If anyone would like, i am willing to discuss the joke that is/was the all-star voting/results im also willing to discuss 1) Alex Semin fighting like a girl or 2) Sidney Crosby continuing to fight dirty. Way to go Sabres! (sorry Boz, but I got to root for my caps to at least have a chance at first in the east!) 1 - Semin's "fight" was probably the funniest thing in the history of the world. What a b---h. I've never been more embarrassed to be a hockey fan. Funniest part about all of this was that (correct me if I'm wrong) Semin got ejected because he broke the Rob Ray/jersey-not-tied-down-correctly rule... not because he fights like a girl. 2 - Crosby has fought before... and every time he jumps a guy who doesn't see it coming at all (over the weekend, earlier this season vs. Atlanta I believe, when he fought in Boston last season). I won't call him a cheap-shot artist by any means, but he's a punk as far as I'm concerned. If you want to fight someone, man-up, look him in the eyes, and drop the gloves. **Obligatory Biased Fan Reaction** The think that has Editeded me off about the coverage of these two fights is that few have mention that even though Semin fought like a girl, he fought a guy two inches taller than him, they both looked at each other like men before they fought, Semin showed some surprising moves when he escaped from his jersey (of course helped by not tying down), and got a knock down. I have also been thinking about MMA alot with these two fights (actually semin's and Crosby's against Atlanta). MMA fighters who obviously dont fight like girls, often employ the "bongo" technique (at least in the few fights that i have seen). And then on the other side of the coin, the worst part of the first crosby fight is not the shot to the groin, but rather that he punched the guy in the BACK OF THE HEAD while he was HELD BY ANOTHER PLAYER. Thats not just dirty in Hockey, thats dirty in MMA, and even dirty in a street fight. Biased reaction over. Final thought, as much as we can be embarrassed about Semin's fighting style, chances are we would probably fight the same way or in another outrageous way (not to mention the probability that Staal would absolutely beat the crap out of us)

To help me get over the really bad stuff going on on the other board (no to mention the basketball court), just thought I'd mention that the NHL just put on a hell of an entertaining All-Star game and weekend.
Tim Thomas should have won MVP, but they're in Montreal, so I guess I'm OK with that wussie Kovalev getting it.
Pretty funny hearing the Montreal fans chanting and razzing at Thomas one moment and then cheering him the next when he's making one great save after another.
Certainly a more entertaining game than the one I watched at 2 pm.

No its not going to ever be a game that looks like a real game, but it is fun to see what these guys can do in almost perfect circumstances. There were a lot of great goals in the game to make up for no hitting. The two things i didnt like are the Vs. Broadcast (saw some of the CBC show online they just do it better because there are no promos for "Sports Soup") and the bad music they played during intros last night. The live band stuff is great if you are there but i dont know how well they work on TV. All in All i thought it was successful and a fun game to watch, especially because it went to overtime and then the shoot out (i was shocked that Ovie scored on it, he has yet too in games that matter! : I will be glad though to get back to real games. Boz, big game on Tuesday heh? Should be fun!

The Pens have fired Therrien. From the Stanley Cup Finals and Coach of the Year finalist to fired within less than a year. It's amazing how short people's memories are in pro sports. Their AHL affiliate coach has taken over as interim head coach. sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3909857

I hate the Pens, but i think we can all agree it wasnt therrin's fault how this team was playing. The players just have not look interested in winning at all this year (well at least after the first quarter of the season). you can try to blame it on the few players that have left in the off season, but if you look at a team like Florida who is playing with a rag tag team featuring a few big time players, it is shocking that the pens with all that talent arent 5 or 6 in the conference. FLA is winning because they play like every game is their last, they are fun to watch and to root for- the pens on the other hand just look lost and apathetic. It would pretty ugly is this were true, but Barry Melrose was saying that he thought the pens players may actually be playing down so that Therrin would get fired. I guess we will all know once this AHL guy takes over. for the record though, i am hoping for them to make the playoffs, and lose in the first round in a slaughter by boston that way they dont get any good draft picks.

And Ovie celebrates by getting in a tussle with Crosby in today's thrashing of the Pens.
This Pittsburgh-Washington rivalry is quickly becoming one of the best in the NHL.

Boz (or anyone), what is your opinion on the idea that Ovie is too much of a showboat? I think he brings an added excitement and personality to the game that had been severely lacking between say Gretz's retirement and the Lock out. I view sports in general as purely entertainment and anything that adds entertainment value is something I'm all for.

