Today, I think that the team missed another big athletic body like Vern Macklin. I know that he did not show much last year and many people here had no use for him, but I have got to believe that his presence would have made a difference on the boards. ALso, when Wright struggles the entire backcourt is off.
My real concern is that Freeman cannot play the 3 without this team losing a lot on the boards. He is simply too short and does not have the hops to get rebounds. Summers is often playing away from the basket. Would love to see Thompson go big once in a while with Wright and Sapp at the guards, Monroe, Summers and Vaughn up front. Not losing much on the offensive end as long as Jesse is struggling. I think that Summers is quick enough to play the 3 on defense.

Well I think we all thought Vaughn/Sims would more than make up for the loss of Macklin but it hasn't happened,

Actually Freeman was OK on the boards today, and Macklin was a pathetic defensive rebounder. But yea, we suck at rebounding.

Yeah... Macklin was no rebounder. Freeman is quite good considering his size. We needed Blair today.

Why start a thread on this? Macklin is gone. He's not coming back.

I always thought if we recruited a Blair/Adrein(CT guy) as a 4/5 it would take away from our "O" So I live w/the bad rebounding. Also, besides GM we are a small team. D has size, but he is a wing player, so I his 6'8 frame is not going to matter..

No, we were missing heart today. We didn't want it nearly as much as Pitt.

We got killed on the boards, but Macklin wouldn't have changed it.

The topic of this thread is ridiculous. Macklin was not a good rebounder and couldn't shoot from the floor or the charity stripe to save his life. What in the world makes you think we miss him?

ok macklin sucked yada yada yada, we're beating a dead horse, etc. but i 'd like to think that with three yrs of experience and some serious athleticism, he would have had a greater impact than vaughn. obviously a moot point and something that doesn't need to be discussed, but you're ignorant if you don't think he could've helped out today.

To the degree this thread belongs on the board at all is the bigger issue of transfers affecting depth, and that 1/3 of the way through the season GU hasn't found much help off the bench. And while we can talk about "addition by subtraction" etc etc, it would be nice to keep players in the program who play 10-15 minutes a game as sophomores.
That said, the issue is there, and I think it is a dead horse after this game, it can't be changed, except going forward - keeping the reserves in the program.

Ignorant? You'd like to think? Macklin averaged 2.1 rebounds per game in 12.8 minutes played last year shooting 25% from the line. This year Vaughn is averaging 2.3 rebounds per game in 11.8 minutes played shooting 53% from the line. As for experience, Macklin played in 31 games during the 2006-07 season and 34 games in the 2007-08 season while Vaughn played in 31 games last year for Florida State. More athletic? Sure, but Wesley Wilson was athletic. Jonathan Wallace and Roy Hibbert weren't "athletic". So tell me again how much we missed Macklin.
