Crazy? It actually would have made a lot of sense. Despite Oprah's backing of Obama, I think she's able to connect to a lot of people, and therefore Illinoisans, on a nonpartisan basis. Moreover, despite her lack of political experience, there's a world of difference between Oprah and someone like Caroline Whatsername in NY. Oprah's demonstrated enough leadership and acumen in the business/media world to indicate that with the right staff, she could be reasonably successful for a couple of years in the Senate, before stepping aside to let a "real" politician run for the seat. In the same vein, I would have expected a Republican governor to appoint Ditka, with slightly less optimism about the results.

I actually see nothing wrong with Oprah as a senator. In fact, I would like to see more of a variety of people, famous or not, in our governing bodies. I'm tired of Washington being seen as an Ivy League organization.

I'm tired of Washington being seen as an Ivy League organization. Well, we've gotten rid of George Bush (Yale), Dick Cheney (graduated Wyoming, but started at Yale), and Don Rumsfeld (Princeton). That's a good start. : ) As for Washington in general: I don't have the numbers, but I'm willing to bet that there are far more graduates of state schools in the Congress than Ivy Leaguers - particularly in the House. If people see Washington as an "Ivy League Organization", they're mistaken.

44th - Obama; 43rd - George W.; 42nd - William Jefferson; 41st - George H. W. All Ivy connections. From 1989 to at least 2013. That's at least 24 continuous years of Presidents of Ivy connections. Add to that Cheney and Gore at the VP spot. This is, of course, not all of Washington but the executive branch wreaks of Ivy League.

Oprah is an incredibly successful business woman, i assume since she was a huge obama supporter i would disagree with her opinions and votes on issues but she would have been a great pick to be a senator.

Being a Senator would be a ginormous demotion for Oprah in every single way. In terms of power, influence, everything. Not to mention financially, obviously. But financially is the least of it.
Don't really think she'd have been interested.
(as I have mentioned before, I really don't get Oprah at all and probably never will, but there is no denying her success, of course)

William Jefferson Bubba shouldn't be tainted by his graduation from an Ivy League law school. Remember where he attended college.

I'm tired of Washington being seen as an Ivy League organization. I actually agree, and aside from the overly-Ivy image of government, I'm a bit sick of the "career politician." That's not to knock someone like Biden or McCain. In the world we have now, politics is a career. But I think a lot of good could be done by introducing a more unique cross-section of this country into the legislature.

Although Blago is not the kind of person I'd want as my governor it seems to me the evidence against him is pretty weak. I predict he will be acquitted if he is indicted. Fitz moved too soon.

"Paul Blart: Mall Cop" has been the #1 movie in the country 2 weeks in a row - the United States is officially as dumb as it can get. Let's at least have some smart people in charge, career politicians or not.

So we now have Hoyas in charge of Illinois, Indiana (Gov. Mitch Daniels), Puerto Rico (Gov. Fortuno) and the Dept. of Defense (and 5 senators and double digit House members)? Did I miss anyone?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Georgetown_University_alumniReview and feel pride. Then, if you're like me, you'll pause, take a few moments, and feel like a failure because you're nowhere near being on this list, and almost certainly never will be. ;D ;D On an unrelated note, not that it's connected to Georgetown at all, but it looks like Michael Steele with be the new head of the RNC by the end of the day today. Pretty good choice, I think, though I know that he wasn't the #1 choice of conservatives.

Hey, wha'd'ya know about that. I completely missed him on that list.
In my defense, it is a long list and I have the attention span of a 5-year old on a Friday afternoon. (the rest of the week, I am up to junior high school levels).
