This may have been mentioned late last week, but I thought it was amusing: www.diamondbackonline.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/01/28/41f9ca982b370Excerpt: Upon entering Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke students received a cheer sheet full of “The Dirt on Our Opponent - University of Maryland Terrapins.” In the section on Caner-Medley, in addition to details of his summer arrest in Maine, was a statement about his girlfriend — “NCM’s girlfriend is named Myra, and her pet name for him is ‘Piggy.’” The Duke fans made oink noises and chanted “Piggy” not only while Caner-Medley was attempting free throws but also throughout the game. But the information about his girlfriend and her pet name for him was false, planted by a person who wished for the Cameron Crazies to embarrass themselves. If the Cameron Crazies had chanted “Myra Piggy,” it would have sounded like “Myron Piggie,” the name of a former basketball coach and crack cocaine dealer who pleaded guilty to giving money to college basketball players, including former Blue Devil Corey Maggette, in one of Duke’s scandals. A 23-year-old male from North Carolina who operated under the pseudonym “Lance Nichols,” said he received an e-mail copy of the cheer sheet for Duke’s last home game against Virginia. At the bottom of the sheet is a screen name, CheerSheets, that students can instant message to “contribute for the next game.”<br> “Nichols” made up a false screen name — JerseyKidatDuke — and by answering several trivia questions about Duke campus life with the help of his friend, a Duke graduate student, he was able to convince the student monitoring the CheerSheets screen name that he was a Duke student.

Absolutely hilarious. And chanting about an opposing player's girlfriend? Dookies have no class whatsoever.

If this doesn't settle the issue of whether cheer sheets (that in fact focus more on dishing dirt on opposing players as opposed to cheers for the hometown team) should be discontinued at home Hoya games, I don't know what will. Its not that I don't like the idea of cheer sheets, provided that cheers are in fact what they focus on - i.e., passing along to the underclassmen / new fans the popular Georgetown cheers, traditions, and fight song.
From what I've read on the board (unfortunately, being an out of town alum, I haven't had the opportunity to attend a home game in person yet) I get the impression that the cheer sheets that have been passed around at Hoya games lean more towards the "player dirt" variety. I hope that (in light of this article) the folks at Hoya Blue or whoever has coordinated such cheer sheet efforts in the past focus more on getting the Hoya supporting fans on the same page with cheers than informing fans of the name of Curtis Sumpter's girlfriend's pet gerbil!

Please. Let the kids have some fun. If it'll get more students excited about coming to games, then that's great. As long as their isn't serious profanity, I have no problem with it. Players and coaches can't stand by ready to accept every once of praise and glory that the media and adoring fans will send their way when things are going well and then complain the minute something negative comes their way from that media or other fans. Part of being on stage is the possibility of getting heckled.

I hear you Big Dog, and as I was writing my above post I tried to write it so as to avoid coming off as some sort of curmudgeon trying to rain on students having fun at games (not sure how well I succeeded though!). Basically, I think the student fans definitely should have their fun at the games and, within reason, should be able to razz the opposing teams, but reading the "Dukies Duped" article just kind of punctuated for me that, in some cases, the cheer sheets that try too hard just end up coming off as more lame than clever (and I recall reading a similar sentiment regarding the cheer sheets from some of the current student posters on the board as well).

I agree that some heckling is ok, but cheer sheets try too hard. If it isn't simple, it won't work.
Too of my favorites from past years were at Uconn games yelling "Slim-Fast" at El Amin (who had a somewhat atypical point guard build) and "Backstreet Boy" at Voskul, who I think spent more time on his hair than my wife. Voskul actually laughed when we chanted during pregame warm-ups, and if he laughed he was listening, and if he was listening he wasn't paying attention to what he should be, and that's the point, not who can come up with the most obscure information about someone.

I agree with you, Grandpa. Cheer sheets generally seem to be more for those who can't bother to actually watch the game and scream about what's going on.

