview is now a glossy full color magazine.
