I'm not calling you an idiot. I'm not necessarily calling those people calling Mullens the most overrated recruit of all time idiots. I gave those folks the chance to have an agenda or no sense of history.
But there's several things wrong with those statements. Mullens was only the #1 recruit by rivals. He wasn't the consensus #1 by ANY measure -- Brandon Jennings was.
Jennings was #1 on Hoopscoop, Hoopmasters, Scout, Prep Stars, USA Today and Sports Illustrated's rankings.
On RSCI, Mullens was #8, 2 behind Greg Monroe.
So he's not even the consensus #1 recruit. Which makes it really freaking hard to be the most overrated consensus #1 of all time. It's like saying Adlai Stevenson was the worst president ever.
Second, you should know that most of those folks have big agendas. The press has an agenda to sell stories, though I have yet to see a press member make the claim you cite. Those fine folks on the rivals message board just like to tear down every player that isn't theirs. They ripped down Greg Monroe was he was #1 -- now they are after Mullens.
Lastly, we're ten games into the season. It's a bit early to call anyone overrated.
--------
As for Matta, I can't really fault him for his big man development with the players you cite. Oden had less than a year with Matta. Koufous had a year and frankly didn't want to be a big man -- which as I understand was a large part of his complaint. Mullens is ten games in.
If we had judged Jeff and Roy after one year, would you have given Thompson so much credit? Most people were writing off Roy even during his sophomore year.
I believe David West finished his last year at Xavier when Matta was there, though he's not really a big man. They had a couple of decent guys on the team two years ago as well that started under Matta, I think.
I do agree with you that record alone doesn't make a great coach. But absent the kind of attention that I give to watching Georgetown, it's hard to tell.