If our cheer sheets were actually clever or thought out, maybe they would be worth having. From the look of the sheets passed around at gtown games this year, it seems that they took maybe a minute to compile. Usually its a picture of a a player, with a stupid look alike or stupid name (ie: Quinn from ND looks like a Gremlin) or a player who never plays is made fun of for, suprise suprise, never playing. I don't think anyone really cares. It is hilarious that someone took the time to mess with the dukies though, too bad it didn't really work

Was I the only one that read this and thought the supposed "punk" was pretty lame? Me too. And about the cheer sheets at Gtown games, well, you can't really call them cheer sheets, as they don't really have cheer sheets. If they had clever cheers ("what's your exit" for rutgers, "flush the johnnies" for SJ, etc) and the traditional cheers and an attempt to maybe create some tradition (chanting along w/ the "we are" movie) they could be worth while. I think the key is to have some clever ideas and the traditional ones as well as allowing for creativity by the student body.

Coincidentally, while I was in class this evening, I discovered that I had a copy of the cheer sheet from the St. John's game last week in one of the pockets of my backpack. Since Hoya Blue's efforts in the cheer sheet area have come up, I'll try to recreate what's on this one as best I can. The format has boxes and logos all over, so I'll just go sort of from top to bottom, left to right. Pictures are described in brackets. My comments are in parentheses:
FRONT SIDE
HOYA BLUE name and logos Game: 18 vs. St. Johns - 1/25/05 GTOWN's Overall Record 12-5, Big East Record 4-2
[GTown Bulldog logo] vs. [SJU teddy bear cheerleader]
GTown takes on St. John's in another BIG EAST Battle...St. John's is coming off a few tough losses to BC and Notre Dame after upsetting Pitt.
(in big italic caps): Attn Students: We Need the Student Section to Be Louder
[megaphone w/ Georgetown written on it]: "We Are...Georgetown" "De-Fense" "Here We Go Hoyas, Here We Go" "ETC..." ESPECIALLY UPPER SECTIONS! (FLHoya: Hoya Blue allegedly uses these people called "Hoya Hollerz," guys with megaphones in the front few rows, to yell out cheers. This appears to be asking students to heed these people's directions. From what I have observed--I seldom see them, they can't be heard that well, and other people in the front dislike them for stepping on other cheers. In the past, this section has also asked us to remember "The 'Hey' Song," by which I assume they mean Rock and Roll Part 2.)
ROY!...ROY, ROY, ROY [in box]: As soon as he starts to dominate, let's start serenading him with his song...ROY!! ROY, ROY, ROY!!! [picture of Hibbert]
[pic of SJU player] [in box]: Freshman guard Dextar Gray (24) chose the Johnnies over Providence, Villanova, BC, and...GEORGETOWN...what was he thinking?
(just below at bottom of page): BENCH WARMER OF THE WEEK [pic of SJU player] [in box]: "Air Canada" Nygel Roach (00) swooped in as a walk on last year to find a permanent spot on the pine.
(bottom right corner) CELEB LOOK ALIKE OF THE WEEK [in box] Before his days at St. John's, Jermaine Maybank (10) had successful show biz career playing Lopan in the 1980s classic, "Big Trouble in Little China". [above, side by side pics of Lopan and Maybank with the instructions, "Check Out smile and hair."] (FLHoya: Smile matches, face kind of does, hair--no.)
END FRONT PAGE (FLHoya: Of those mentioned on the front page, only Dextar Gray played that night. I cannot recall to what extent any of the listed cheers were hollered out by megaphone. The fact of the matter is, all of those chants except We Are Georgetown have been standard vanilla fare at games for decades, and We Are Georgetown certainly didn't need a cheer sheet, JT3 pretty well covered it at Midnight Madness and the day his hiring was announced.)
BACK PAGE
YOUR GEORGETOWN HOYAS [Standard looking roster, about 1/2 page]
[bulldog logo] vs. [SHU logo] Feb. 2nd Retro Night and Senior Night at MCI Be Cool...Wear Old School Seniors Come Early...lower seats will be reserved (FLHoya: There's some debate over whether that last part is true.)
[box]: Hoya Blue General Meeting Wednesday 1/26/05 at 9pm in Reiss 112 to Discuss: *Hoya Blue Road Trips!* [box below this]: RUTGERS: 2/5/05-- Overnight, leaving Saturday the 5th returning Sunday the 6th
ST JOHN'[sic]: 2/20/05--Day trip leaving GTown around 9 coming back later that day.
[box, bottom left]: Student Fan of the Game [picture of him, with name below it] (FLHoya: The Student Fan of the Game went away for most of the beginning of the year. In previous years, the SFOG was selected at the end of a game by someone associated with Sports Promotions. They were announced at the game and received an autographed team ball and their picture with a player. This year, as the SFOG has been done in the past 2-3 games, the winner is announced at the start of the following game, and wins a seat on the Hoya Blue couch at the front right of the student section. Though I can't confirm any of this, I have been informed of concerns by a few folks, and have my own suspicions, that the Hoya Blue board may in fact be in charge of selecting the winner, and is partial to their own personal friends. The type of pictures used for the SFOG on the sheet--clearly a common form of photo taken at a party that may/may not also serve as one's Facebook photo--along with other clues from past cheer sheets tend to support this theory in my view).
WELCOME BACK [pic of Ramell Ross] RaMell Ross WE MISSED YOU (FLHoya: As we are aware, RaMell's mother passed away a few weeks ago. This was announced prior to the 1/11/05 game against Rutgers at MCI, two games prior to this one. I don't recall whether this same note appeared on the previous game's cheer sheet, but someone did walk through the section asking for cheers in support of RaMell should he enter the game).
[bottom right box] To get on Hoya Blue email list: email [address]
END CHEER SHEET
So there you have it folks. Discuss.