Anyone who says that about Ovechkin is simply an idiot. That's my opinion.
It would be one thing if Ovechkin was trying to sell himself in some way, or displayed more interest in himself than in the success of the team.
But anyone who's ever listened to him talk at all knows it's just unbridled enthusiasm for the game he plays. Hell, all sports could use some more of that.
On an unrelated note: I can't believe Boston just lost two games to SE teams not named the Washington Capitals. Let that serve as a reminder please that....YOU HAVEN'T WON ANYTHING YET!!!
Oh well. A pretty awful road trip, but they have their next six at home.

When are the Rangers going to fire Tom Renney Glen Sather and put me out of my misery?
On Edit: After posting, I went over to ESPN and saw that Tom Renney was fired. Sather has to be next. He has assembled a terrible team with little future in the salary cap era (6 years for Wade Redden?!?) and teams have won in spite of him. He has made a litany of terrible moves dating back to the pre-lockout era (Eric Lindros, Pavel Bure, Theo Fleury, Hugh Jessiman).

At least they've got healthy netminders going forward... Miller out with a high ankle sprain puts the breaks on a Sabre team that was poised to leap into the top four or five in the East. Why am I not surprised this happened? As for Ovechkin being a showboat... who cares? The guy is obviously having fun, he loves what he does and it shows. It isn't like he's taunting anyone, or performing any ridiculously over-the-top endzone celebrations (which I like, mind you). Not sure where the "showboat" label comes from, as everyone I read and listen to (including CBC and TSN) seems to love the enthusiasm. Miller going down right now is worst case for Buffalo. Im all for Buffalo doing well, anything that helps keep the pens out of the playoffs is great. Buffalo has a lot of talent though, they can find a way! The stuff about showboating has come from Pierre Mcguire and Bob Groves. Pierre is on NBC now but used to be a Pitt guy and Bob Groves who is the Pens pre/post game show guy. They are obviously biased, but just wanted to know what you guys thought. I only have read Caps opinions and Pens opinions about it which are biased. On an unrelated note: I can't believe Boston just lost two games to SE teams not named the Washington Capitals. Let that serve as a reminder please that....YOU HAVEN'T WON ANYTHING YET!!! Oh well. A pretty awful road trip, but they have their next six at home. Yeah, wasnt that great of a weekend. The loss to FLA isnt THAT bad (but all losses are bad), they have been on a tear lately and are playing way above their skill level. But the TBL loss is weak- bruins got to step it up! Also according to the Post (and espn), Tortorella may be taking over for the rangers if he can work it out with the lightning. Good luck on that. I think Tortorella is a huge jerk, maybe that is what the Rags need (he can get along well with Avery!)

I don't think Ovechkin shows off to promote himself, he's just being himself. He clearly loves playing hockey, loves winning, and loves scoring goals.
Like Boz said, it would be different if he were a me-first style player, but that's not the case. He's a good teammate, and the rest of the guys on the team clearly love him. It's not rare for him to celebrate more for a teammate's goal than he celebrates for his own. What he's done for the Capitals and hockey in DC is just phenomenal.

A great game between the Caps and Bruins ends on a howler by Tim Thomas - getting beat by a shot from around the red line. The replay shows that the puck got some air under it and lifted off, so it was sort of tricky, but an NHL goalie on the league's best team should have that one.
Speaking of the battle for league's best team, a shocker in Nashville last night - 8-0 over the Red Wings!

The Wings game was much more shocking than the goal (but i like the goal a lot better ;D) This week is going to be awesome, i love the trade deadline. Cant wait to see where Pronger goes or Guerin or which huge deal is going to come out of no where and shock everybody. I think there are still going to be a good amount of deals this year and with some big time guys too.

Still not sure it actually happened. And Thomas isn't just an NHL goalie on the league's best team, he's one of the NHL's best goalies (at least this year) on the league's best team. You could tell how ashamed he was....I don't think I've ever seen a goalie sprint off the ice so fast. B ut you're right. I was only flipping over for the first part of it because of the Hoyas, but a great game nevertheless. The Caps sure seem to have the Bruins number this year, so I'm probably insane for syaing this, but those two teams in the conference finals would be quite a treat. (And TV people would love it, of course). Lot of work to get there, so I won't say any more about that for now.

Even though the Caps have gone 3-0-1 against boston all those games were so close (as you know Boz). But right know NJ is scarring the crap out of me. I though that the rest of the team might back off once Brodeur came back, but they just keep playing so well.
