Minnesota's Williams Arena is the oldest in the Big 10. It is NOT the only one with an elevated floor, however.
Purdue's Mackey Arena, completed in 1966, also features this odd extra.
When the Boilermakers aren't in a coma as they are now, it is also one of the nastiest places in the country.
Also, Vanderbilt's court is elevated, I'm pretty sure.
One guy's nasty list, based on current images...
1. New Mexico's "Pit" 2. Michigan State's Breslin Center 3. Phog Allen Field House 4. Wisconsin's Kohl Center 5. Illinois' Assembly Hall 6. Bradley Center, home of the ORIGINAL "We ARE..." chant..."We ARE...Mar-quette..." 7. Kentucky's Rupp Arena 8. Minnesota's Williams Arena 9. U.C.-Santa Barbara's "Thunderdome" 10. Notre Dame's Joyce Center 11. Oregon's McArthur Court 12. West Virginia University Coliseum 13. Arkansas' Walton Arena 14. Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena 15. Duke's Cameron Indoor 16. The Palestra (St. Joe's/Nova raise it, Penn/Temple drag it down) 17. Indiana University's Assembly Hall 18. Louisville's Freedom Hall 19. Xavier's Cintas Center 20T. Dayton's U.D. Arena Pitt's Peterson Center
Also in the hunt -- Villanova's nameless, faceless Pavilion (can get damn loud in there; the old school spirit seems to be returning...20,000+ tickets sold for Syracuse game Saturday in South Philly), Carrier Dome (just by sheer volume), Saint Louis University's new campus arena, L.S.U., Lamar, Mizzou's Thomas Hearnes Center, Gonzaga's new place.

I forgot about the Bradley center. When they're decent and they sell out that pro arena...
There's something to shoot for.

Buckeye-I don't think you can do a top 20 list and not include the RAC. The Rutgers team is rarely better than average (and usually a lot worse) and I know that I usually count our home game against them as a win, but the away game as a loss. They play like a top 25 team at home and a bottom tier BE team on the road. The only reason can be their arena and the fans. Are the places on your list tough? Yeah, but a lot of them are home to amazing programs that are just as tough to play at home-which makes it pretty hard to tell whether its the arena or the team. With Rutgers it's clear-it's the arena.

9. U.C.-Santa Barbara's "Thunderdome" I'd like to know who this guy is. Although I've never been to a game there, since when was UCSB relevant and since when was their arena considered more intimidating than freakin' Cameron Indoor? Also, Stanford's recently renovated Maples Pavilion can usually be found on these lists. I've attended a ton of games there, and that small place (only holds about 7,500 now) can get LOUD especially for big games, where the springy floor can literally shake. Students are right on top of the action. Waiting for TBird to call me a homer in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... Then again, I can retort with the same response.

It might be true they have to adjust to the raised floor, but the crowd at the Barn isn't particularly noteworthy. DIKEMBED!!!

I have a hard time believing that a school whose team name is the Gauchos Locos has an arena and a fanbase that can inspire fear in any opponent and can make it onto some person's list of the top 20 toughest places to play in college basketball. Hell, I think I'd have to choose Conte Forum over that place. Wait, no....

nice to see that allen fieldhouse is getting the respect it deserves. i have not been in a louder arena than games at the fieldhouse. they place goes nuts for exibitions against division III teams. they dont even need to take attendance because i dont think they have not sold it out in twenty years. it always says 16,300. this is the fiftith anniversary of the fieldhouse (march 1) and i think that in the coming weeks you will see national stories about the storried arena. unbelievable to think that allen has been here for fifty years and that it will probably last another fifty.

Just thought I'd bump this thread, as Air Force is playing New Mexico at the Pit right now on ESPN. It'll be a good opportunity to see a true home court advantage for the Hoyas out on the West Coast and all the current Hoyas who are keeping normal college hours

Did I hear the announcer say that their seats are in the 14th row? The New Mexico fans don't sit until their opponents score (which was something like 8 minutes into the game) and I thought the one announcer said something about not being able to see because of how far back their seats were.

I thought I heard that too. I really like the idea of no one sitting in the arena until the opponent scores. That would have been awesome against Penn State. Now how do we implement that in MCI?
