I emailed Barker, and while I don't want to post his exact response, he confirmed that Riley has in fact decided to back out of his commitment.
I know there is a recruiting board and SF has a thread referencing this below, but I think it is important enough to justify it's own thread.

Thanks for the clarification.

I wish the best of luck to DaShonte.
Without knowing the reasons, it's hard to even hazard a guess as to whether this is the right move. That said, I can't imagine many coaching situations better for him.

Not fun news but ultimately if either side was wavering then this is probably for the best. Does not make sense for either side to commit to something they are not comfortable with.

Supposedly it was mutual and Riley just didn't get a good vibe when he was on campus for MM, seems like he and the staff had different visions for what his role would be. It happens sometimes, and that's the story.
Not that I know anything really, but I'll throw out some baseless speculation anyway.... Riley also played his AAU ball for "The Family" program which is closely tied to "Worldwide Wes" who is one of those really shady handler types. Wesley is a guy who tends to funnel players to certain college programs and eventually to a particular agent in Leon Rose. He also tends to be involved in shoe contracts and endorsements. He holds a lot of sway over a lot of players and so he gets a cut for directing players to certain companies and whatnot.... Typically Wes funnels guys to schools like Memphis, not schools like Georgetown. Like I said I have absolutely no idea how close Riley is to Wes or if there's any connection at all, but "The Family" AAU program has a pretty bad rep and I was a little surprised to see a kid from there at Georgetown. It'll be interesting to see where Riley ends up, and maybe once we see that we'll get a better idea of what brought on this whole thing. It's possible he's telling the truth and he just didn't see eye to eye with JTIII on something like position or playing time, but maybe there's more to it.

There's always "More to it". Just as you can be sure that Joe the Senator hanging on to his committee chair? There's definitely "more to it". Not suggesting I know what it is, but you can be sure it's there. While this is disappointing news, better now than a very unhappy camper later.

Sign that Monroe is a 2-3 year player? I like that alternative. Putting a positive spin on something negative at least makes us feel better. In all seriousness though, I think you may very well have a point.

Sign that Monroe is a 2-3 year player? Or maybe that Riley was convinced that Monroe might not be a one and done player. who knows what greg is going to do? better to find out now that it's not going to work with riley than for him to transfer later. what other bigs are available at this point?

First Bras, now this, we're thin. Although we could definitely benefit by having another big body in '09...assuming Monroe sticks around, we'll be fine.

i haven't seen it anywhere and i find it supsicious that davis is the person who just had this in his column on tuesday ( the day after the game )
Note - Georgetown confirmed that the program received signatures from 2009 commitments DaShonte Riley (6-11, 230 pounds) and Hollis Thompson (6-6, 180) during last week's early signing period. Both are consensus top-100 players. The last player on the Hoyas' recruiting board for next season is Arizona decommit Solomon Hill, a 6-6 forward from Los Angeles expected to choose between the Hoyas, Southern Cal, Kansas State and Kentucky.

Bad news. Hope that things work out for Riley and that the Hoyas can readjust.

Now that Riley isn't going to be the player we all envisioned having on the Hoyas... its critical that Sims continues his development and starts contributing to the team.
Note to Henry - I am sure you've got a great 3 point shot - (especially for a guy your size) and we are happy to have you launch it 10 to 20 times a season. While we love the enthusiasm and all beleive that you are going to be a balla... your going to be sitting a lot more than you'd like if every time you enter a game the first time you touch the ball you launch a three. Be patient, play defense, rebound, work hard, learn the offense... your time will follow.