It did not appear on the ND cheer sheet, which is sitting on my desk. Also, I know b/c I was the person during the ND game walking through the student section telling everyone to cheer if Ross entered the game. I don't think the section ended up cheering though, as Ross was a quick sub at the ND game the one time he entered the game so no one really noticed he went in until play resumed and it was too late (he had a quick foul if I recall)

The ND cheer sheet is even worse. I'll try a FL type recap:
Front Page: Hoya Blue logo Georgetown logo v. ND logo "G-Town takes on 12-3 Notre Dame in a must win for the Hoyas as ND tries to preserve their 6-0 record at MCI...We won't let 7-0 happen" A picture of a girls bball team (I think, the pic is grainy) labeled as "The Fighting Irish Starting 5" along w/ the names of the starters. "Celeb. Look Alike of the Week" "Which one is ND's Rick Cornett?" (Cornett and a pic of Shrek) "Chris Quinn doubles as Stripe the evil Gremlin (check out the eyebrows) Bench Warmer of the Week: "Senior Greg Bosl has totaled 4mins and 3pts in his illustrious bball career at ND-great pickup" [TBird-just curious, but what are the stats for Giubunda?] and "LETS GET LOUD" is in the lower right hand corner
Back Page:
Standard Roster (about half a page) "Welcome the Newest Member of Rejection Row:" There are pics of Alonzo, Ewing, Dikembe, some kid who I assume is in HB (a standard Facebook pic) and the "Newest Member: 'Big Mean' Jeff Green" [TBird-this part really makes me mad. It's my understanding that Dikembe and Zo made up rejection row and that Ewing wasn't a part of it. Also, the random kid instead of Roy? Well, that was a good call. I mean, this could have been pulled off "Remember Rejection Row (pics of Zo and Dikembe), well, it's back (pics of BB, Green, Roy)] The student fan of the game's pic is clearly taken from a party/drinking/facebook. And there's the same road trip info as the SJ game's cheer sheet.
And you wonder why people are calling for HB to be replaced? I mean, that wasn't even a cheer sheet. It didn't even get our own history right.

Also, just b/c I have no homework right now, I facebooked the kid who was mentioned as a member of rejection row on the ND cheer sheet. First off, his name was spelled wrong (don't ask me ). Secondly, I was correct about his membership in Hoya Blue as that's what I searched for to find him (I knew it was him b/c his facebook pic was the exact same as the pic on the cheer sheet) I am ashamed to go to a school that condones the killing of trees for things like this.

On a (possibly) completely unrelated note, at one of the recent home games I saw someone sitting near the front wearing a shirt that either said just "Media Whore", or used the phrase in a sentence.
